Introduction to passive fire protection systems
One of the most important elements of safety in any type of building is correct installation of firestopping systems. Passive fire protection systems can considerably reduce the spread of fire and smoke.
In case of fire, buildings and devices compliant with the norms and conditions of passive fire protection requirements should be designed and executed in a way which guarantees certain conditions in case of emergency.
Buildings and devices compliant with fire protection standards in the event of fire must ensure:
proper load bearing capacity, limitation on spread of flames and smoke within a building, reduced risk of spreading fire to adjoining buildings, possibility to evacuate people as well as safety of rescue teams.
Fire resistance of buildings
Fire resistance approvals criteriaFire resistance – this is an ability of a building element to meet particular requirements in conditions being characteristic for the event of fire. Means of fire resistance measurement is the time expressed in minutes, lasting from fire commence-ment until reaching one of the three following borderline con-ditions such as:
Fire load-bearing capacity R - capacity R - it is a condition when sample element stops serving its load-bearing function, due to mechanical damage, loss of stability, crossing the borderline values of dislocations or deformations.
Fire integrity E - it is a condition when sample element stops serving its function of separation, due to appearance of flames on the non-heated surface, cracks or slits of the size exceeding borderline values, which are then penetrated by flames or gases or when a sample element detaches from the construction.
Fire insulation I - it is a condition when sample element stops serving its function of isolation due to exceeding borderline temperature value on non-heated surface.
Classification is indicated in the form of a designation with let-ters and numbers - i.e. REI120. The numbers indicate the time for which the product is rated to maintain its function - 15, 30, 60, 120 or 240 minutes. Information on ratings are included within the specifications of the building and the technical docu-
mentation of the product. Fire resistance classification, along with application type, barrier thickness, and size of the opening, is one of the most important factors in the selection of the cor-rect firestop solution.

Introduction to passive fire protection systems
For the purpose of gaps and expansion joint sealing it is re-commended to apply firestopping acrylic masses R-FR - ASF and R-FR-ACRYLIC which, together with mineral wool, suc-cessfully seal the linear joints between floor slabs, head walls and floor slabs as well as horizontal slits in drywall, brick and concrete partitions. Construction works need to be executed in the temperature above 5°C, whilst gaps edges need to be carefully cleaned from dust, particles and another impurities before application. Applying acrylic masses on drywalls it is allowed to use on their surface and edges a primer in the form of water solu-tion. Tight grip of firestopping sealing masses to the sub-strate is an important criterion of their proper performance. Acrylic masses can be painted with most acrylic paints.
Pipe penetration joints sealingProper selection of penetration gap protection depends on thetype of material used for pipe production. As noncombustible pipes (metallic and copper ) are good heatconductors, firestopping protection ought to prevent heat from being transmitted to the other side of partition (wall or floor slab). For this purpose it is recommended to insulate pi-pes with mineral wool insulation on both sides of the partition. This type of installation ought to be seale d with acrylic masses R-FR ACRYLIC, R-FR ASF, whilst penetration gaps of large size with firestopping mortar R-EX MORTAR or firestopping board R-FR BOARD .Combustible pipes (made of plastic) get burnt in case of fire, for this reason their penetration gaps ought to be protected with products, which shall fill completely the space created by a burnt pipe. The same rule concerns the protection of non-combustible pipes insulated with combustible insulation (e.g.synthetic rubber)To insulate such type of a gap we also apply a product which shall completely fill the gap space. Product set for such type of sealing is a wrap R-FR PIPE WRAP firestopping mortar R-EX MORTAR or R-FR PIPE WRAP with firestopping R-FR BOARD.
Sealing of cable penetration gap with cable bundles or single cables are recommended to be executed with firestoping mas-ses, R-FR ASF and R-FR ACRYLIC which occur to reach high per-formance with mineral wool. In case of cable routes sealing and larger size penetration gaps it is recommended to apply firestopping partition R-FR BOARD composed of mineral wool board system with high density, wrapped single or double-sided with fire stopping layer. Pro-per board selection depends on required fire resistance of pe-netration gap or partition protected. In order to ensure the sealing quality required we apply also-sealing mass R-FR ACRY-LIC. Product dedicated to cable penetra tion gap sealing is fi-restopping mortar R-EX MORTAR. Mixed with water it is a filler of hydraulic properties - increases its vol ume of 1%, which gu-arantees tight sealing of irregular edges. Mortar can be applied in a set with partition R-FR BOARD as formwork.
Penetration gaps marking Execution of gap sealing ought to be completed with marking by means of an information plate, which is a significant element of acceptance procedure of the construction investment. Information plate ought to contain the following information:
fire resistance classification EI: production date: product name: company name
Cable penetration joints sealing

Introduction to passive fire protection systems
Products of the highest standards and quality Rawlplug company offers professional and comprehensive ran-ge of products for passive fire protection with a complete set of approvalss required in construction industry. Compliance with requirements of European Technical Approvals as well as recommendations of the producer are the elements of paramo-unt importance, which contribute to proper execution of fire protection products.Lack of compliance with the recommendations specified by Eu-ropean Technical Approvals may exert negative influence on sa-fety level of people and properties in buildings protected, even in case of the highest quality of the system applied.Improperly executed fire protection elements of fireproof in-stallation ducts and expansion joints, may, to the significant extent, increase the risk of spreading fire in buildings and incu-ring the huge cost of damages caused by the fire.
