TheUnitedStatesNavalInstituteisseekingtwohighlymotivatedanddetail-orientedindividualsforapaidphotographicdigitizationinternship.

Foundedin1873,theU.S.NavalInstituteisaprivate,non-partisan,member-drivennonprofitwhosemissionistoprovideanopen,independentforumforthosewhodaretoread,think,speak,andwriteinordertoadvancetheprofessional,literaryandscientificunderstandingofseapowerandotherissuescriticaltonationaldefense.USNIsponsorsnumerousseminarsandpublicevents,maintainsrelevantblogs,publishestwomagazines(ProceedingsandNavalHistory),andhasservedastheU.S.Navy’sunofficialuniversitypress,producinganentirelibraryofprofessionalbooksaswellasmaintainingasignificantpresenceinthetradepublishingworld.

TheNavalInstituteislocatedinBeachHall,onthegroundsoftheU.S.NavalAcademyinAnnapolisMaryland.

LearningOpportunitiesandResponsibilities

ThePhotoDigitizationInternswilleachcommit24hoursofworkperweekon-siteattheU.S.NavalInstituteinAnnapolis,Maryland.Theinternswilllearnaboutthecareandmanagementofalargearchivalphotographiccollectionandtheprocessofdigitizingphotographsandingestingtheirassociatedmetadata.TheinternshipwilltakeasitsfocustheNavalInstitute'scollectionofover500,000photographs.UnderthesupervisionoftheChiefDigitalOfficer,theMangeroftheHeritageCollection,andtheDigitalAssetsAdministrator,theinternswillassistinthepreparationofarchivalphotographsfordigitizationandwillcaptureandgeneratedescriptivemetadataforhetrainingreceivedthroughtheseinternshipswillallowthesuccessfulinternstohaveathroughunderstandingofthedigitizationprocessandgaindemonstrableexperienceworkingwithimagemetadata.

Requirements

• Enrollmentin,orrecentcompletionof,M.L.I.S.orsimilardegreewithaconcentrationinarchivalstudiesfromanALA-accreditedprogram,oranequivalentgraduatedegreeinthefieldsofinformationscience,recordsmanagement,orpreservation.

• Excellentattentiontodetail.• Abilitytoworkbothindependentlyandundersupervision.• Demonstratedabilitytosetprioritiesandmeetstrictdeadlines.• Abilitytopassabackgroundcheck.

PreferredQualifications

• Backgroundorinterestinmetadatamanagementanddigitalpreservationstronglypreferred.• Interestinhistoricalphotographicpreservationandcare.• InterestinthehistoryoftheU.S.Navyormaritimehistory.

Compensation

ThePhotoPreservationInternswillreceiveacompensationof$12.00perhour.
