Exploring our Solar System
Constellations by Abby CDo you ever see stars that make up shapes in the sky? They are called constellations. There are billions of stars in the sky. We can only see about two thousand. we can see more with a telescope or binoculars. There are clumps of stars all over the universe. They are called galaxies. We live in a galaxy called the milky way. A star is a big hot burning ball of gas made up of hydrogen and helium. Stars live for about 10 billion years! A long time ago people saw shapes made out of stars in the sky. They named then constellations and made up astory about each one. The north star is a special star. It is the only star that does not move. A long time ago sailors used the north star to find there way. The easiest way to find the north star is to find the star at the bottom left corner of the cup on the big dipper and keep on going up till you find the north star. Constellations and stars are cool things in the universe. I liked writing a report about them.
Super Stars by Abby WDo you know what stars are? Stars are big balls of
burning gas and fire. They are found in galaxies. There is an
infinite amount of stars in the sky. More than all the sand from all
the beaches in the world. Stars live for ten billion years. That
is their life. Constellations are shapes made of stars. For example
long ago people would imagine lines connected the stars to
make pictures in the sky. Those people were the Egyptians.
Here are some names of constellations. Orion. Leo ,Big Dipper,
Little Dipper, Auriga and Delphinus. They also made up stories
about each constellation. Stars and constellations are special because they light up
the sky. There could not be life on a star because you could
not land there. And if you could you would burn up. And there
is no air or water. Stars have a place in the sky and without our star we
would not be here.
Venus by AdamVenus is a hot planet and it is the second closest to the sun and almost the size of Earth. It is called Earth’s twin. Venus has no moons or rings it take 255 days to orbit the sun. It is 7,521 miles and 12,101 kilometers across. It is made of iron. There is a volcano on Venus. Yes spacecraft have visited but it was crushed by the atmosphere on Venus. No there can’t be life on Venus because of the poisonous atmosphere. The surface is mostly flat. The atmosphere could crush you. Venus was named after an ancient Roman god of beauty. In conclusion venus interesting because of the poisonous atmosphere and the atmosphere could crush you.
Pluto by AlanDo you know what was the first dwarf planet? Pluto was. Pluto is located in the Kuiper belt. Pluto takes about 248 earth years to orbit around the sun. Pluto is a dwarf planet. Pluto is the farthest planet from the sun than Neptune. It is also very small that’s why it is called a dwarf
planet. Pluto is the smallest planet in our solar system. Pluto is made out of ice and rock. Pluto’s surface looks like snow on earth. Another Dwarf planet called Eris is larger than Pluto. Pluto’s main moon is Charon.
It is half as big as Pluto. Charon was discovered in 1928. Pluto was named
after the Roman God of the underworld.
Sun by AleahWhat is the sun. it is a big ball of
burning gas. The sun is in themilky way galaxy. The sun is about five
billion years old. It is on one of the arms. It is a middle aged
star. Sunspots are dark spots on the sun. They look dark
because they are cooler. Solar flares are explosions on the sun
that send out hot particles. The sun is made of hydrogen
and helium gasses. The sun is going to burn out in 5,000,000
years. It will turn into a red giant and then a white dwarf. The sun
is the most important part ofour solar system.
Comets by AnnieDo you know what travels trough space and never lands on planets? I do, comets. Comets are small ice bodies with longstreaming tails. Comets seem to come from nothing with no warning. In 1986 Halley’s comet was seen for the first time EVER! You’re more likely to see a meteor then a comet. Comets are made of gas, ice and dust.. They travel around the sun in an oval orbit.. Comets are warmed up as they approach the sun. Halley’s comet appears once every 77 years. A British astronomer discovered that a comet tipped Uranus on its side. Comets have no life on them. Comets can die but it can take 14,000 years for a comet to die. No spacecraft have ever landed on a comet. I loved studying about comets. Thanks to our solar system.
Jupiter by Ari
Did you know that Jupiter is made out of gases?
Jupiter travels around the sun every twelve Earth years.
Jupiter is the 5th Planet It is on the other side of the asteroid
belt. Jupiter has a rocky center but the rest of this planet is
made of hydrogen gas. Jupiter is the biggest planet. Jupiter
has more than 60 known moons. Jupiter also has rings made of
dust and ice. Jupiter’s moons and rings all orbit the planet in
the same direction. I like Jupiter because it is big!
Uranus by BennyUranus is the only planet that makes black diamonds! Uranus is the seventh planet from the sun. Uranus travels around the sun once every 84 Earth years. Uranus spins on its side because an asteroid or comet hit it. Uranus is father from the sun then Saturn. Uranus is made out of Methane gas and the gas makes it look blue. It is 31,690 miles across. Uranus has 11 rings. The rings spin from up to down not left to right. Uranus has 27 moons that we know of. Uranus’ two biggest moons are Oberon and Titana. Uranus has twenty-seven moons that we know of. The Hubble Telescope took beautiful pictures of Uranus. Voyager 2 flew past Uranus in 1986. Uranus is the third biggest planet in our solar system.
•
Super Saturn by DaliaDo you know what is the second largest planet? That’s right Saturn is! Saturn is the third plant from our planet earth. Saturn takes 29 1/2 earth years to orbit the sun 1 time because it is so far away from the sun so it needs to make a bigger orbit then our planet earth does. Do you think that Saturn looks the same when you look at it on the first day of May, and you look at it again on the first day of June again? Well if you think yes that is correct. Saturn is made of gasses. It is called a gas planet. It is the sixth planet from the sun. Saturn is 74,900 miles across it is the second largest planet in our solar system. Saturn’s rocky center is about the same size as planet earth. Saturn has at least 56 moon orbiting it. Saturn’s biggest moon is named Titan it is 3,200 miles across. Saturn also has an other moon it is named Enceladus. The surface of Enceladus is covered with ice. Some chunks in Saturn’s rings are as big as a house. The large dark stripes are empty spaces between the rings. There are many
storms on Saturn. One of them is called the Dragon Storm because of its shape. The temperature at the center of Saturn is 26,500 degrees farenheit. Saturn has winds that can travel one thousand miles per hour! That is even faster than any wind on Earth I think Saturn is amazing because I did not know that it had so many rings – it has 1,000.
Black holes by DanielA black hole is the most bizarrre phenomenon that ever occurs in the
universe. Black holes disobey every law of physics. A black hole sucks in anything
that gets too close including light , matter , time and gravity. They are so
heavy that only zero gravity can move it. Imagine you took the earth and start crushing it until it was the size of a golf ball, but it would weigh as much
as earth . Black holes are usually about 24 miles across so use the math formula of pi to imagine how much it would weigh. Black holes constantly form and travel across the universe. Do not worry scientists have done
math and say that there are no black holes currently able to suck up earth. The average black holes is about 24 miles across but some are monsters. The closest black hole is located at the heart of our galaxy. It is pulling stars
out of their orbit and bringing them closer to it. That is why the center of our galaxy is so bright it’s surface is the edge of our universe. Black holes
don’t have any rings or moons but they can have suns. There are an estimated 200,000 ,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 formed a minute in our universe. The surface is called the event horizon (edge of the universe). Black
holes have 90,000 times gravity on earth . Too close to a black hole is about 93,000,000 miles away. If you get within about that the hole would slowly suck toward it .When you get close to it very strange things would start to happen to you. Your legs would be getting pulled on much more than your head you would be stretched to the limit .
When your at the event horizon you would appear to be still but in reality
you would be inside the black hole. Very little is known about these phenemona
Jupiter by DanielleHave you ever wondered about the red spot on Jupiter? Jupiter is the fifth planet in our solar system. It is the
first planet beyond the asteroid belt. Takes 12 earth years to
orbit the sun. Jupiter is 480 million miles from the sun. It
orbits the sun every 11.9 years. Jupiter is the biggest planet in our
solar system. It has a rocky center but the rest of the planet
is made of hydrogen gas. Deep inside Jupiter the hydrogen
changes into solid rock and metal. Jupiter has more than 60
moons.Earth has only one. Jupiter also has rings made of dust.
They both orbit Jupiter. Scientists have used space probes to
study Jupiter’s biggest moons. Io is covered with volcanoes. It
has more volcanoes than any other planet or moon in our sola
system. The surface of Io is always changing. Europa is covered with
a thick layer of ice. Some scientists think there was water
there.
Marvelous Milky Way by Gavri
Did you know our galaxy has awesome things to know ? If you
want to know then listen up. Do you know the name of our
galaxy? Yes, you sure do .It is the milky way of
course . It is called that because it looks like a big blob of milk.
Ancient Greeks thought so. The Milky Way is made up of over
1,000,000,000 stars. This galaxy is called a spiral galaxy. We are
on one of the spiral arms. The Milky Way is in a cluster of 36
galaxies. It orbitsaround the center of the universe.
Blue Uranus by JocyWho got hit by a rock? That’s right
Uranus. Uranus is the 7th planet from the sun.
Uranus is bigger than Earth. It is made of ice and rocks. it
looks like a far away star. It looks blue from the methane gas.
Uranus has 27 moons and at least 11 rings. Uranus is vary
windy. the clouds move about400miles per Hour. Uranus spins on
its side. Long ago a object hit Uranus and it went on its side. It
spins sideways. Uranus was not discovered until 1781
because there wasn’t a powerful telescope. Uranus is special because it spins on
its side!
Neptune by JonathanHave you ever wondered about the
8th planet from the sun? Neptune is the 8th planet from the
sun. Neptune is 30,775 miles away from
Earth and 49,528 km away from Earth. It takes 165 Earth
years to orbit the sun for Neptune. Neptune is made out of
gasses. The surface of Neptune is blue because it has methane
gas. There is a dark spot on the down side of Neptune it is a huge
storm. Neptune has 13 moons. The biggest moon is named
Triton it is mostly made out of ice. Learning about Neptune is very fun
and cool. How about you learn some more!
Pluto by JoshDid you know that Pluto is - 400 degrees temperature? Pluto is in the Kuiper Belt. It is the 9th planet from the sun. Pluto travels around the sun once every 248 Earth years. It is 1450 miles across. It is a dwarf planet because it has an oval orbit and it is in the Kuiper Belt. Pluto is made out of frozen water. Pluto’s moon is almost the size of Pluto. Pluto has 1 moon and the name is Charon. Pluto was discovered in 1890 and they called it Planet X. In 1930 they named it Pluto. The New Horizons space probe was launched in 2006. It should reach Pluto in 2015.
Venus by LoganThe air on Venus is very thick and filled with carbon
dioxide and Sulfuric acid. Venus travels around the sun once
every 225Earth days. This journey is Venus’s orbit. Venus is the 2nd closest planet to Earth and the 2nd from
the sun. Venus is the easiest to see from earth because it is
so bright .You can often see Venus when the sky is still
quite light . Telescopes cannot see through Venus’ thick
clouds. Venus is almost the same size as Earth. It is sometimes
called Earth’s twin. Venus spins in the opposite direction of
Earth. The high temperaturs on Venus is 896 degrees. The
highest mountain on Venus is called Maxwell Montes. It is
about 7 miles high. Venus’ surface is mostly flat and very dry.
It is bumpy and hard. Venus has no moons. Venus is the
hottestplanet in the solar system!
Saturn by MickeyDo you know the second-biggest planet in our solarsystem? Saturn is! Read on to find out more. Saturn travels around the sun once every 29 ½ Earth years. Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun. Saturn is between Jupiter and Uranus. Saturn is a gas planet of hydrogen gas. It is also the lightest in weight. The center is plain rock, then liquid gas then hydrogen gas.Saturn has about 23 moons. It’s biggest moon is Titan. Saturn has many rings made of gas, dust and ice. Saturn has a lot of storms all over the planet. The biggest storm is called the Dragon Storm.
I liked studying Saturn.
Marvelous Moon by MiraHi I am Mira Brown. welcome to the Moon center. Are
you ready to take a tour of the Moon? Lets go! The Moon does not exactly orbit the sun. It orbits our
Earth. Which in this case, orbits the sun. Fun fact about the moon: it
takes about 29 ½ Earth days for the moon to orbit the Earth. The moon
was formed about 4.5 billion years ago. Our moon is more than ¼ of the
Earth’s size, but it could hardly be more different. It has no atmosphere, no life and no water. Over 3 billion years
ago, thousands of meteorites bombarded it, which made
craters. Only 12 people have been on the moon, during the
time 1969 - 1972. Our moon does not have volcanoes or storms.
One of the 12 people on the moon was Neil Armstrong. He went
to the moon during 1969. I love the moon. I hope you do too!
Milky Way by NaomiDo you know which galaxy is home to Earth? It is the Milky
Way. Astronomers believe that the Milky Way was formed out
of a large, round cloud of cold gas that collapsed on itself 16
billionyears ago! A huge group of stars is called a galaxy. Our
galaxyis the Milky Way. Our sun is in the milky way galaxy. If
you could see the Milky Way from space it would look like a
huge Spinning pinwheel. The Milky Way galaxy has about two hundred Billion stars and countless other objects besides.
The sun is On one of the arms of the Milky Way. It’s a spiral
galaxy. Everything in the Milky way orbits the center of the
galaxy. Astronomers think there might be an enormous black hole
atthe center of the milky way. The entire milky way is about 100,000 light years across. A interesting fact I learned is
that the Milky Way is home to Earth.
Earth by NoyaDo you know why half of the earth is day time and half of the earth night time? Because the Sun is shining on one side! Earth is third from the sun and takes one year to orbitaround the sun. It also spins. It takes one day to spin a whole circle. The Earth is made out of rock. Earth has life on it because we have water. It takes 7,926 miles to walk across the Earth. We have one moon and it is the only place man has visited. The surface is mostly mountains. The highest one is Mt. Everest.Billions of years ago Earth used to be really hot. It got colder and colder. It turned white, then it turned green, blue and white. Later a meteorite hit it and clouds covered it. There is life on Earth because there is wateron Earth.
Meteoroids by OmerWhat is the only object that flies and enters a planet?
That’s right! Meteoroids.A meteoroid is a piece of metal and rock that came from the asteroid belt. Meteoroids were first asteroids but when two Asteroids bonk together they become meteoroids. After a meteoroid bonks it doesn’t orbit the sun! It flies through space to the planet earth. You can find a meteoroid in space. When a meteoroid crashes you can find the crash in a dessert a grassy place or where dinosaurs lived. When the meteoroid hit Earth the dinosaurs died. Large meteoroids are believed to come from the asteroid belt. Most small meteoroids are pieces that have broken off from comets. But they’re mostly large meteoroids. Meteoroids are made of metal rock. The meteoroids surface looks like big craters that comets crashed into. Meteoroids have craters but don’t have volcanoes or storms. There couldn’t be life on a meteoroid because it’s too small and there is no water or air.Maybe one day we will see a meteoroid!
Mars by Peytonyou know if anyone walked on Mars? No, but space
probes have been there!! Wouldn’t it be awesome to walk on
mars! It takes 687 earth days to orbit the sun. Mars is the
closest to us.(earth). people could live on Mars in the future but it
could take about 10,000 to 100,000 years! Mars has two
moons in orbit around it. Mars gets it’s reddish color from rust in
the soil. Mars is almost half the size of earth. Mars is a rock
planet. Mars has a lot of crater s, mountains, and canyons.
Mars is thefourth closest to our star.(sun). Mars looks like a bright
red star from Earth. Mars has ice at its North and South
poles. Mars is very cool to look at. Mars has a thin
atmosphere so sunlight can get in but at night it is very cold. Mars has
no rings but has 2 moons. Mars’ moons are Phobos which means
fear and Deimos which means panic. Mars has mountains
bigger than Mt. Everest. Scientists believe that Martians used
to live
on Mars because they found ice at its poles.
Meteoroids by SydneyDo you ever wonder what a shooting star is? It is a meteoroid. Meteoroids are made from parts of comets and asteroids. People say that meteoroids are from the asteroid belt. Meteoroids don’t orbit the sun. Because then it would be an asteroid. They leave the asteroid belt because asteroids hit other ones. The dinosaurs died because a meteorite hit Earth and dust went everywhere and the dinosaurs could not breath. Meteoroids are big or small. Meteoroids are made of rock. The surface looks like a rock. And it has small holes. Meteoroids are also made out of pieces of the moon and Mars. Meteoroids are smaller then asteroids. Different meteoroids travel at different speeds. Some meteoroids travel together. Something special about meteoroids is that they are different sizes and they can be seen every day. Meteoroids are so cool!
Neptune by TahelDo you know Neptune's surface is
blue? The gases on Neptune's surface
make Neptune’s surfaceturn the color blue. Neptune is
the 4th biggest planet. It can fit about 60 Earths in it. Neptune is
30,775 miles across. Windsfly around Neptune and they are
up to 1,200 miles per hour. The center of Neptune is made of
rock and ice. Neptune has 13 moons. Neptune’s biggest
moon is called Triton. It is about
¾ the size of earth’s moons. Neptune is cold!
