The Hacker’s culture
Richard Stallman
In 1985, Stallman created the Free Software Foundation, a tax exempt charity, to support his work and that of his collaborators. Stallman personally created an enormous body of software: GCC (C compiler), GDB (debugger), Emacs (text editor), and a number of other tools.

The "open source" label itself came out of a strategy session held on February 3rd 1998 in Palo Alto, California

There is a community, a shared culture, of expert programmers and networking wizards that traces its history back through decades to the first time-sharing minicomputers. The members of this culture originated the term ‘hacker’.
Hackers built the Internet.
Hackers made the Unix/Linux operating system what it is today.
Hackers run Usenet.
Hackers make the World Wide Web work.
