CESNET
CESNET2 network Dark fibre experimental facility (EF)
5 112 km leased fibres (high coverage on 78 864 km2 )– Including 995 km of single fibre lines
– Including Experimental facility 535 km of dark fibre
4CEF Networks Workshop 2009
Motivation for lit fibre service
Full fibre capacity can be dedicated for NREN! (no return to traditional telco services)
NREN can share leased dark fibre with other organizations (legal bodies) Lighting is outsourced (Some NRENs has no staff experienced in optics
and electronics) Buying of service instead of investment into equipment (OPEX instead of
CAPEX) Costs of adding lambdas (or other extensions) should be part of contract Provider will obtain experience with new type of service and can offer
this new type of service to other customers Deployment of new photonics devices – technology transfer to telco
providers
5CEF Networks Workshop 2009
Used procedure – what we learned
Detailed description of procuring of lit fibres is on http://www.ces.net/events/cef2007/p/altmannova.ppt
Project of lighting can be prepared by NREN staff or by independent company Contract with one provider per whole line Detailed description of acceptance agreement (part of handover report)
- Description of the line (address, contact persons, length, attenuation…)- Channel plan- Block diagram of the line (equipment, points of power measurement)- Tables and charts of measurement- Setting of equipment- Result and conclusion
6CEF Networks Workshop 2009
Ways of lit fibres service acquiring
Upgrade of leased dark fibre lines (the most applied solution) – extensive experience
Tender for lit fibre HW order and deployment by own staff (verification of
new methods)

Steps of history
First CL (CzechLight) deployment in the year 2004, specifically CLA PB01 (CzechLight Amplifier 2in1, Booster and Preamplifier) was on Praha – Plzeň line with length of 159km in CzechLight EF and on Praha – Hradec Králové, length of 150km in CESNET2 network.
Since March 2005 CLA DI01 (CzechLight Amplifier DualInline)has been successfully working on CzechLight EF line Praha-Brno, 284km, as one and only inline amplifier.
At the beginning of 2006 CLA PB01 was equipped on the first Cross Border Fibre (CBF) line Brno – Bratislava, 182km. In the middle of 2006 CBF Brno – Vienna, 224km was deployed by a new prototype CLA PB02.

RESULTS Enough time for project preparing and negotiation is
necessary
After implementation and testing, 15 upgraded lines of CESNET2 are running with very high reliability
Projects are successful and can be repeated
