The Capsule Endoscopy Pilot Project links into Strategic Goal number 5, as we continue
our journey to be innovative in what we do, to the benefit of our patients. The project will be of 6
months duration, and 50 patients will be enrolled.
Why Capsule Endoscopy ?
The most common cause of Iron deficiency anaemia in Ireland is blood loss. PillCam is indicated
for Small Bowel OGIB (Obscure Gastrointestinal Bleeding), IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease),
Coeliac Disease and Small Bowel Tumours.
Project Design
• All suitable patients over the age of 18 will be invited to attend for capsule endoscopy
following normal OGD and colonoscopy. Contraindications include unstable GI bleeding,
known or suspected small bowel strictures, dysphagia, GI fistula and pregnancy.
