OverviewOverview
New millennium:
• Privileging of trials data as dominant framework for defining evidence
• Increasing relevance of broader range of research paradigms, especially with practitioners leading to mixed methods & pluralism
2008:
• Rawlins, M.D. (2008). De testimonio: on the evidence for decisions about the use of therapeutic interventions. The Harveian Oration. London: Royal College of Physicians.
• Revision of Depression Guidelines - consultation exercise & report
2009:
• Mental Health Providers Forum (MHPF)
• Four panels: Philosophy, Science, User, & Campaign

OverviewOverview
Purpose:
• To construct an inclusive model for synthesizing research evidence in the psychological therapies
• Mimic teleo-analytic approach [teleo = thorough/complete]
Types of research:
1. Randomized controlled trials 2. Meta-analytic studies 3. Large-scale practice-based studies 4. Qualitative approach 5. Case studies 6. Change process research 7. Client preference studies 8. Service delivery research 9. Group focused approach10. Health economics approach

OverviewOverview
Plan:
• To document strengths and limitations of research approaches
• Find ways of showing how broader evidence yields credible evidence
• Find examples whereby trials evidence is misleading (i.e., fallible)
• Focus on one presentation (e.g., depression) to show how synthesis of
available evidence might yield differing but credible results
• Learn from other disciplines (e.g., education, public health)
• Broaden science panel (include users)
• Increase national & international members
