Twitter uses a similar format to Facebook, which makes it easy to customize a widget. The picture on the right shows exactly how your widget will look once the code has been pasted into your website’s HTML. It will also change once you make changes on the left.
-
¡ Google Analytics § http://www.google.com/analytics § Free service from Google that you can use to track visitors to your website
§ Need to install tracking code in order for the analytics to work This number identifies your
account and is unique for each website. The rest of the code is the same for everyone else.
-
§ Install the code by placing it before the closing body tag in your HTML at the bottom of the code
§ Once your code is installed, you will be able to get insights into your visitors: ▪ Usage: Visits, Page Views, Average Time on the Website ▪ Traffic Sources: direct, from referring sites, search engines ▪ Keywords: what words people type in to find your website ▪ Other Info: languages, screen resolution, operating systems, web browsers, location distribution, visitor loyalty
-
¡ Search Engine Optimization (SEO) § Increase traffic to your website using metatags § Appear in the head section of the HTML code ▪ Located between the and tags
§ Metatags determine how your website appears in search engine results (ie: Google, Yahoo, etc.)
§ Three types of metatags we will discuss: ▪ Title ▪ Description ▪ Keywords
-
¡ Title § Each page’s title should include your company’s name and should also reflect content found on the page ▪ For your ‘About Us’ section, your title could be Company Name – Recruiting and Consulting Experts | About Us
§ Place the title between title tags and in the head section. ▪ Company Name – Recruiting and Consulting Experts | About Us
-
¡ Description § Description of each page § Incorporate your branding, any slogans, etc. § Don’t be long-‐winded: limit to ~150 characters § Place after the closing title tag § Format: ▪ , where you place your description in the blank space
-
¡ Keywords § Important words that search engines use to identify your website
§ Can use Google Analytics to determine frequently used keywords
§ Make sure the keywords appear in the page text § Place after the description metatag § Format: ▪ , where you place your keywords in the blank space and each are separated by commas
-
Putting it all together: Company | Website Section
-
¡ Google Search Result Example
Name we placed between the title tags and
Description we placed in the metatag
The keywords we place in the metatag tell Google to show our website’s listing when a given keyword is entered for a search
-
¡ Successes § Incorporated social media into the website § Modernized website and added company branding ▪ Clients will not take you seriously if your website looks outdated and ancient – You indirectly date YOURSELF
§ Installed Google Analytics tracking code to find out about website visitors
§ Increased search engine rankings through metatags § Brought in new traffic from sources other than search engines (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
-
¡ Frustrations § Only so much information people will read a day, so you have to create and post engaging and interesting new content ▪ Don’t want to lose fans or followers due to lack of interest ▪ Have to keep creating new content at least once a week or people will move on
§ Gaining new fans or followers ▪ Not everyone uses Facebook/Twitter or is willing to become a follower of your company
-
