Called to Love, Called to ServeFrom the moment God called humanity into being, God continues callinghumanity to love ... to love God and to love others. Integral to living our love forGod and others is answering Gods call to serve, to help, to care for, to sustain, toclothe, to feed, to comfort, to teach, to ... fill in the blank.
"For as in one body we have many parts, and all the parts do not have the samefunction, so we, though many, are one body in Christ"(Romans 12:4).
Though a familiar piece of Scripture, the Apostle Pauls description of the Churchas the Body of Christ helps us to better appreciate the worlds need for the
Church and the blessing that each of us can be to the work of the Church, will ofGod, and lives of others. And remember, none of this is about being self-righteous or sanctimonious about our crunchy, crispy, Christian Goodness ...were no better than anyone else, were simply responding to the Call for whichwe are listening.
Simply within the walls of Trinity there are many ways for each of us to serve.Whether you bring your intellect and heart to the work of a committee, such asMission & Action or Christian Education, or you participate in all the laboriousand necessary projects of Buildings & Grounds, you are answering Gods call.Trinity brings people together in service in more ways and more places thaninside the building at 2125 Tower Drive, Woodbury, there are also opportunities
to volunteer with organizations like Family Place, Feed My Starving Children,Extra Innings, and domestic and international mission trips.
Once again, or still, it is time to step back to quietly and prayerfully considerwhat sense of being called you feel. How and where is God calling you to be aneye, an ear, a hand, a foot, a mouth as part of the Body of Christ? Our faithgrows deeper and stronger as our faith moves within the world around us.Through fellowship, prayer, friendship, common purpose, shared passion andloving compassion, the Body of Christ works toward achieving Gods purposes inthis world. Big or small, long-term orshort, all these works need all of us insome way ... in our own way.

MUSINGS AND AMUSINGS...
FROM THE PASTORS DESK
A late night talk show recently featured American author, Alan
Furst. Furst is primarily known for his historical spy novels set just priorto and during the Second World War. On the show, Furst said that after
WWII, French citizens who had helped the resistance movement which
secretly moved Allied troops to safety, placing themselves and their
families in great danger, were asked why they did it. Each person gave the
same answer: Because I was asked.
Because I was asked. Salespeople know that even though they may
carry the greatest product in the world and can present the best case for
that product, there comes a point at which they have to ask someone to
buy. I remember hemming and hawing back in high school wonderingwhether a certain girl would like to go out on a date. After much
indecision, my mother finally said to me, Gary, youll never know until
you ask. And certainly we in the church know that often first time visitors
come to the church not because of its great location, worship services, or
youth groupsthey come because they were asked!
I have become increasingly convinced that people can hear about a
church need in an announcement, read it in the bulletin or skim an article
in Pathways, but the most sure-fire way to recruit volunteers is to simply
ask them. Is there a committee position that needs filling? A short-termtask or occasion that begs for attention? Or, how about a service project or
volunteer opportunity from one of our mission organizations? I hope that
Trinitys church officers, committee chair people, staff and members may
realize that most will respond because I was asked.
Your pastor,
Gary
Happy 70th Wedding Anniversary to ...
Not only would one be hard-pressed to find a more gentle, dignified,
and faith-filled couple than Ed and Betty Lidell, one is unlikely to find
too many couples married for 70 years! What an achievement!
On Oct. 12, Ed and Betty celebrated their 70th Anniversary by
enjoying a family gathering at Sunsets in Woodbury. God Bless Them!

Christian Education Update:Learning Comes in Unexpected Ways
As much as taking an Adult Education class ...whether on Sunday morning or during our growing
Trinity ALIVE! program on Wednesdays ... is amajor contributor to learning and deepening faith, there are a multitude of ways we can learn moreabout our faith (and ourselves).
We emphasize classroom learning for kids and youthon Sundays and Wednesdays, but we also offer morehands-on experiences such as the Mitten Project lastChristmastime and shifts at Feed My StarvingChildren.
Being in a traditional setting is important. There is areason most educational institutions are set up the
way they are ... to provide an appropriateenvironment for learning. Churches are no different. But like the best academic schools, so too the churchmust offer opportunities that bring that learning tolife.
Every committee of the church, every program andevent the church puts on, is an opportunity to grow infaith. Not always directly, but the shared work andconcern for what we do brings us closer together infellowship, and it is that fellowship that often resultsin shared feelings and thoughts about faith. We learnby doing, but we learn best from one another.
As we think this month about the Spiritual Gifts withwhich God has blessed us, lets commit to findingsomething the church is doing that can use ourindividual gifts.
If you can sing ... join the choir. If you can use anabacus, help the money counters. If you can speak in
front of groups, find a faith-oriented subject andvolunteer to teach an Adult Ed class. If you love
kids and want to connect, teach Sunday School,Worship Care, or get involved with the youthprogram.
If you are more comfortable working in thebackground, theres always a need for kitchen helpon Wednesdays for Trinity ALIVE! Check out thevarious things Building & Grounds does. Organizingsupplies, closets, classrooms, and a host of thingsthat seem to happen on their own can all use theloving attention of someone gifted in organizing.
While there are plenty of times many of us wish
there really were Church Fairies to take care of thelittle things, sadly they are not real. Well, they arereal, its just that they are us.
Heres the key: focusing prayerfully on Gods Wordevery Sunday, and any time through educationalopportunities, will surely lead us to a place of deeperconviction and commitment. Part of that, when alsoprayerfully considered, draws us out of ourselves andour comfort zones to look for a way to bring the faithalive.
Gary is right ... we all have to remember to ask, toinvite others to help out, to participate in ourcommittees, to lead programs ... BUT, it is each of uswho is equally responsible for stepping up andletting it be known that the desire to participateexists.
Peace,Joe Pendal
WE NEED TO HEAR FROM YOU ...
If you have participated in Trinity ALIVE! tell us what you think of it. What can we do to make it even
better? If you have children in the program, what is their opinion?
If your children are participating in the Rotation Model Sunday School ... what do you and they think of
that program? Is the repetition of story through different modes working?
Call or email Joe Pendal: 651.738.0045 [email protected] Please do so before Dec. 1

The Almighty Sluggers softball
team finished the 2010 summer E
league softball season with arecord of 4 wins and 12 losses,
finishing a respectable 13 out of
16 teams.
As the picture shows, there was
some confusion about just what
sporting league the Sluggers
were playing in, a factor that
prevented them from earning
even greater respect this summer.
The Envelope Please ...
The 2010 MVP award went tothe versatile Greg VanderVeer,
whose versatility inspired the
more scientific teammates to
experiment with cloning during
their off hours.
The Silver Bat for hitting
prowess was awarded to Curtis
Crouse. Without him, the team
would have stranded far fewerrunners.
Alex Espe

playing with
a glove that
disintegrated

Steve Palmer was awarded
Rookie of the Year, overcoming
"sprinter's hamstring malaise"
that plagues rookies who attempt
to run way too fast to first base.
The "Terry Malloy -- I Coulda
Been Somebody" award went to
Gary Hanson, for pushing
hardest for a switch to the
Tuesday E league because it
SUPPOSEDLY had more church
teams.
Until Spring Training 2011!
Apologies to Garry Espe from

The Communications/Marketing committee created these colorful bookmarks to share with friends and
neighbors. We passed them out at the Woodbury Days parade line-up and would like you to pass them
out too! Please help us to spread the word about Trinity by sharing these bookmarks with your friends
and neighbors. They can help to spark a conversation and hopefully an invitation to visit. More
bookmarks are available on the Welcome table and in the church office.

As each has received a gift, use it
to serve one another, as goodstewards of God's varied grace. - 1
Peter 4:10
Talented people" are not only the
extraordinary achievers or the ones
with easily identifiable gifts, such as
musical or artistic ability.
Talents include being a good
listener, being able to organize
events, relating well to children or
teens, and being patient with theelderly, to name a few. Each one of
us was created with the capacity to
do for others in some way.
St. Teresa of Avila tells us that
Christ has no body now on earth
but yours, no hands but yours, no
feet but yours; therefore God
works through people to make the
world a better place.
Failing to use our time well and
apply the talents we have received is
that we neglect to carry out the work
of Jesus.
Jesus felt no need for an abundance
of items.therefore, donate excessclothing and volunteer at the
Christian Clothes Closet.
Jesus ate with all kinds of
people..share your culinary gifts
at a dinner party for friends one day,
and serve and share a meal with
families at Family Place another.
Jesus was not afraid to approach
lepers. . . have dinner with people at
Clares House, a home for those
with HIV/AIDS.
Tutor at Landfall; teach art or coach
underprivileged children at an after
school program. Make time for a
depressed friend, or listen to a
dementia patient tell you the same
story again and again.
The ways to share your talents are
as vast as the talents we each
possess.
We are one-of-a-kind creations of
God with unique contributions to
make in this world.
As Christians we recognize that our
gifts of time and talents are meant tobe cultivated and shared with others
with our family and friends, with
our parish community and with the
world. May we use our gifts
well . . .

November 22nd Program to Focus
on Teen Suicide
Communities, schools, churches, and families continue thestruggle with the repercussions of the tragic deaths by suicide of teens with seeming regularity. Minnesota has oneof the nations highest teen suicide rates.
There are no simple solutions to the frightening trend of teen suicide, says Joe Pendal, Trinitys director ofChristian Education. We cant even begin to hope to solve the problem easily let alone in one night ofconversation. But what we do hope a program like this will achieve is to identify one of the most importantprevention tools which adults being willing to talk to young people ... especially to listen to them.
On Monday, November 22 at 6:30 p.m., the monthly public meeting of the Faith-Based Health & WellnessNetwork will hold a program intended to provide insight and some guidance for adults with teens in their lives.Entitled,How to Talk to Your Teen About Suicide, this presentation will be led by Trinitys director of ChristianEducation Joe Pendal and Sarah Fuerst, a licensed psychologist working with the Youth Service Bureau.
Trinitys Service of Remembrance and HealingSunday, November 14 @ 7:00 p.m.
Presbyterians are a denomination that do not pray for those who have preceded us in death. We believe there is noreason to pray for them, since they are no longer suffering the pains of this world but are reveling in the presenceof God. We pray for those affected by the loss of family and friends; those whomost go on in the face of all manner of pain and suffering.
And ... we most definitely take time to remember those who are no longer withus. Thanking God for the gift of the lives that touched our own and made ourlives meaningful. Memories of those special individuals remain vividly in ourhearts ... and for many among us, the pain of such loss remains just as sharp.
On Sunday, November 14, at 7 pm, Trinity will gather to acknowledge the pain
of losing a loved one, as well as to bring together those who are suffering thepain of physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, or financial distress to receivestrength and comfort through prayer, music, and meditation.
All Trinity members, friends and family are encouraged to participate and receive God's gift of healing andwholeness. Following the service there will be a time of refreshment and fellowship.

Mission & Action Opportunities To Share Your Time & Talents
The Mitten Tree
During the Advent, Christmas and New Years
season we will be collecting hats, scarves, mittensand gloves for children at John A. Johnson
Achievement Plus Elementary School in St. Paul.
Please place your donations on and under the
Mitten Tree in Fellowship Hall.
Two-Way Giving
Preparing food, playing with children and helping a
tired adult are all simple things that we can do.
Lets make a difference in the lives of temporarily
homeless families. Join other Trinity folk in
spending an evening or an overnight at nearby
churches through Project Home. You will receive
the information and assistance needed to
experience the way in which God can bless you
through blessing others.
An Alternative to Alternative Christmas
Instead of sponsoring alternative Christmas giving
again this year, the Mission & Action Committeewants to focus on raising awareness and funds for
the ministry of our newly-sponsored missionary,
Rev. Jed Koball. Jed began his service as a mission
co-worker in January 2009 as a Facilitator for
International Partnerships through the Peru Joining
Hands network, Uniendo Manos Contra Pobreza
(Joining Hands Against Poverty).
According to the PC(USA) web site, Joining
Hands is a program of the Presbyterian Hunger
Program that fights the root causes of hunger by
sparking the formation of networks in developing
countries. These networks lead the struggle against
hunger at a local level while working with PC
(USA) presbyteries and congregations to address
global hunger issues.
The Peruvian JH network is comprised of secular
Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), such as
human-rights groups, church-related NGOs and
churches. Jeds responsibilities are to assist
Uniendo Manos in carrying out its core program
and developing their response to the main issues
that the network itself has identified as its primary
concerns. Jed acts as a link between PC(USA)
congregations and Uniendo Manos.
Here are the direct links to Jeds January and
September2010 newsletters.

AND YET ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE TIME & TALENT:
Trinitys Prayer Shawl Ministry
This is a ministry of love to care for members of Trinity who are ill or grieving.
Knitted or crocheted shawls and lap blankets are made to be given to men, women
and children who have a need for prayer and support as they face physical, emotional
or spiritual issues in their lives. The Prayer Shawl Ministry would love to have new
knitters or crocheters join us! If you would like to put your talents to use as part of this
Ministry, please contact Dee Lindblom (738-0045 [email protected]) for more information.

TIME AND TALENTS
Generally speaking, people who get involved in the life Trinity tend to get maximum benefit of what
Trinity has to offer. This includes worship, Trinity ALIVE!, church committees, social events, mission
opportunities, and other activities. Sometimes opportunity comes your way without effort, but more oftenyou need to seek it out. Get involved, and you will meet people, make friends, and enrich your spiritual
life. If you are interested, but not sure how to get involved, please contact your deacon and they will help
you out. -- From Your Board of Deacons
Did You Know Trinity Benefits From an Ad Hoc Social Committee?
The ad hoc (and zero budget) social committee was formed several years ago to foster community and
friendship in the congregation through a variety of social activities. Over the years, we have sponsored
theme potlucks, Twins games outings, game nights, after church dining clubs, and other events. Many
events are for the whole family, others are intended for adults. Currently, we sponsor a game night atTrinity on the second Saturday evening of each month. It has been so much fun that it shouldnt be free
(but it is). We have plans for a Movie Night (November 5th) and an alcohol-free New Years Eve party
(with dancing). We hope you will join us for some good times. If you would like to join the committee,
please contact Barb Freeman, Brad Wright, or Beth Hanson.

TLC Luncheon Serves Up Scary Good Time! The second Tuesday of each month, in this case it was October 12th, that broughtan early Halloween to the festivities. As always the company and conversation
was great fun, and equally wonderful was the food offered. As you can see fromthe pictures below, Fellowship Hall was decorated with gobblin-y stuff, while
some folks dressed up for the occasion from the sweet to the scary!
And Now a Word from Your Intern ...
Greetings to you from Kate
OBrien Soltau, the intern of the
2010/2011 academic year!!
I have met many of you through
out my first month here at
Trinity. It has been a wonderful
experience so far and I am very
impressed by how warm and
welcoming the Trinity
community is to interns.
I thought it would be fun to share
a little bit about me this month in
the newsletter. Most of my life
was spent in the home my
parents built in Bettendorf, Iowa,
and moved into three months
after my birth. I grew up and
was confirmed in Bettendorf
Presbyterian Church. I still call
it my home church and am under
the care of the Presbytery of East
Iowa for ordination of Minister
of the Word and Sacrament.
Three years ago, I moved to the
Twin Cites from Colorado to
attend Bethel Seminary. My
previous career was as aKindergarten teacher in Rifle,
Colorado. I loved the five years I
lived in Colorado because I love
to ski, hike and just be outside.
Even though I loved teaching and
skiing, I couldnt ignore the call
God has for me to pursue
seminary and ministry. So, I
packed up all my things and
made my way back to the
Midwest to begin this journey. I
just started my fourth and final
year of seminary and will finish
with a Master of Divinity degree
in May. This last summer my
life changed in the most exciting
way! On August 21st I married
Jeff Soltau at my familys cabin
north of Brainerd.
Heres the Sweet!
And what
could be
scarier than
Man-Witch &
Dr. Mullet?
Would you eat
food served by
these two?
