Organic Chemistry
What is organic Chemistry?
• Covalent compounds that contain carbon are called organic compounds
• covalent compounds that don't contain carbon are called inorganic compounds
2 reasons why organic compounds are important
• 1st: Living things are made from them (plants or animals)
• 2nd: Chemical that are contained in your body are nearly organic
Examples of Organic Compounds
Hydrocarbons
• the simplest organic compounds.
• They are made up of ONLY the elements carbon and hydrogen
Methane
• 1. Methane is also formed in swamps, and in the digestive systems of cows – anytime things decay without oxygen present, methane is formed.
3 Hydrocarbons that contain 2 carbons
• Ethane= found in natural gas
3 Hydrocarbons that contain 2 carbons
• Ethylene
3 Hydrocarbons that contain 2 carbons
• Acetylene
3 Carbon hydrocarbon
• Propane
4 Carbon Hydrocarbon
• Butane
three isomers with the formula C5H12:
Linear
• Linear: (thermoplastic) soften when heatedexamples: Tupperware, plastic bottle
• Branched: (thermoplastic) soften when heated. Flexible, bendable.– Examples: Ziploc bag, plastic wrap
Cross- Linked: (thermosetting) durable hard to break—
-Examples: safety goggles, playground equip.
Isomers
and
polymers
• Molecules like proteins, fats, carbohydrates, hormones, and DNA which are found in living things are all organic compounds.
