FROM THE PASTOR
Dear Friends in Christ,
I realize this comes a li le late, but if anybody's s ll on the market for something to give up for Lent, I'd suggest that the following misconcep ons about the Catholic church and about Chris anity in general would be dandy bits of intel-lectual junk to cut loose in the spirit of the season. Author John Allen refers to “purple ecclesiology” as something very worthwhile to give up. What is purple ecclesiology? Basically it is the no on that all things truly “Catholic” take place amidst the clergy. The truth is that the number of ordained clergy in the Catholic Church comes to roughly .04 percent of the total Catholic popula on of 1.2 billion. It should be clear to everyone who has volunteered to work the Strawberry Fes -val over the past 10 or 11 days that the call of Va can II for full ac ve par cipa on was not only for the clergy but for the laity. The Church doesn’t exist for itself, but to change the world, which means if its message is to penetrate the various realms of culture – medicine, law, the academy, poli cs, the economy and so on – it’s ei-ther going to be carried there by laity or not at all. The second popular take on Catholicism that I would recommend you give up is the over played no on that the Church is in decline or in crisis. Yes the Catholic Church in Europe and the United States and in parts of La n America has been rocked by scandal and decline in re-cent years but that’s the short view. Seen from global perspec ve, the Church is actually con nuing to grow. The last half-century witnessed the greatest period of missionary expansion in the 2,000-year history of Catholicism, fueled by explosive growth in the southern hemisphere. Take sub-Saharan Africa as a case in point: The Catholic popula on at the dawn of the 20th century was 1.9 million, while by the end of the century it was more than 130 million, represen ng a staggering growth rate of 6,708 percent. Overall, the global Catholic footprint shot up from 266 million in 1900 to 1.1 billion in 2000, ahead of the overall rate of increase in world popula on, and is s ll rising today. Lastly, lets’ finally give up the popular misconcep on about the Church as the oppressor rather than the oppressed. Stoked by historical images of the Crusades and the Inquisi on, and even by cur-rent percep ons of the wealth and power of church leaders and ins tu ons, it's tough for Western observers to wrap their minds around the fact that in a growing number of global hotspots, Chris ans today are the defenseless oppressed, not the arrogant oppressors. Here's the stark reality of our mes: In the early 21st centu-ry, we are witnessing the rise of a whole new genera on of Chris an martyrs. Chris ans are today, sta s cally speaking, by far the most persecuted religious group on the planet. According to the Frankfurt-based Society for Human Rights, fully 80 percent of all acts of religious discrimina on in the world today are di-rected against Chris ans. The Pew Forum es mates that Chris ans experience per-secu on in a staggering total of 133 na ons, fully two-thirds of all the countries on earth. If you give up anything this Lent, the inability to recognize a growing global war on Chris ans would be a truly inspired choice.
If that first paragraph is too esoteric, you can blame the inspira on for it, the author John Allen Jr. If you’d like a complete copy of this ar cle please let me know. As for ea ng meatless (including chicken…who started the rumor that white meat doesn’t count?) meals on Fridays during Lent…the Knights of Columbus are coming to the rescue with their Fish Fry Dinners over the next few Fridays. Thanks be to God St. Patrick’s Day falls on Saturday so we can enjoy delicious Corned Beef Dinners also provided by the Knights of Columbus next weekend. The Saturday night party in Cronin Hall next weekend is one you will not want to miss!
Peace in Christ, Fr. Tom J. Anastasia, Pastor

LEALTAD TOTAL
