2 Workshop Questions
• What will facilities / theoretical developments / organizational initiatives in nuclear data be able to do for nuclear astro in the next 10 years?
• Is nuclear data in good shape for the FRIB era? What are needs?
• How can we better connect the astro & nuclear communities ?
• What are potential synergies of nuclear astrophysics data with other areas ?
• What are possible next steps / organization ?

3 Nuclear Astrophysics Data Status - Positives
• some terrific investigator-led efforts !

4 Nuclear Astrophysics Data Status - Positives
• online resources are continually expanding & improving • JINA REACLIB – now at version 2
• UNC STARLIB – new resource with rate uncertainties
• KADONIS – still going strong
• MESA – NUGRID project
• JINA R-matrix code
• WEBNUCLEO at Clemson
• Computational Infrastructure – combines tools for rates and simulations, JINA REACLIB v2, sharing of libraries / simulations, simulation analysis
• bigbangonline.org – Monte Carlo BBN calculations online
• NACRE, LLNL, ULB/NETGEN, LANL T2, Tommy Rauscher, LBNL, TUNL A<20…
• LLNL NADS
• nuclearmasses.org – sharing / viz of evaluated / experimental / theoretical masses
• NNDC MACS

5 Nuclear Astrophysics Data Status - Positives
• Community Interest • recent NIC tutorials [Cyburt] • mini-workshop Fall 2011 [NNDC & JINA]
• USNDP / NNDC interest in this work • MACS project - Boris Pritychencko
• Astro Task Force to encourage collaborative work

6 Nuclear Astrophysics Data Status - Challenges
• USNDP / NNDC has insufficient resources for a substantial evaluation effort dedicated to nuclear astrophysics
• a community evaluation initiative in 2007 had some interest – and now has dedicated software tools – but never got started
• evaluations are key ! critical assessment of all data on a reaction / nuclide
• evaluations are not keeping pace with measurements

7 Nuclear Astrophysics Data Status - Challenges
• important reactions from the 2007 Trento meeting

8 Nuclear Astrophysics Data Status - Challenges
• PI-led efforts often suffer from low manpower, significant turnover, modest scope, little funding, little institutional recognition
• lack of interest / respect by many in both nuclear and astro field
• evaluations generally seen as a responsibility for “others” – instead of being integrated with measurements & theory work

9 Nuclear Astrophysics Data Status - Challenges masses of 48 unstable nuclides just measured with CPT at ANL CARIBU
FRIB
– USNDP initiative on evaluations of data on unstable nuclei
132Sb+ isomeric and ground states
– USNDP funding for data center at FRIB
– expansion in manpower / features of XUNDL (latest unevaluated data) – large community-based evaluation initiative [restart 2007 effort] – single PI evaluation initiatives
• Rapidly increasing amounts of data on unstable nuclei in the FRIB era • Possible strategies to handle evaluations / disseminations

10 Nuclear Astrophysics Data – Possible Strategies
• “Restart” the community evaluation effort that was discussed in 2007 in Trento
• Explore the possibility of creating a new USNDP Center at FRIB
• fallback option – USNDP evaluation effort on unstable nuclei

11 Nuclear Astrophysics Data – Possible Strategies
• software solutions to help with compilation / dissemination – data harvesting
– customizable visualization tools – running codes – nuclear and astro simulation – online “in the cloud”
retrieve info from international databases
get data
– evaluation templates and workflow helpers – do more with less

12 Nuclear Astrophysics Data – Connections
• simulation studies are a natural way to connect three communities – nuclear physics (experimental & theoretical) – nuclear data – astrophysics
• modelers running simulations often – drive improvements in nuclear data libraries
– are appreciative of nuclear data efforts – work closely with experimentalists / evaluators
• suggest to reach out to modelers for any future data efforts

13 Nuclear Astrophysics Data – attitudes & training
• IF evaluations (partial / streamlined) can be integrated with measurement work by MANY in the community communities
THEN there is a hope to evaluations to keep up with measurements – advantage: a portion of the work is typically already done, just a few more steps… – advantage: doesn’t really need extra funding, just a willingness to do it
– disadvantages: bias toward new experiment, sometimes lack of familiarity …
• requires PIs to familiarize the next generation of nuclear scientists with nuclear data tools, approaches, online resources
– presentations / training sessions at schools example: Exotic Beam Summer School 2012 – lecture by Filip Kondev – technical workshops on evaluations / tools / resources – the PIs also need relevant exposure !

• needs: EVALUTIONS !
• community-led initiatives have promise … but need a push
• explore synergies with observational databases
• simulation efforts naturally connect nuclear / data / astro communities
• PI-led initiatives will play a strong role • an FRIB data center could really help
• evaluations fall far short of needs – will be magnified by FRIB
• What are possible next steps / organization ? • community-led evaluation initiative • an FRIB data center
• great online resources and small evaluation efforts
• attitude / training • software assistants
