Operations First Quarter 2018
January 1- March 31 Town of Pincher Creek
Departmental Overview The first quarter of 2018 was all about snow! With record accumulations, our team worked
tirelessly trying to combat mother nature and maintain connectivity throughout town. As snow
fell on February 23-24, a wind event necessitated the closure of highways in the region. Staff
supported both the emergency command center as well as the reception center while working
to ensure priority routes throughout the community remained passible for emergency
response.
When extreme weather hits the community, it challenges our staff and resources to achieve
our objectives safely and in a timely manner while working under extraordinary conditions
which can prove hazardous if not done properly. The number of compliments received through
our citizens request program acknowledging the accomplishments and efforts of our staff
throughout these events has been very much appreciated! Here is just one example of the kind
feedback received;
“HUGE shout out to the snow removal crew! Nowhere in
Western Canada can you have a foot of snow and have
main street cleared the next day. Good Job!”
Operations staff will be taking all the feedback received throughout the winter into
consideration as we sit down in the coming months to review the winter street maintenance
policy and investigate the inclusion of certain trails into a maintenance policy and logistics
surrounding alley clearing requests that were received this winter.
Snow accumulation along the North Hill trail system – February 26, 2018
Other overall activities that operations staff participated in include investigations into waste
management and recyclables, consideration on this front has been given to what other
municipalities are currently doing and what the feasibility of potential integration into our
community could look like.
The first quarter saw the conclusion of the Medically At-Risk Driver pilot project partnership to
explore development and implementation of an alternative transportation system for seniors
and medically challenged drivers. As staff completed the final report for submission, we took
time to reflect upon our appreciation of the year long partnership and looked at ways the
learnings from this project could be utilized throughout other areas of the department.
Administratively, the operations department prepared 33 letters, 10 requests for decision and
processed 2 requests for proposals and corresponding tender rewards
We are gearing up for an action packed second quarter as we look to host a public disaster
preparedness event on May 8th in honour of national emergency preparedness week. We will
also be celebrating national public works week from May 20-26 with a proclamation event and
operations meet and greet, water treatment plant tours and snow plow blade painting! June 16
will be our annual toxic round up fair where we will be collecting paint, electronics and
household hazardous waste for proper disposal. This event takes place alongside our reuse fair,
which is not in it’s 9th year and going strong! This is an opportunity for community members to
bring household items in working condition that they no longer need/want and drop them off,
free of charge, for someone else who may need/want it to collect, also free of charge!
We welcome all residents to join us at any of these upcoming events and hope to see you
there!
