THE SUNDAY READINGS.
Jeremiah has committed his cause to the Lord of Hosts, however, when the Lord first called him to
become a Prophet in the midst of Israel he was most reluctant. Throughout his ministry, Jeremiah would occasionally complain to the Lord regarding what
was being asked of him. But these moments of com-plaint fall within a pattern of courageous fidelity. Jer-emiah disturbed the complacency of his fellow Isra-elites and consequently was persecuted not only by his outright enemies but also by friends and even members of his family. Speaking truth to power,
speaking truth to those closest to us, is not always welcomed. Jeremiah provides us with a wonderful
example of how to be a herald of the Good News by combining humility, gentleness and courage.
In his Letter to the Romans, St.Paul declares that just as sin entered the world through one man, Ad-am, so divine grace was bestowed through one man, Christ. Through Adam we are all afflicted with origi-nal sin but through Christ we are redeemed. The re-demption is an abundant free gift, wrought through the sacrifice and triumph of Christ, that draws us out of the darkness of original and personal sin. The gift of redemption considerably outweighs the fall. The redemption can rightly be described as a re-creation.
In Matthew’s Gospel we are given the reassurance that if we declare ourselves for Christ in the midst of the world then he will declare himself for us in the presence of our Father in heaven. This reassurance is given to enable us to confront and overcome the
inevitable persecution that all disciples can expect. In
FATHERS’ DAY.
Mothering Sunday tends to attract most attention but it is only fair that today we pray for all Fa-
thers. Whilst recognising and celebrating the equality of men and women, we should not be reticent
in celebrating the distinct roles of Fatherhood and Motherhood. This is not a question of deciding
who the domestic duties – Mums and Dads have to share it all (with help from the children). God
our Father calls upon all Fathers to exercise their responsibilities honourably within an embrace of
fidelity that must be forged by the grace of the Sacrament of Marriage. St.Joseph provides his hon-
ourable example as husband and adopted father and guardian. I am sure all Fathers will today right-
ly receive a little pampering.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO FATHER NICHOLAS.
Fr.Nicholas will today (Sunday 21st) celebrate his 41st birthday. Let us keep him in our prayers to-
gether with all our parishioners who have recently celebrated their birthdays.

our own day there are still fellow disciples who are facing violent persecution for the faith. For us,
in our aggressively secular society and culture, the ‘persecution’ will more often be experienced
through the outpouring of ridicule and contempt. We should often remind ourselves that we are
never alone or isolated – even/especially in the midst of this pandemic. The Father’s providential
power is ever at work; the abiding presence of the Son is ever assured; we can be sure that the Ho-
ly Spirit will invigorate the life of the Church every single day throughout the ages.

Pray for the Sick
On Monday 22nd June we celebrate the Memoria of St.John Fisher and St.Thomas More. These
two great Englishmen were Canonised together by Pope Pius XI in 1935. In the year 2000, Pope
Saint John Paul II decreed that St.Thomas More would be proclaimed as Patron of Statesmen.
John Fisher was born at Beverley in Yorkshire, the son of a draper. He was educated at the University
of Cambridge from the age of fourteen. He was a renowned scholar and was elected a Fellow of
Michaelhouse (now Trinity College). He was ordained a priest in 1491 and in 1502 became chaplain
to Lady Margaret Beaufort, the Mother of King Henry VIII. In the same year he was appointed as the
first Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity at Cambridge. In 1504 he was appointed Chancellor of the
University and was consecrated as Bishop of Rochester. He would later become chaplain to Henry’s
Queen, Catherine of Aragon. Fisher would be the only English bishop to refuse allegiance to the dec-
laration that the marriage of Henry and Catherine was illegal and invalid. Following his refusal to ac-
cept the Oath of Succession he was imprisoned in the Tower. In the final days of his earthly life,
Fisher was honoured by the newly elected Pope Paul III who elevated him to the College of Cardi-
nals. Henry VIII vowed that “Fisher’s head would be off before the Cardinal’s hat would be on”. The
scarlet-red robes of the Cardinal are, of course, meant to remind the wearer of their promise to de-
fend the Church even to the spilling of his blood. Although Fisher never personally received the ‘Red
Hat’, he perfectly embraced the witness that is demanded of a Cardinal. On the 22nd June 1535, Car-
dinal Fisher was beheaded upon a scaffold on Tower Hill whilst praying the Te Deum. His head was
displayed on London Bridge for two weeks before being thrown into the River Thames.
Thomas More was born in 1478 in London, the son of Sir John More who served as a Justice of the
King’s Bench. At the age of thirteen Thomas was taken into the household of the Archbishop of Can-
terbury, John Morton. He subsequently became a student at Canterbury College in the University of
Oxford (Canterbury College would be incorporated into Christ Church). Upon graduation, More re-
turned to London to read Law at Lincolns Inn, being called to the Bar in 1501. In 1504 he entered
Parliament. Before marrying Jane Colt in 1505, Thomas had seriously considered the religious life.
Jane died in 1511, leaving Thomas with three daughters. He soon remarried, his second wife being
Alice Middleton who had herself lost her first spouse. The More household was immortalised in the
famous painting by Hans Holbein. Thomas More’s personal and professional integrity was universal-
ly recognised. It was in 1529 that King Henry VIII appointed More as Lord Chancellor of England in
succession to Cardinal Wolsey. More was a man of letters as well as the law. The delivery of his
scholarship was enhanced by the quality of his wit. As with John Fisher, More suffered the conse-
quences of crossing the King’s desires and intentions. Having resigned the Lord Chancellorship,
More was imprisoned in the Tower on 13th April 1534. The following year he was subjected to trial
at Westminster Hall. Following the passing of the death sentence, Sir Thomas More was beheaded on
Tower Hill on the 6th July 1535. As he mounted the scaffold Thomas declared that he died for the
faith of the Holy Catholic Church and was ‘the king’s good servant, but God’s first’.
On Wednesday 24th June we celebrate the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. As the son of Eliza-
beth and Zechariah, he was a cousin of the Lord according the Gospel of Luke. He would grow to
become a Prophet according to the traditions of the ancient covenants. The Lord would subject him-
self to the baptism of John in the waters of the River Jordan so as to provide a sign that would indi-
cate the dawn of the age of fulfilment. Even in the womb of his mother, John became the herald of
the Eternal Covenant as he rejoiced in the presence of the Incarnate Word of God when the Blessed
Virgin Mary visited the household of Elizabeth and Zechariah.

Heart of Jesus, I trust in you.
DAY FOR LIFE – NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER
IN DEFENCE OF HUMAN LIFE.
Today we celebrate the gift of human life. Through the
glory of Creation, we were fashioned in the image and
likeness of Almighty God. Through the glory of Re-
demption, we were re-fashioned by the Incarnate Word.
Human beings, from a natural conception to a natural
death, are not defined according to functionality nor by
any social attribution of value or worth. Every human
being possesses an inherent dignity and value which is
derived, simply but profoundly, from the fact that we
are created according to the providence of God’s de-
sign. Having been granted the gift of life we are en-
dowed with an eternal inheritance.
Last Monday, to mark the re-opening of churches for private prayer across England, The Arch-
bishop of Canterbury and the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster knelt together before the High
Altar in Westminster Cathedral and before the Shrine of St.Edward the Confessor in Westminster
Abbey. May their witness of shared prayer provide us with hope for our own progress back to the
Altar of the Lord.
AN ECUMENICAL WITNESS.
Recently we once again suffered the theft of lead panels from the roof of St.Mary’s. Apart from
the obvious inconvenience, there was inevitable damage to the underlying wooden structure of
the roof and to the internal structures and decoration within the Chapel of the Sacred Heart and
along the North Aisle. Emergency repairs to the roof were undertaken and we will this week see a
full restoration of the structure. It will take some time to assess what repairs are needed internally.
All this holds significant financial implications.
The recent heavy rainfall has revealed a problem with the roof guttering and a detached downpipe
on the north-east wall of the Priory. Its repair will require scaffolding. Scaffolding will also be re-
quired for the repair of a window base that has loosened and is dangerously protruding on the rear
aspect of The Priory facing the Patio. Yet more expenditure.
Apart from any major works of redevelopment, there is the constant need to maintain our exten-
sive set of properties across both parishes. I am so conscious of the financial uncertainties that
many of our households are facing in these difficult times. I nonetheless ask that all parishioners
strive to maintain their contributions to the parishes as long as their own circumstances permit.
Please take note of the information provided in this newsletter that will enable the establishment
of Standing Orders for either St.Mary of the Angels or Holy Family.

A Prayer by St.Alphonsus Liguori.
My Jesus, I believe that You are truly present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things, and
I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at
least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as being already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never
permit me to be separated from you. Amen.
A Prayer by St.Thomas More.
Give me, good Lord, a longing to be with You … give me warmth, delight and quickness in thinking upon
You. And give me Your grace to long for Your holy sacraments, and specially to rejoice in the presence of
Your blessed Body, Sweet Saviour Christ, in the Holy Sacrament of the Altar.
ACTS OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION.
I ask all parishioners to keep contact with those you know to be on their own during this period. If
you know of anyone who is in any kind of need then please contact the Priory directly. Let us help
one another to stay safe and well.
REMEMBRANCE OF OUR PARISHIONERS WHO ARE MOST ISOLATED AND
VULNERABLE.
It is an ancient tradition to have Mass celebrated for our deceased relatives or friends, for someone who is sick, or in gratitude for help received. It is usual in requesting such a Mass to give a small stipend (donation) this goes directly for the support of the priest who cele-brates the requested Mass. If you wish to have a Mass dedicated please write 1) name of in-tention (2) date required on a slip of paper, put your stipend into an envelope and hand it into the Priory. We will try to facilitate the date required but priority will be given to the do-nor who first request a particular Mass. Thank you for your support.
Mass Intentions in coming weeks
Wash me from my guilt and cleanse me of my sin. I acknowledge my offence; my sin is before
me always. Psalm 50:4-5.
Father, I have sinned against you and am not worthy to be called your son. Be merciful to me, a
sinner. Luke 15:18; 18:13.
My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do
good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your
help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Saviour Jesus
Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy.
O my God, because you are so good, I am very sorry that I have sinned against you, and with the
help of your grace I will not sin again.
LET US DAILY OPEN OUR HEARTS IN CONTRITION TO ALMIGHTY GOD AND RE-
MIND OURSELVES HOW ESSENTIAL IT IS TO GRANT MERCY IF WE EVER EXPECT
TO RECEIVE MERCY.
PRAYER OF SORROW / ACT OF CONTRITION.
It appears that the Live-stream provider, MCN media, has been attempting to migrate our live-
streaming onto a new website, https://watchmcnmedia.tv/camera/st-mary-of-the-angels . However,
because they haven’t been able to complete this transition without significant disruption, the video-
link “embedded” into our website home page doesn’t yet link to the new video feed. Therefore, the
old video-feed is intermittent at best. We have, as a result, put a link just above the video window
“Live Feed- MCN has migrated their website: if you cannot access the live-feed below, please
click HERE” which should take you directly to the new MCN website until MCN can provide us
with the special line of code that we need to update our home page.
INTERRUPTION TO THE WEBCAM CONNECTION.
I am most grateful to Jack Meggitt-Phillips who has now completed all the necessary checks and
who has therefore been appointed as our new Parish Safeguarding Representative for St.Mary of
the Angels. I have known Jack for many years. He lives in Cardiff and London and is a children’s
author.
APPOINTMENT OF A NEW PARISH SAFEGUARDING REPRESENTATIVE AT
ST.MARY OF THE ANGELS.
WELCOME NEWS - CHURCHES GIVEN PERMISSION BY THE WELSH GOVERNMENT
TO OPEN FOR PRIVATE PRAYER.
We were all waiting in expectation for the Statement by the Welsh Government last Friday. We can
all rejoice that permission has now been granted for our churches to open for private prayer, even
though this will inevitably be undertaken within the context of a limited timetable for access and
with a strict limit on how many people can gain entry at any one time.
*** ALTHOUGH THE NEW PERMISSION ALLOWS FOR CHURCHES TO OPEN FROM
MONDAY 22nd JUNE, IN REALITY WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO OPEN EITHER ST.MARY
OF THE ANGELS OR HOLY FAMILY UNTIL AT LEAST THE FOLLOWING WEEK.
As you will know from my previous announcements, we have been preparing for the re-opening
for some time. As stated, I have already obtained sufficient stocks of PPE for use in both our par-
ishes, however, our signage will only be delivered on Thursday. Our insurance requires the em-
ployment of what is called ‘The Safety Toolbox’, an excellent resource that structures and enables
our response to all health and safety matters across the Archdiocese, in all parishes and diocesan
properties. There is a formal and extensive risk assessment to be conducted over the coming days.
I will be in contact with our Health and Safety Representatives in both parishes to elicit their help
with this.
As previously stated, we will require a cohort of volunteers to facilitate the opening of our church-
es for access. The most obvious protocols relate to stewarding and cleaning.
*** I AM THEREFORE APPEALING FOR VOLUNTEERS IN BOTH PARISHES TO ASSIST
WITH THE TRANSITION TO OPENING AND SAFELY SUSTAINING ACCESS OVER THE
COMING WEEKS AND MONTHS. WE MUST ENSURE THAT THE TASK OF KEEPING THE
PREMISES SAFE FOR ACCESS IS CARRIED OUR CAREFULLY AND THOROUGHLY.
VOLUNTEERS SHOULD NOT BELONG TO ANY OF THE MOST VULNERABLE CATEGO-
RIES.
I hope that many parishioners will step forward to assist at this most critical time of need. Access
for private prayer is only the first step along the road that will eventually lead to the celebration of
the sacraments once more, especially the celebration of Holy Mass.
I will ensure that we provide as many opportunities as possible for access during the week, though
our priority will be focused on Sunday access. When I am certain of our timelines, following the
conducting of the risk assessments, I will publish a timetable revealing when access will be possi-
ble.
*** I AM OBVIOUSLY AWARE OF HOW EAGER PARISHIONERS WILL BE TO SEE EVEN
A LIMITED RETURN OF ACCESS. I WOULD ASK FOR YOUR PATIENCE OVER THE
COMING DAYS AND WEEKS AS WE STRIVE TO FACILITATE SUCH ACCESS. IF YOU
ARE WILLING AND ABLE TO VOLUNTEER IN ANY WAY WHATSOEVER, PLEASE CON-
TACT ME AS SOON AS POSSIBLE BY TELEPHONE OR E.MAIL.
WITHOUT A COHORT OF VOLUNTEERS WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO OPEN SAFELY,
BUT I HAVE EVERY CONFIDENCE THAT MANY PEOPLE WILL STEP FORWARD. LET US
PRAY CONFIDENTLY TO THE LORD FOR THE STRENGTH OF COURAGE AND GENER-
SITY.
Another volunteer has stepped forward to assist with this work. I am very grateful to the three pa-
rishioners who are now busily applying large amounts of Brasso. There are still many more items
that require attention. Why not arrange to call at the Priory to collect some brassware for cleaning
at home. As I stated last week, the energetic application of some elbow exercise will undoubtedly
burn off a significant number of calories. I still have a trusting heart and pray that said brassware
will not find its way to a sale on Ebay! Please contact me by Telephone or E.Mail if you can help.
N.B. I have just received the return of a first batch of items in all their shining glory!
TIME ON YOUR HANDS? HOW ABOUT CLEANING THE SACRISTY BRASS?
In following the Universal Liturgical
Calendar and its fluctuations resulting
from the varying date of Easter, on Sat-
urday 20th June we celebrated the Im-
maculate Heart of Mary. Otherwise we
would have celebrated the Memoria of
Saint Alban (Protomartyr of England),
Saint Julius and Saint Aaron
(Protomartyrs of Wales). It was on June
20th 2011 that our Archdiocese rejoiced
to celebrate the Installation of the Most
Reverend George Stack as Seventh
Archbishop of Cardiff and Metropolitan
of the Province of Wales and Hereford-
shire. We offer our congratulations to
Archbishop George as he celebrates the
anniversary of his arrival and we extend
to him the assurance of our prayers. We
are particularly aware of the fact that at
this time he has been asked by the Holy
Father to undertake an expansion of his
responsibilities by assuming the role of
Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese
of Menevia.
ANNIVERSARY OF INSTALLATION – 20th JUNE 2011.
Did you know we have a YouTube chan-nel; St Mary of the Angels & Holy Family, Cardiff on which we regularly post videos explaining points from the catechism, tours of the church or dis-cuss Saints’ feast days? Why don’t you take a look?.
