Frank Bell
Frank Bell was born during the depression in Delco,NorthCarolina.HedescribesDelcoasawideplaceintheroad.Later,heandhisfamilymovedtoLewisberg,WestVirginia,wherehisfatherownedafurniturestoreandhismothercaredforFrankandhisfivesiblings. Starting in the seventh grade, Frank attended GreenbrierMilitarySchool.HecompletedhiseducationatVirginiaPolytechnicInstitutewherehemajoredinmechanicalengineering. After spending four years in the Navy, Frank cametoCaliforniawherehewashiredbyJPLasatestengineer.DuringhistimeatJPLFrankwasinvolvedinmanytestsofcomponentsforheat,coldandshaketodeterminetheirreadinesstobecomepartofaspacecraft’sattitudecontrolfortheguidancesystemsfortheLunarlandingandfortheMarsandUranusorbiterandothersignificantprograms.Inhismodest,unassumingway,Frankdescribed his efforts in setting up the tests as “pick andshovel”work.Inl997,after37years,FrankretiredfromJPL. Duringthistime,FrankmarriedhiswifeDeaninl964andhadtwochildren,JimandMartha.Deandiedinl997.Hisson,Jim,livesinTennessee.Franklosthisdaughter,Marthain2010. Frank’s passion for traveling has taken himtoChina,Japan,Australia,NewZealand,Alaska,MoselRiverinGermany,Normandy,Hiroshima,Peru,Canada,Egypt,NorthandSouthAfrica.OctoberwillfindhiminItaly.Hisloveforphotographyhashelpeddocumenthistravels.
