RON MACARTHUR PHOTOFeatured speaker Delaware Secretary of Education Lillian Lowrey congratulates the Class of 2011 on its accomplishments.
The following is text of the Cape Henlopen High School 2011graduation speaker, Delaware Secretary of Education LillianLowrey.
Good evening and congratulations, class of 2011.Thank you for the opportunity to share this veryspecial moment in time with you. This is a joyoustime, the celebration of individual accomplish-
ment. I want you to take a moment to think of your favorite
book. Think about how it begins, the introduction, the de-velopment of the plot and its characters, chapter by chapter. Now, think about your future as your life’s story. Yes, youare the author. The story will be written in your voice. Youwill choose the characters and develop the plot.
Today's graduation is one of the beginning chapters. As
you finish this chapter today, some of you may already bethinking about preparation for the next chapter. So, youmay be asking yourselves,
What will I do without my supportive Cape teachers, principals, and staff?
How many of my current classmates will be characters inthe new chapters of my life?
Am I truly prepared to embrace the experiences thatawait me, to choose carefully the new characters that willenter into my personal storyline, to resolve the challengesthat I may face as my life’s story evolves?
These are indeed thoughtful questions to consider as youwrite your autobiography, so I am going to give you a sneakpreview: You are going to be just fine!
You have worked hard. The Cape Henlopen leaders, teachers, and staff have prepared you well. Your family andfriends have been, and will be, loving editors, helping you toerase or correct any errors where and when needed.
Besides, you are the only Cape Henlopen class to have at-tended almost every school in the district. That movementfrom school-to-school taught you how to adjust to changeeffectively and enabled you to come to depend on each oth-er. That movement taught you flexibility.
Some of your classmates told me that as of this year, youare the smallest Cape Henlopen High School graduating

class, but also the class with the biggestvoice. In creative writing, students areoften encouraged to experiment withdifferent literary styles and techniquesin order to help them better developtheir "voice." Class of 2011, as you con-tinue to find your voice, you will con-tinue to write amazing stories. And, I’lltell you why.
You are smart. Your class hasdemonstrated academic achievement. For example, each year, the DelawareDepartment of Education awards meritscholarships to academically-talentedstudents statewide. Among this year’srecipients are members of Cape’s Classof 2011.
The B. Bradford Barnes MemorialScholarship, in honor of the formerSpeaker of the State House of Repre-sentatives, is awarded to one studenteach year enrolling at the University ofDelaware. Joseph Santolo Esposito of
Cape Henlopen High School is the re-cipient of the 2011 B. Bradford BarnesMemorial Scholarship.
The Diamond State Scholarship isawarded to assist outstanding studentsattending regionally accredited col-leges in any state. Among this year’srecipients are Cape Henlopen HighSchool’s Lydia Catherine Miller andZanele Munyikwa. However, based onthe impressive cumulative amount ofscholarship dollars granted among thisclass, these students represent a few ofthe many talented academics amongyou.
You are talented in many ways. Yourtalents have been made obviousthrough the trophies and ratingsearned by your classmates who havedistinguished themselves in the fineand performing arts.
You are competitive. Your athleticabilities have brought your school anddistrict positive recognition throughoutyour time as a Viking.
As a matter of fact, didn’t Cape'sGirls Lacrosse Team recently win their3rd consecutive State Championship?
And, didn’t Cape's Girls Track Teamwin this year’s DIAA State Champi-onship Track Meet? I am sure that the“Cape Crazies” were in the crowd, cheering their classmates on to victory.
You are service-oriented. JROTCstudents are extremely active in serv-ice to the school and the community. This leadership program is instrumen-tal to the success of the school as awhole. The JROTC program receivedthe Governor's highest volunteeraward this past school year for theirwork in the Cape community.
The Leo Club, in collaboration withthe Lions Club, sponsors a fashionshow to support the local animal shel-ter.
You are kind. Members of the KeyClub volunteer at the communityHomeless Shelter. Your support of theSpecial Olympics and the Best Buddiesprogram, where you hang out with andshare your mutual respect and talentswith your fellow students and commu-nity members, is heartwarming.
What a legacy to leave. Yes, Class of2011, you are going to be just fine! Youhave worked hard and given much.
Ken Robinson is an internationallyacclaimed leader in creativity, innova-tion, and human capacity. A prolificauthor, his latest book is entitled, TheElement: How finding your passionchanges everything. In introducing hisbook, Dr. Robinson wrote,
I use the term “the Element” to de-scribe the place where the things welove to do and the things we are goodat come together.
I believe it is essential that each of usfinds his or her Element, not simply be-cause it will make us more fulfilled butbecause, as the world evolves, the veryfuture of our communities and institu-tions will depend on it. We need tomake sure that all people have thechance to do what they should be do-ing, to discover the element in them-selves in their own way.
Class of 2011, as you live to discoveryour element, don’t forget to use thevoice that you have begun to developthrough your natural intellect and tal-ent, your competitiveness, your serv-ice, and your kindness.
You already make this world a betterplace.
I look forward to observing your in-dividual life stories. They will begrand. You are going to be just fine.
What we need is more people who specialize in the impossible.
