Key findings from the review

• Strengthening and balances activities improve health and physical

capacity at any age, and maintain and improve function and

reduce all-cause mortality in middle and older age.

• Specific transition points where particularly important, e.g.:

pregnancy, menopause, onset of/on diagnosis of disease, retirement,

on becoming a carer and following hospitalisation.

• Different activities and exercise needed for particular at-risk

populations.

• For prevention of falls in people with a falls history and/or frailer

older adults, structured exercise programmes of progressive

resistance training with increasing balance challenges over time are

safe and effective

• Incorporate progressive resistance training (PRT) with increasing

balance challenges over time are safe and effective.

Labelling- Mandate calorie labelling on the

out of home sector (including

online food delivery)

- Explore what additional

opportunities leaving the EU

presents for food labelling

Local communities - Develop a trialblazer programme

with LAs to ensure those that want

to take action have the knowledge,

support and leadership to do so.

- Strengthening Government Buying

Standards for Food and Catering

Services

Schools - Review how the least active

children are being engaged in

physical activity in schools to

ensure that our investment helps all

children lead active lives

- A national ambition for every

primary school to adopt an active

mile initiative, such as The Daily

Mile.

- Introduce secondary legislation to

update the standards for school

food and take steps to ensure

compliance

- Consult on use of healthy start

vouchers to provide additional

support for low income families

Retail- We intend to ban price promotions

of HFSS food and drink, such as buy

one get one free and multi-buy offers

or unlimited refills of sugary drinks.

- We intend to ban the promotion of

HFSS food and drink by location (at

checkouts, end of aisles and store

entrance)

Marketing- Consult on introducing a 9pm

watershed for advertising HFSS

products in broadcast media with

similar action in the online space

Sugar reduction - Consider extending the SDIL to milk-based drinks

if they fail to reduce sugar by 2020.

- Consider further use of tax system if sugar

reduction does not achieve the progress we wish to

see.

- Consult on introducing a ban to end the sale of

energy drinks to children

Our national

ambition is to halve

childhood obesity

and significantly

reduce the gap in

obesity between

children from the

most and least

deprived areas by

2030.

Everybody Active Every Day

(EAED) Implementation Review

• Commitment in ‘Sporting Futures’ to annually

review implementation of EAED.

• Focused on addressing inequalities, ‘active

• Included a review of national and local strategies

and plans, in-depth interviews, local survey,

working groups and local area examples.

Page 13: Physical Activity- PHE National Updates - Active Essex€¦ · • Partnership between PHE, ISPAH and SE . • Co-Sponsored by WHO and supported by HEPA Europe. • 15-17h October

• There is mixed awareness of the EAED framework.

• EAED is seen as being based on strong evidence,

setting a clear agenda for action and influential on policy

locally and nationally.

• Constraints on financial and human resources are a

challenge in increasing physical activity EAED is helping

to target the allocation of resources in this context.

• Good examples are emerging of cross sectoral

partnership working that applies a wide-ranging

approach to addressing the physical activity challenge.

• We need to take action, together, to address increasing

trends in in-activity.
