Dear Fellow HSL Employee
Labor Day weekend is here, the so-called official end of summer and start of a new school
year. For HSL, September is the final month of the fiscal year and we’ll welcome FY16
come October 1. Please keep your eye out for my next Friday Report when I expect to
provide a number of updates, including the status of our recent Employee Engagement
survey. Enjoy the long weekend and savor the waning days of summer.
Also, please know that your Friday Report comments are always welcome—just send me
a note at Lou'[email protected]
HSL Highlights
NewBridge is lucky to be located beside the Charles River. And thanks to the “Teaming Up”
of a few dedicated NewBridge residents and employees, the campus now has a safe and
accessible boat launch site
along with boat storage
racks for all to enjoy. My
gratitude goes to residents
Jerome Medalie and Beth
Lowd, and employees Jane
Baker from Marketing and
Tom West and his crew,
including Scott Salvato and
Kevin Freeman, from
Engineering. Jane worked
closely with the Town of
Dedham to secure all the
necessary design and
construction permits, and with Tom’s
team who built the ramp and racks.
Flu season is right around the corner and HSL’s
annual “Get V’ed” campaign gets underway
later this month with clinics and vaccination
events across all campuses.
Please stay tuned for all the scheduling and
vaccine details. Till then, please take a few
minutes to review our flu vaccination policy—
particularly if you are new to the organization.
Your collective vaccination rate was excellent
last year, across HSL…so let’s do it again!

Employee Happenings
Congratulations to this year’s 16 Orchard Cove scholarship recipients who will use their scholarships to begin or further their
educations: Mishmarken Brutus, Tyler Tedesco, Michaelli Day, Christine Rocha, Taylor Libby, Mike Carroll, Cory Merill,
Mohamed Skaiky, Stephanie McEachern, Ashley Gibson, Arnoldson Fenlon, Annette Hadden, Wolph Gustave, Christina Fergiste,
Jonathan Isador and Sara Teixera. And many thanks go to the residents of the Orchard Cove Scholarship Committee who successfully
raised $40,000 to make these scholarships possible.
Last month, a delegation of employees from Orchard Cove, HRC-Roslindale and HRC-NewBridge attended the annual Pioneer
Network Conference, the largest national conference dedicated to culture change and person-centered care in long-term care. And my
congratulations go to the employees from the HRC T.E.L.L. Committee who I hear delivered well-received presentations.
Among the most recent graduates of HSL’s Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Program is HSL Hospice Care team
member Lisa Port White. Lisa, a massage therapist, has the privilege of providing our hospice patients with a
gentle, comforting and compassionate touch through massage. During her summer CPE training, Lisa worked with
HRC residents as a Chaplain Intern and provided Reiki treatments for Palliative Care patients in the MACU. Thank
you Lisa for the special care you provide and congratulations for completing the summer CPE program.
Get Involved--Get Engaged
Click here to learn about HSL’s Physician Referral Program, now open to all HSL employees who wish to
participate. The program provides a cash bonus for referring qualified physician candidates who join our
Department of Medicine team. For more information, please contact Brenda Welch, HR’s Physician Recruiter, at
[email protected] or at 1-5663.
Be sure to join the fun at the Visionaries Fund Employee Bazaar on September 17 on the
HSL/HRC Patio in Roslindale, with Daniels Art Gallery as the rain location, (with free ice cream
and popcorn) and/or on September 30 in the Winter Garden next to Nosh at NewBridge (with
free smoothies)! Both Bazaars are scheduled from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and each will have a wide
variety of donated items for purchase with all proceeds supporting the Employee Giving
Campaign. Please click here to learn more about the Campaign and if you’d like to make a gift to
the Visionaries Fund, please go to https://give.hebrewseniorlife.org/employeegiving. Thanks!
Best of the Best
Jim Dormady, CCB Director of Facilities, received a note of appreciation from a CCB resident and here are a few excerpts:
“I just want to thank you and your whole staff for making my birthday a great success. The patio worked out great with the chairs
and lighting, and everyone had a nice time, making my birthday very special. Please thank everyone. We are really blessed to
have such a great team of people helping us make CCB such a great place to live.”
Please share this Report with your colleagues who may have limited computer access or with those who may not be checking their email today.
Sincerely,
Lou Woolf
