C A L E N D A R “Partnering in Christ to Establish Relationships and Nurture a Community of Faith”
August 2016
Paul’s Ponderings A.J. Cronin was a very successful writer in
England in his day. This Doctor turned writer gave
us such classics as "The Citadel" and "The Keys of
the Kingdom," best-sellers in his day. But there is
an important story behind his success.
The first book he wrote didn't go so well. He
became so frustrated with it he trashed it and then
he took a walk out in the English fields behind the
house he was living in. There he met a farmhand
who was digging in the fields. The farmhand,
Angus by name, asked him how he was faring
with his writing. Cronin explained that he was no
longer a writer.
The farmhand was a silent man, and it was long
before he spoke, but what he said put Cronin back
to pen and paper. "No doubt you're the one that's
right, doctor, and I'm the one that's wrong..." He
paused in his sermon. "My father ditched this bog
all his days and never made a pasture. I've dug it
all my days and I've never made a pasture. But
pasture or no pasture," he placed his foot on his
spade, "I canna help but dig. For my father knew
and I know that if you only dig enough a pasture
can be made here."
Do you want to quit? "...if you only dig enough a
pasture can be made..." Remember the story
Jesus told above? The sower sows seed. Some
come up and others do not. It's not up to the sower.
It's up to the soil. No, he just sows the seed. And
so, let me ask you this question: "What would
happen if he quit?" What will happen if you quit?
In Christ,
Paul A. Fryman

Leonard Fairley Elected and
Assigned as the Kentucky
Conference Bishop
We welcome Rev. Leonard Fairley to the Kentucky
Conference as our New Bishop starting on
September 1st when Bishop Davis formally retires.
Rev. Fairley, 59, was elected July 13th at the
Jurisdiction’s Quadrennial meeting at Lake
Junaluska, North Carolina.
“My request for you, my brothers and sisters, is to
pray for me that I might live into the fruit of the
Spirit,” he told the delegates. He added that he
believes The United Methodist Church’s best days
are still ahead.
Fairley was the third bishop, and the second
African American, elected in the Southeastern
Jurisdiction.
Fairley has been the superintendent of the Capital
District since 2015. As the Capital District
superintendent, Fairley served as the chief
missional strategist and spiritual/administrative
leader for 96 churches and 134 pastors in a
geographic area that included the state capital of
Raleigh, North Carolina.
A native of Laurinburg, North Carolina, he was the
third of nine children born into poverty. He told
delegates that his neighborhood was the sort that
police were reluctant to visit, but church
members did, and they invited him to
Vacation Bible School as a youngster.
He said in his official biography he is
“water-washed and Spirit-born,” and God
has led him “to this great work of
ministry, learning daily to see the
possibilities and live the promise.”
Fairley graduated from Pfeiffer University
and from Duke University’s Divinity
School with a Masters of Divinity. He has
served numerous churches as well as being
assigned as the District Superintendent of the
Rockingham District for seven years.
He has published a book of poetry, “Who Shall
Hear My Voice.” He also was a contributing writer
to “The Day the Earth Moved Haiti: From
Havoc to Healing.”
Rev. Fairley has served on numerous boards and
agencies in the North Carolina Conference and has
participated in Mission Work Teams in Costa Rica,
Jamaica, Montserrat, Zimbabwe and Haiti, as well
as the domestic mission of the Appalachia Service
Project.
He was married to his lifelong soulmate, Priscilla
Ann Russell, before she died in 2013. He has two
adult children and three grandchildren.
As a United Methodist bishop, Rev. Fairley is
elected for life. Typically, a bishop will serve a
specific Episcopal area for eight years and, as stated
in the Book of Discipline, will be responsible to
“guard the faith, order, liturgy, doctrine, and
discipline of the Church.”
We welcome Bishop Fairley in his new position!
