Landscape Rationale
Inside Out / Outside In
Strong connections from indoor to outside
spaces are made along King Edward Avenue, Ash
Street and the laneway. Indoor space transitions
to outdoor space with landscaped patios and
plantings that provide both privacy for residents
and green space to the public realm.
Animate Ash Street
The Ash Street frontage is animated with dense
plantings of vine maples, ferns and woodland
species, while the existing cedar and hemlock
trees are integrated into the landscape and
preserved. A trellis frames the secured
staircase, woodland planting, and seatwall at the
entrance way.
Defined Public & Private Landscapes
Street trees, planting and hedges lining King
Edward Avenue contribute to the public realm on
the street and demarcate the transition between
public and private space. Stairways and stoops
add eyes overlooking the lane. The use of fences
and gates at key areas on the perimeter of the
property further clarifies public and private
space. Planting strips with sufficient room for
trees and groundcovers soften the edges of the
laneway, but also delineate the lines between
public and private.
Integrated Amenity Experience
The Amenity Space is an integrated experience
featuring a common rooftop deck with an
outdoor dining area, children's play area,
outdoor seating, and bamboo planting. The large
existing trees on the northeast of the site
provide shelter to the deck. A tunnel slide on the
rooftop deck provides a playful alternative to the
stairs to access the amenity room below. The
wood roof top deck provides a "tree house"
space as it wraps around the existing hemlock
tree.
