• Twoformsmustbecompleted:aproposal,submittedbeforetheinternshipstarts,andareport,submittedwhentheinternshipiscomplete.
• TheattachedProposalFormmustbecompletedandsubmittedatleasttwomonths
beforetheInternshipstarts.
• TheattachedReportFormmustbecompletedandsubmittedwithinonemonthofcompletingtheInternship.
InternshipOverview
• PhDstudentsmustcompleteaResearchInternshipatleastfourmonthslong,duringwhichtheyworkatadifferentresearchinstitution(somewhereotherthanatSaintMary’s).Theresearchinstitutionmaybegovernmental,non-governmental,industrial(privatesector),oralabatanotheruniversity.
• TheintentoftheInternshipistohavethestudentgainadditionalexperienceinresearch
techniquesorapplicationsandbenefitfromexpertisenotavailablelocally.
• Examplesofpotentialinternshipsinclude:
o Thestudenttravelstotheresearchlabofanotherscientistatadifferentuniversityinordertolearnnewtechniques,interactwithnewcolleagues,andgenerallyexpandtheirknowledgeoftheirownoranotherfield.
o Thestudentundertakesapaidorunpaidinternshipwithacompanyinvolvedwith
researchanddevelopmentinthestudent'sfield.Thestudentcouldlearnnewtechniques,activelyconductresearchsupervisedbythecompany,orbecomeinvolvedwiththetransferofknowledgetothecompany.
o Thestudentvolunteerswithanon-governmentalorganization(NGO)totransfer
theirownresearchresultstotheorganization,toaidincommunicatingscientificcontenttotheaudienceoftheNGOs,orconductnewresearchdirectlyrelatedtotheinterestsoftheNGO.

• TheSupervisorandSupervisoryCommitteeareexpectedtohelpthestudentfindand
fundanappropriateinternship.
• DuringtheInternship,studentsshouldspendatleast50%oftheirtimeworkingattheplaceoftheInternship.
• Shouldanappropriateinternshipbeunavailableforaparticularstudent,thestudent
willhavetocompleteatechnologytransferstudybasedonhis/herresearchandpresentittotheSupervisoryCommitteeaugmentedbyonememberfromtheSobeySchoolofBusinessortheIndustrialLiaisonOffice.
