CRIME BUSTERS
Students analyze several pieces of evidence using basic forensic science techniques and implicate one or two
criminals based on it.• Main changes from the last time this event ran:
• New list of powders that is larger than the amount of powders you’ll see on the test• Layout of chromatogram• NEW PART: unspecified evidence
• New focus on critical thinking and situations that a forensic scientist may actually face

PART BChromatogram
Saturday, February 28, 2015
WHAT CHROMATOGRAPHY LOOKS LIKE
• Chromatography: the separation of a mixture by passing it in solution or suspension through a medium in which the components move at different rates.• In other words: using rubbing alcohol to separate the
parts of ink (which move at different speeds) across chromatography paper. This creates a unique design for each type of ink.

PROCESS
How we’ll do this for best results:
1. Put the wood stirring stick through the hole punched in the filter paper
2. Using the stirring stick, place the bottom edge of the filter paper into the rubbing alcohol, making sure that it does not get caught on the edges of the cup and is centered in the cup
3. Wait. Do not touch again until told to do so

WHY SUSPECT 2?
• Suspect 2 was implicated by the most pieces of evidence• Any other implications may have been unrelated
• Suspect 2 may have given Suspect 1 shoes to frame her• Suspect 4 may have been at Smith’s house at a different time or may
drive the same car as someone who drove by the house• Suspect 5 may use the same pen as Suspect 2• Suspects may have purposely altered their handwriting• There is no explanation for Suspect 2’s fingerprints and hair being at
Smith’s house
Saturday, February 28, 2015
WHY SUSPECT 2?
• Just because one piece of evidence points to a suspect does not mean that the suspect is guilty• In real life, different pieces of evidence can have different meanings• You must use critical thinking and look at all of the evidence in any situation
