The purpose of Passport To Reading is to encourage recreational reading among K-6th grades and to introduce and/or strengthen the student’s love of reading. It also seeks to build a broader general knowledge base in students through exposing them to new vocabulary in context, as well as increasing reading profi-ciency and comprehension.
Students, grade K-6, receive Reading Passports in which track their journey through various genres of literature. Each month focuses on a different genre. Once a student has completed their passport for the month, the student receives a stamp in his passport. Students work to complete their passport each month in order to complete the program for the entire school year.
Students participating should become well-rounded, knowledg-able, and curious adults. Additionally, an overall improvement in test scores should be observed across the curriculum through increased reading and comprehension skills.

OVCA Elementary Parents,
Welcome to Passport for Reading! Understanding the importance of being an effective reader, we designed this program to be a fun, challenging way to encourage students to read outside of the classroom, and outside of the curriculum. We hope this program helps you, as parents, connect with your child through recreational reading. Passport to Reading underscores the joy of reading as "passports" take students to new worlds and introduce them to new characters. It is also designed to build reading comprehension which will improve your student's ability to to learn from reading. You can help this process by discussing the books you read and talking together about favorite parts, details, and context. Please enjoy this program by schedul-ing some time to read with your child and being involved in the book selection process. The more enjoyable Passport to Reading is for you and your child, the more of an impact it will have.
