Page 1: PolyOne Performance Additives expands colour additives for elastomers

Impact modifiers offer low temperature performance PolyChem Alloy Inc has launched two ultra-low-temperature impact modifiers for engineer-ing resins such as PBT, polycarbonate andnylon. Pelletized Abust™ and Mebust™ impactmodifiers are claimed to offer improved lowtemperature (-55°C) impact properties.

The impact modifiers are said to have a butadi-ene content in excess of 65%. They have nomelting point and can easily be mixed with hightemperature (up to 250°C) engineering resins.According to data reported by the company, injection moulding compounds prepared withoptimum levels of its impact modifiers havesimilar physical properties to compounds prepared using existing acrylic and MBS impactmodifiers (Table 1).

The company adds that the Abust and Mebustadditives have less than 0.05% moisture and arefree-flowing. This improves handling character-istics and minimizes flammability concernsassociated with the handling of impact modifiedpowders. Applications for the materials areautomotive, furniture and appliance, wire andcable, and construction, where high impactstrength at sub-zero temperatures is essential.

PolyOne PerformanceAdditives expands colour additives for elastomersThe Performance Additives group of PolyOneCorp has introduced the Stan-Tone® EP product

line, an expansion of the Stan-Tone family ofcolour additives for the elastomer and rubbermarkets. Based on an EPDM binder, Stan-ToneEP colour additives are more compatible withvarious elastomer systems than standardbinders, PolyOne claims. As a result, the newcolour masterbatch dispersions are ideal forelastomeric compounders and mixers in a num-ber of cost-driven, end-use applications, includ-ing hose and tube, wire and cable, and flooring, the company says. Both general-purpose andhigh-performance additives are available.

According to PolyOne, Stan-Tone EP colouradditives offer customers a number of benefits, including excellent dispersion quality, improvedcolour and rheological consistency, andimproved shelf life. The Stan-Tone EP productline is one of 15 colour additive product linesoffered by the Performance Additives group.PolyOne can formulate a colour pallet to meetspecific customer requirements for any of theStan-Tone product lines. The pallet approachcan reduce cost, inventory, lead times and varia-tion, while adding colour flexibility, the compa-ny says.

In addition, the Performance Additives grouplaunched a new online colour-selection tool, the Stan-Tone Color Selector. This displays allcolours from the entire Stan-Tone product fam-ily as well as technical information for eachcolour, including pigment type, physical prop-erties, colour index and light fastness.
