The Messenger ~ October 2012 Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and School
San Clemente, California
“Inspired to Love, Encouraged to Think, and Sent to Serve”
“You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts,
known and read by everyone.” 2 Corinthians 3.2
In the little passage taken above, Paul is writing to
his fellow Christians in Corinth about the need for
endorsement from others. He stands on the fact
that he needs no letter to them or from them
because they themselves are a living letter
proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ. In
other words, talk is cheap, and Paul is encouraged
by the fact that at least some of the Corinthians are
so clearly living the life of discipleship that they
can be read like a letter themselves. One merely
needs to look at their lives and it is clear that they
are being motivated and driven by the love of God
in Jesus Christ.
On one hand this is quite reassuring, that the
message of Jesus actually finds its way into the
human heart and is lived so courageously that none
can fail to see him in the lives of his followers. On
the other hand, this passage always sends a little bit
of shiver down my spine, as I wonder if people see
the love of Christ being lived out in me. This of
course begs the question as to what are the ‘marks’
of the Christian life? We could repeat the list of
the fruits of the spirit from Galatians: love, joy,
peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness and self-control. There is definitely
enough there to define the Christian life.
But there are other places we might go as well,
perhaps to Romans 12 where Paul tells us: “Love
must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is
good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor
one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in
zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the
Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction,
faithful in prayer. (Romans 12.9-12). Or I suppose
a case could even be made for the Ten
Commandments as the mark of the Christian life.
Or perhaps even simpler we could go with Martin
Luther and suggest that the mark of a Christian is
simply a sheep who hears his master’s voice. The
only problem I have with that is at least in my
world I’m often prone to selective hearing! I hear
some of the things that Jesus says, but often
conveniently miss those things that cause me more
bother—let’s face it most of us are busy enough
without Jesus reminding us of who we should love
and where we should go.
So it brings me back to the question, what are the
marks of the Christian life that allow others to see
Christ in us? I’ll give you two suggestions and
you can of course push back. Number one for me is
“Generosity.” By this I do mean the sharing of
your resources on behalf of others. But generosity
is so much more than a ‘hand out.’ Generosity is
the tangible proof that I’ve come to believe—by the
work of the Holy Spirit—that God can be trusted.
That my life is truly a gift and that gifts are meant
to be shared with others. Now certainly there are
generous people who are not Christians—God bless
them all—but I find generosity to be the most
practical and visible mark for the Christian to
proclaim that Jesus is Lord! For every act of
generosity is a step in partnership with God on
behalf of the world that God loves.
If the first mark of the Christian life is generosity,
than for me the second mark would be Hospitality.
As I read the Gospels I am always amazed at the
hospitality that is being offered. Hospitality may in
fact simply be generosity of spirit, which is the
willingness to allow others to come under our
protection of love, nourishment and security.
Hospitality flourishes when we not only welcome
strangers into our midst, but also those known
entities that if truth be known we could probably do
without! Hospitality becomes a way of living and

serving as we see ourselves, what we have and what
we do as a way to provide for the welcome and care
of others. Besides a strong worship experience, the
most important element of congregational life is a
strong sense of hospitality where we are always
willing to extend our arms just a little bit further in
love.
I leave you with this; If someone were to read your
lives today would they point me most clearly to
Christ?
Peace!
Pastor Jeff

“Covenantal Conversations: Christians and
Jews in dialogue.” A good deal of Jewish-
Christian dialogue has occurred during the last sixty
years. It has been fruitful not only in helping
Christians and Jews understand each other more
accurately and more fully, but in prompting
Christians to rethink some aspects of their own
religious tradition. Christians have come to
appreciate aspects of the biblical tradition that they
may have overlooked or undervalued. We’ll use a
DVD to initiate our conversations as we explore the
richness of the Jewish tradition. It is hard to
comprehend Christianity without a basic
understanding of the Jewish faith.

“How to read the Bible…and get something out
of it!” Many folks have confessed a desire to read
their Bible, but have also voiced their frustration in
being able to engage with scripture on a personal
level. Utilizing a video format featuring Dr. Mark
Alan Powell we’ll look at the many ways you can
interpret scripture and lift up those particular
Lutheran perspectives that have been helpful
through the ages. Reading the Bible should be a
joy of every believer and this course is meant to
help bring that joy to the surface.

HOLY LAND TRIP:
SIGN-UP NOW!!
P astor Jeff will be
leading a trip to
Israel this coming
summer July 2 – 11,
2013. Over the years
many people have asked
Pastor about leading a
trip to the Holy Land and
the opportunity has
finally come! We picked
July in order to minimize
the crowds and also to hopefully allow a greater amount
of folks to talk advantage of the trip. This is not a
leisurely jaunt as there will be no days to sit by the pool
but will be a spiritually rich and full itinerary of walking
where Jesus walked and experiencing the land of Israel
first hand.
Highlights include: The city of Jerusalem including
visits to the Mount of Olives, the Western Wall of the
Temple, the Temple mount, the way of the cross and the
church of the Holy Sepulcher. We’ll also visit such
noteworthy places as Bethlehem, the shepherds fields
and Bethany. In the Judean wilderness we’ll head to
Jericho, Qumran (Dead Sea scrolls), the Dead Sea and
Masada. While in the Galilee we’ll visit Nazareth,
Cana, the Mount of the Beatitudes, the Mount of
Transfiguration, Capernaum and have Holy
Communion while sailing on the Sea of Galilee.
Finally we’ll also have time to visit one of the
Decapolis cities, Caesarea by the sea and Mt. Carmel.
Price for the trip Includes: all accommodations,
Breakfast and dinner daily, Airfare, All entrance fees,
All ground transportation, lunch at the Shepherds Field.
The approximate cost $3,880 (cash price), $3,996
(regular price). Single supplement extra. Land only
price $1,875 (cash price), $1,995 (regular price).

Left Behind and Loving It?
Author/Pastor D. Mark Davis comes to
Our Savior’s Sunday ~ October 7, 2012
at worship and special Lecture Series!
Mark your calendars
for Sunday October
7th as Dr. D. Mark
Davis comes to Our
Savior’s to offer a
different perspective
than the fear and
doom oriented end of
the world teaching
that is so prevalent in
much of the church. “
R a t h e r t h a n
presenting a steroid-
buffed Jesus wrapped
in an American flag and "coming again in clouds
of gunfire," Left Behind and Loving It invites
readers to approach some of the most
controversial and scary portions of the Scriptures
with the utter confidence that "God's steadfast
love endures forever." Rather than asserting a
hope premised on a few chosen ones escaping
the world, Left Behind and Loving It argues that
if it is Jesus who is to return (and not his evil
twin), then the second coming has redemption
written all over it. Many today cannot accept the
escapist, violent, end-of-the-world scenario
envisioned by "Left Behind" theology. Left
Behind and Loving It invites readers not to fear
but to trust in God's steadfast love and look at the
finitude of the world with hope in an infinitely
loving God.” Dr. Davis will be preaching on
Sunday Morning and offering a Lecture with
Questions and Answers following on Sunday
Afternoon! Get the word
out about this great
opportunity.

October 2012 ~ Music Notes
It is October. Our fall programs are in full swing and
we are getting ready to head into “the holidays”. At
Our Savior’s, we celebrate a church “holiday” that is
uniquely Lutheran – Reformation. One of the great
gifts that we got from Martin Luther, besides the
Reformation, was music. Just as Luther believed
that the church was for everyone, he also believed
that church music should be accessible to everyone.
To me, this means that music should be easy to sing/
hear and should complement worship.
However, if you talk to any 3 three people, you will
get 3 different opinions on what kind of music is
easy to hear and complements worship. Why is this?
There are many reasons – familiarity, culture and
even physiological. I found an article in an online
publication called “Brain World” that discussed how
music affects our brains.
…when you hear music, listening also involves
the memory centers in the brain, such as the
hippocampus and lowest parts of the frontal
lobe. Tapping along with the music gets your
cerebellum involved. Reading music involves
the visual cortex, and listening to or recalling
lyrics will involve language centers in the
temporal and frontal lobes.
__If you actually perform music, your frontal
lobe for planning, and your motor and sensory
cortex will activate as well. Because playing
music requires co-ordination of motor control,
somatosensory touch and auditory information,
most musicians are known to have developed a
greater ability than the average person to use
both hands. Increased networks between the left
and right brain form thick fibers.
…Generally music has been regarded as a right-
brain activity because of its reliance on
creativity…There is evidence of left hemisphere
predominance in musicians compared to musical
amateurs. Music lateralization towards the right
hemisphere is seen in inattentive listeners.
__Which side of the brain engages with music
can also be subject to cultural influence. The
Japanese process their traditional popular music
in the left hemisphere, whereas Westerners

Music and language are processed separately;
they are localized in homologous regions of the

When we listen to/make music, we are not aware of
these processes. I’m glad – I like to enjoy the

Youth and Children’s Ministry
by Bob Cooper - Director of Youth and Children’s Ministries
Good-bye Summer OK, summer is over and we are now in “Fall
Mode”, a particularly good time to live in San
Clemente, the weather is great, the roads and beaches
are less crowded, and the youth programs at Our
Savior’s are in full swing!
Our High School group is still basking in the
glow of a fantastic trip to the ELCA National Youth
Gathering in New Orleans and are in fact, reuniting
with our partner groups for a beach bonfire on
October 13th.
The High School group meets every Sunday
evening, we begin at 7:00pm in the sanctuary for
opening worship along with the congregation, then
move into the youth room for our devotions, bible
study, teen silliness,…. If you are of high school age
or know someone of high school age, you (or your
child, friend, whatever) are welcome to join us, no
experience required!
The Middle School group has also returned,
bigger, better, and more loving than ever. Besides the
regularly scheduled Wednesday evening (6:30pm-
8:00pm) meetings, on October 19th we will be
joining The Lutheran Church of the Resurrection for
our annual “Late Nighter” with off-site events that
are always a blast! On October 24th Middle School
will again be presenting the “Haunted Youth Room”
as part of our “Trick or Trunk” celebration. Speaking
of Trick or Trunk, we will be hosting our annual
Trick or Trunk event on Wednesday, October 24th at
6:00pm! This is always a LOT of good clean fun, so
plan to attend, or better yet host a trunk!
We have also seen a lot of interest in our
upper elementary school group, “The Kids Club”.
The Kids Club meets on the first Tuesday of each
month from 3:00pm-4:00pm in the youth room and
is open to any child in grades 3-5, friends are
welcome too! We are planning some fun field trips
as well as a winter retreat later this year so come by
and join in on the fun!
Wednesday evenings are all about the family,
We have a family pizza dinner on the patio at
5:00pm followed by a Bible Study with Pastor Jeff
for the adults (nursery care is available) at 5:30pm.
The “Hands-on Bible” children’s program for the
little ones ages 4 – 3rd grade is also at 5:30pm. This
is a wonderful family tradition and a great way to
build a solid faith formation.
Our Confirmation classes are looking great
with eager students ready to explore their faith and
grow in Christian discipleship; it is very exciting to
be a part of it!
I’m looking forward to a great Fall, see you
around the Church!

First, I want to thank all of you who have come to
me after reading last month’s newsletter. Your
generous offers of help have given me
encouragement and new ideas for the upcoming
year.
SO!!! We just had our very first “Name Tag
Sunday”. I am anxious to hear your reactions!
Many of you told me that name tags are a great way
to help us remember the names of our fellow
members. Did it work? We all think we know
almost everyone in our congregation, but do we
know their names? I know I don’t. I make an effort,
always, to greet new people and to introduce myself,
but too often forget their names. Especially their
last names. I know that seeing them in writing will
help greatly.
While my part in the wonderful success of Rally
Day was truly minimal, what a great event it was!!
Many new people came invited by our members and
I think all were impressed with the spirit of our
people. Katherine deserves a big THANK YOU for
her efforts.
Some of you will be getting a call from me asking
you to try being our greeter the next few Sundays. I
promise it will not be a chore, but rather a blessing.
Once you agree to serve I will send the minimal
guidelines. I am betting that you will want to serve
again once you give it a try.
Now! What should we plan for the future? I
mentioned Recognition Sunday in my last letter.
That will be my next goal. My thought is to
recognize our military families in November. Not
only do they bring much to our church but they are
giving to our country every day! I welcome any and
all suggestions as to how to do this. I have some
ideas, but they certainly are not finalized.
In December we will have a booth in San
Clemente’s Santa’s Village, downtown. We will
need at least two but preferably three families to man
the booth. I have requested a game booth but have
not yet heard confirmation that we get it. The date is
December 1st, from 1:00pm to 5:00pm at the
Community Center. I have not done this before, but
Pastor assures me that it is fun. Since we are
allowed to have a banner and handouts, it is also an
opportunity to share the good news about Our
Savior’s.
Are you aware that our updated directory is online at
www.oursaviorsonline.com? There are pictures, as
well, although our long-time member pictures are a
bit out of date. Still, they will help you when you
forget a person’s name. The password for the online
photo directory is: Grace Alone
If you know someone who may have an interest in
one of our Bible studies, even if they are not a
member of our congregation please invite them and
offer to take them. It is a wonderful way to
introduce our wonderful members.
May the Lord be with each and every one of you.

Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity
Volunteers from Our Savior’s spent the day working on our Thrivent Builds Habitat for Humanity home in Santa Ana on September 22. Thanks to Steve Kos, Pete Reasin, Debbi Townsend and Linda Howard for devoting their Saturday. We worked alongside future homeowner, Hilda, and readied the home for the final
framing inspection.
25th Annual South County Hunger Walk Sunday, October 21, 1pm
Community Center, Del Mar Street (Begin & End)
It’s that time of year again. Please join members of Our Savior’s and the entire San Clemente Community for the Hunger Walk. It’s quick and easy (suitable for all ages) and a fun way to raise money and awareness for Family Assistance Ministries. The Hunger Walk is FAM’s largest fundraiser and 100% of the proceeds goes directly to client assistance. Al Riebau will be on the patio Sunday mornings in October collecting donations, providing donor sheets. A big thank you to Thrivent Financial for Lutherans for donating $1,000 in matching funds.
ENCORE! 5th Annual Variety Show Saturday, October 27, 7pm

The Social Concerns Ministry team will be going and invite you to join us!

LWR Fair Trade Gift Fair Sunday morning, November 4 Our fair trade gift fair and catalog sale will benefit Lutheran World Relief artisans from all over the world. We will pre-order items to have for sale and take catalog orders, too. Orders will be placed by November 9 - well in advance of Christmas. You can browse the catalog at www.lwr.org/handcraft. Fair trade sales provide a means for people to earn a living wage and lift themselves out of poverty. By placing a bulk order through Lutheran World Relief, you receive free shipping and no sales tax. 10% of the proceeds will be used for OSLC Social Concerns projects. A win… win… win!

other physical and earth science related
concepts through hands-on activities.

Barnyard Bash
Wednesday, October 31st @ 9:00am
This year’s annual celebration of Halloween
and the Fall season is on Wednesday, Oct.
31st, beginning at 9:00 with Spellman’s Magic
Spectacular, a blend of magic and comedy.
After the presentation the children will be free
to enjoy carnival-like games
and activities hosted by each
classroom. Students and
faculty are encouraged to
come to school that day
dressed as a farmer,
scarecrow, cowboy/girl,
farm animal, etc.
Pilgrim Overnight
On Thursday, October 4th the
fourth grade students will
spend the night on board the
Tallship Pilgrim, located in
the Dana Point Harbor. They
will be enacting as nearly as
possible the life of a 19th
century sailor. This program
began in 1980 as a hands-on
attempt to make history come
alive for young people.
Pilgrim instructors developed the characters based
upon Richard Henry Dana’s book, Two Years
Before the Mast and used these characters to
immerse participants in the harsh world Dana faced
in the California cattle hide trade as he rounded
Cape Horn on his voyage to Alta California.
Meet the Masters artist, Andy Warhol, (1928-1987)
will be introduced to our students on Monday,
Oct. 22nd. Andy Warhol fascinated the world
with his simple, bright artwork of popular,
everyday items and famous people of the
1960’s. He wanted to be remembered as a
“can of soup.” Campbell’s of course! The art
activity that the children partake in will
emphasize color using
tissue, construction
paper, markers and
crayons.
