the entire board several other visitorsand reporters Chief Sanders invitedthem tp make an investigation of theinterior of the jail In a magazine ofextensive circulation for the currentmonth a great long account of someones pipe dram personal experiences-was printed the representation beingmade that the Pensacola city jail wasone of the most unsanitary of placesThe article went on to say that rep ¬

resenting himself as a minister anddesiring to preach to the prisoners arepresentative of the magazine desir-ing

to get information of just suchreported conditions was admitted tothe jail and he had fount it actuallyfilthy Those who made the inspec ¬

tion by request last night rc dilypronounced the article a false repre-sentation from start to finish andadded their commendation to thestand taken by Mayor Reilly to en ¬

force a refutation of the articleAfter enjoying the chowder and pay-

ing their respects to the chef for hisability in preparing such an attractive-dish the gentlemen took their de-parture

After investigating a large number-of cases and returning Indictments-In many the grand jury of the UnitedStates court yesterday made its finalpresentment to the court and in thisthe jury takes occasion to state thatthe county jail where federal pris-oners

are confined is in a filthy andunsanitary condition The Jury alsotakes occasion to call attention tothe accommodations afforded juries-in the federal prison and aks forsome relief The report in full is asfollowsHonorable Wm B Sheppard judgeof the United States court North-ern

term of this court whichbegan its sessions November 29th1909 respectfully submit the follow¬

ing presentment1 We have examined into a large

number of alleged violations of thecriminal laws of the United Statesand carefully considered nil mattersbrought to our attention

confined therein and toes to report as follows

We find that filthy and unsanitaryconditions exist at the jail the cellsare not properly cared for and weconsider it an unfit place in which-to hold federal prisoners and recom-mend

that steps be taken looking toremoval of prisoners to some otherplace of confinement

tion of the court to the fact thatthe accommodations for grand juriesin the federal building are insufficientand recommend more ample accom-modations

mend that the attention of the properauthorities be called to the fact thatample accommodations in the pres¬

ent federal building could the securedby making slight alterations and atno great expense The present ac ¬

commodations are insufficient for thecourt officials and the grand jury

We further recommend that thetwo senators from Florida and thecongressman from the Third con-gressional
