management of work
Personal development
He who would govern others, first should be master of himself Philip Massinger
Personal development means in my opinion first of all to discover the
kind ofperson you are, and your own competence. To discover the person you
are , you have to understand your feelings, to know which are your goals and
what you want to do in this life, which is the purpose of our existence. For all
this concerns there are some tools you can use:
SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats)
analysis;
Belbin analysis;
NLP techniques ( Neuro-linguistic programming)
Competence is the amount of values, skills, attitudes, knowledge and
experience.
Personal development- planning
Take time to work, it is the price of success;
Take time to think, it is the source of power;
Take time to read, it is the foundation of wisdom;
Take time to be friendly, it is the road of happiness;
Take time to dream, it is hitching your wagon to a star;

Planning- drawing a plan in which we use our knowledge about
ourselves and to make time for the future ahead. To build a plan sounds easy,
but to stick to the plan it is harder than writing it, and for this we need
motivation.

Time is our most important resource, and the only one that cant be
change. Time it is the same for everyone but how we spend time makes the
difference.
Motivation is the force we need to make some things in our life. Wehave to discover what motivates us, and to use that list to achieve our goals.

A personal development plan can be seen as a script of what we see our
future regarding our personal life and work. These things have to worktogether because when our personal life is good our
work is more productive.

With this table I discovered:
Strengths that I have, such as: agriculture studies, five years university,
achieving the Landscape Horticulture engineering diploma,
management training in progress; Weaknesses: I dont have enough experience in domain, I am a shy
person, and I have lack of confidence in own abilities, lack of English
skills. These are not defects, but they are things that I need to improve.
Opportunities: agriculture is a domain in which I can use my skills, and
abilities, during my first experience in UK I meet people who are
interested to help me to achieve my goals with their understanding,
patience, advice given, and who appreciate my values, and I find that
company policy encourage staff development;
Threats: due to financial factors the company might decide staff
restructuring, and because most of our work it is outside the forces of
nature (rain, wind, snow, drought ) can cause some modification.
Belbin test : Dr. Belbin and his team identified eight team types whose
presence made a crucial difference to team performance. As a result of the
research, Dr. Belbin devised a Self Perception Inventory which people can
use to assess their dominant team role.This are my results: CW-8, CH-12,
SH-11, PL-5, RI-9, ME-7, TW-6, CF-12.
My dominant team type:
1. chair
controls the way in which a team moves towards the team
objectives by making the best use of team resources, recognises
where the teams strengths and weaknesses lie; ensure that the best use is made of each team members
potential;
2. completer- finisher
ensures that the team is protected as far as possible from mistakes of
commission or omission;
actively searches for aspects of work which need a more than usual
degree of attention;
maintains a sense of urgency within the team.

I discovered that I have some skills, such as: calm, self-confident,
controlled, a capacity for treating and welcoming all potential contribution on
merits, a strong sense of objectives and without prejudice, but also I still have
some topics that need to be improve.
NLP The New Technology of Achievement
This is my specific method to discover and improve myself.
NLP- or Neuro- Linguistic Programming is the science of how the brain codes
learning and experience. This coding affects all communication and behaviour.
It is affects how you learn and how you experience the world around you. It is
the key to reaching goals and achieving excellence.
NLP provides tools and skills for development of excellence, and establishes a
system of empowering beliefs and presupposition about thoughts, or
communication, and effective change.
NLP in business:
Implement effective organisational change;
Maximize sales and customer service performance.
NLP in personal life:
Become more motivated and happy;
Eliminate limited believes and live your full potential;

For the moment I am employed within Edward Vinson Farm .
Edward Vinson Farm is a well established, respected and dynamic group
which is closely involved with all aspects of commercial soft fruit production.
These activities include the breeding trials and development of new
varieties, the propagation of plants for themselves and other growers and the
growing, harvesting and packing of fruit for supermarkets and other outlets.
There are two separate companies which from the group, Edward Vinson
LTD. (Fruit Farm and Breeding Programme), and Edward Vinson Plants Limited
(Fruit Plant Propagation)
They also have involvement with and strong links to Berry World (Fruit
Marketing). The Asplins Producer Organisation Limited and BerryWorld Plus
(raspberry breeding).

To produce fruit to a high standard, maintaining quality and taste;
To produce fruit to a super market standards to prevent crop
rejection; To produce fruit at a reasonable cost to enable the company to
continue to expand to its maximum, whilst maintaining standards.
To understand the future of soft fruit farming, to continue to farm

To increase the use of younger plants and day neutral varieties;
To develop plants with a degree of disease resistance;
To improve the flavour for a pleasant eating experience;
To develop attractive berries with good fruit shape and good shelf
life for supermarkets.
List of main duties and responsibilities:
Perform all field operations in the most timely manner possible;
Maintain all equipment in top working order;
Keep crop production within the established budgets;
Do my part to provide an atmosphere of team work, camaraderie, and
an enjoyable work environment for everyone at the work placement;
Follow all operating procedures and policies established by

Remember that in crop production, there are many factors beyond our

Using my studies in the domain, I would like to start a second job in

All this objectives are linked to the organisational objectives at my workplacement because they are regard to personal development, and like I have
said above, if I know where I am, and what I want, every part of my life is
accomplished.
The tragedy in life doesnt lie in not reaching your goals. The tragedy
lies in having no goals to reach. It isnt a calamity to die with dream unfilled,
but its a calamity not to dream. It is not a disgrace to reach the stars, but is a
disgrace to have no stars to reach...

Personal challenges faced and gaps in your current skills and knowledge
One of my challenges, is that I am studying in a foreign language, and a
foreign country, then that I am working in a domain where many of my skills
have to be in to continuous development.
Every working day at my work placement is a challenge, because most of my
time I do new jobs, that I have been learning but I didnt practice enough.
I know many things regarding to agriculture, but until last year I didnt have
the opportunity to work in the domain, so I think in this moment I am filling
one of the gaps I have (lack of experience).
I have learn during University many things about plants, but I didnt studied
in detail about raspberries , strawberries, crops, breeding, so I have a chance
to develop my knowledge about this tasks. And I had the chance to participate
indirectly in breeding techniques.

Even regarding to my landscaping studies I have the chance to see it with my
own eyes how can be a farm projected. Typical zones of work, facilities,
windbreaks, fields position.
At this work placement I have used during the time many of my strengths,such as: adaptability, flexibility, I have manage to complete my duties even if I
am away from home and family, I left my comfort zone for the change to
create my own future.
During my first time to Plumpton I have the pleasure to see that I will study
many of mine interest objects such as: Team roles, Portofolio Building skills,
Personal Development Planning, and I am looking forward to studying many
others things.
Living, studying, and working in UK made me gain to trust myself, manage
challenging situation, working in different places and different jobs at my
working placement.
Mast Session identified, option for support and coaching from course
tutors, managers or other colleges
Writing this assignment I had found support from Plumpton tutor ( lots of
material to read, every tutor is willing to help with extra information every
time I have ask that) , from my manager (additional information about farm)
and books (that I have write about in reference part). It was an occasion to
discuss with my colleges that attempt to the first and second generation of
MAST course about their vision or perception about this assignment.

From this citation I have understand that if I have a plan, I will have clearidea about priorities, realistic time targets, and at the end of the day I will have

IMPROVEMENT OF TEAM AND COMPANY setting goals, planning
properly it will improve during time, team performance, and

SATISFACTION: it is the same principle, when you finish something

To carry out my job to a good standard, I need to be healthy, and

Research and evaluate methods and processes to determine
work priorities
Deciding work priorities:
Doing what you enjoy.
It is important for my own quality of life that I enjoy my job. If you
know what you like or dislike, you will be more able to move your job towards
doing things that you enjoy.
This is important as you more likely to do your job effectively if you love
it than if you loathe it. Almost every job has tedious or unpleasant elements toit, it is important that there parts are done properly.
Concentrating on your strengths
It is important to know what your talents and weaknesses are. A good
way of doing this is to carry out a SWOT analysis (see page no 5). This provide a
formal approach to evaluating your strengths, and weaknesses, and the
opportunities and threats that you face. It makes a lot of sense to find a job
that suits your strengths, and where your weaknesses do not matter.
My job it is strictly related to my strengths, because I work in agriculture.
Almost every day it is different, but I can adapt very fast to my job needs. At
this work placement it wasnt necessary to have experience, and one off my
weaknesses do not matter.
Understand how to be excellent at your job.
One excellent way of ensuring that you concentrate on the right things
is to agree them with your employer!

What is the purpose of your job?
The purpose of my job is maintenance of experimental fields within
Edward Vinson Farm.

they are moved out, where I have to take care about them, with some special
procedure, depends what is the purpose of the new plant. For example they
are interested to obtain a new strawberry variety with bigger fruits, so I am
responsible to cut shoots ( a strawberry plant at maturity sends out shoots in a
attempt to propagate a new plant, but when this process starts the plant wont
produce flowers and after that fruits).

As you can see in these picture cutting runners involves a special
procedure, the runner must be cut with a special dimension, not sorter than
the edges of the pot, and has to be made careful, because the leaf can be
easily confused with a runner.
What are the measures of success?
1. Commitment to work and company ( trust)
2. Attitude at work ( towards authority and other members of the stuff)
3. Performance to work.
What is exceptional performance?
To reach required standard of work. Individuals are different. Progress
is the key to good performance.

What are the priorities and deadlines?
Every job has it is deadline, and priority due to weather conditions and
plant development. When raspberries grow, they get different heights, they
have a special growing support, so depending how high they are we have toattach the plant to the growing support.

We use clippers, cutters, string, and as long we take care about them we
can perform our duties.
Be aware how we handle the plants. Reduce any damages.
We work usually two persons, and every day I am part of the team so
the job to be done in normal parameters, we make the same things, we are not
in competition, and we dont sabotage each other..
Every morning we meet with our manager to discuss the daily tasks, and
obvious during the day I have to respect operating procedures and policies
established by my manager.
Because my work placement it is outdoors, many times I have to work in
the windy or wet condition, thats why I have to use the proper outfit and to
be prepared to work in different climate conditions.

I have to evaluate correctly how mach string I need for one row, not to
waste more than I need.
We use sharp objects so any kind of unexpected movements can easily
injure, so we have to be careful most of the time. Drinking water is animportant issue for my body and brain health.
We have at our disposal facilities such as toilets, car that take us in the
morning and drop us in the afternoon, caravans, and how we used we have
them in the future.
Enjoy what I do This is a very important issue from which I guide all my
life. I do things right and I enjoy doing it.
What resources are available?
passion for agriculture, love that I share with the plants and people, my
work place, good managers, perseverance, seriousness and
commitment, and the fact that I am readyto do my job.
Conclusion of report
I can understand that there are many opportunities for my developmentbecause I am at this course, but first of all I have to prove that I know how to
use the TRUST that company gives to me, that I am ready to work with people,
with responsibility, and that I have to deal with different people and different
situation that can be sometimes difficult. After I do all this I gain the right to be
in Edward Vinson Team.
Thats why I am willing to learn more about my work, and my
performance at the work placement.

Ana worked for Edward Vinson in the 2009 season, in this time Ana
showed that she is responsible person who can be left unsupervised to carry
out a number of tasks, which were carried out to an excellent standard. Anas
daily tasks included the breeding of raspberry and strawberry plants for future
production. Ana showed an ability to plan her daily objectives to a high
standard without any difficulty, making Ana an important part of my team who
is respected and trusted.
