SITUATION
• It is often the case that desks become cluttered with many pens.
• This makes the desk untidy and difficult to work on especially if you are a ‘Product Designer’ and you use felt pens of all different shapes and sizes.
• It would be better if pens could be found easily and do not lay under the design work.

BRIEF
• I will design and make a ‘Pen Holder’. The product will be eye catching and appeal to all ages.
• The product will be made mainly from metal.• The product will be able to hold multiple pens
of different shapes and sizes.

Activity 1 Design Outcome (T3A1D(1)5,6(2)1)
This is the First activity for this you need to produce:
– a range of ideas for the ‘Pen Holder’ ALSO– You must consider what components will be required– You can produce your ideas on more than one sheet
SHOW ON THE LAST INITIAL IDEAS SHEET YOUR ‘FINAL IDEA’IMPORTANT
The ‘Pen Holder’ must be made of no less than two parts (one must be made in metal) and include some form of
jointing used in metal work.

• This is the Second activity for this product.• In this activity you must:
– Illustrate your sketches to show design details, including how the ‘pen holder’ will be assembled (put together)
– Think about the information that has to be communicated and the best way to show it (annotate your drawings)
IMPORTANTThis task will require you to communicate information on the materials that you are using such as sizes, properties, cost, manufacturing colours and anything else you think is relevant.

• This is the Third activity. In this activity you will:– Create a model to support your design thinking and decisions– Think about what materials are best suited to manufacture
the model so that it will closely resemble your design– Write an Evaluation of the model to say how well the model
works (see sheet after Model Making)
In this activity make your model full size, remember you are trying to evaluate your design by modelling a physical representation of it.

TO MAKE A MODEL YOU CAN USE ALL SORTS OF MATERIALS. THE MATERIALS CHOSEN SHOULD BE SIMILAR TO THE PROPERTIES OF THE MATERIAL YOU WILL MAKE THE PROTOTYPE FROM. THE DIMENSIONS OF THE MODEL SHOULD NOT BE ‘MADE TO SCALE’ UNLESS THE FINAL PROTOTYPE IS VERY LARGE. IN THESE EXAMPLES THE CHAIR IS MADE TO SCALE BUT THE SHAVER IS FULL SIZE.
