This Draft Indian Standard (Part 1)(First Revision) which is identical with ISO 9177-1: 2011
'Mechanical pencils -Part 1 : Classification, dimensions, performance requirements and testing ’ issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) will be adopted by the Bureau
of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Educational Instruments and Equipment
Sectional Committee and approval of the Production and General Engineering Division Council.
This standard was originally published in 1996. This revision has been taken to align it with the
latest version of ISO 9177-1:2011.
This standard is being published in following three parts:
IS/ISO 9177-1:2011 Mechanical pencils- Part 1 : Classification, dimensions, performance
requirements and testing
IS/ISO 9177-2:1089 Mechanical pencils- Part 2 : Black leads- Classification and
requirements and testing
IS/ISO 9177-3:1994 Mechanical pencils- Part3 : Black leads-Bending strength of HB leads
The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as Indian Standard
without deviation. Certain terminology and conventions are, however, not identical to those
used in the Indian Standards; attention is particularly drawn to the following:
a) Wherever the words `International Standard' appears, referring to this standard,
they should be read as `Indian Standard'.
b) Comma (,) has been used as decimal marker while in Indian Standards it is current
practice to use a full point (.) as the decimal marker.
In this adopted standard, reference appears to certain International Standards for which
Indian Standard also exist. The corresponding Indian Standard, which are to be substituted in
their place, are listed below along with their degree of equivalence for the editions indicated:

the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be
rounded off in accordance with IS 2:1960 `Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised)'.
The number of significant places retained in the rounded off values should be the same as that of
the specified value in this standard.
The product may also be marked with the Standard Mark.
The use of the Standard Mark is governed by the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards
act, 1986 and the Rules and Regulations made there under. The details of conditions under which
