1. FullSpeedAhead
ForFFGStheyear2012provedtobeoneforshiftinggears.
In its fifth fullbusinessyear, theFoundation tightened its
organization, sharpened its aims, deepened its knowl-
edgeandstrengtheneditsbasis.Asa“think & do tank”,
thechallengeforusistofurtheritsknow-howinthefield
of sustainability,while -bywayof initiating, implement-
ingandfosteringprojects-makingsurethatknowledge
becomesactionandactionturnsintosustainabilitygain.
For Switzerland, 2012 was politically an intensive year.
Causewastheevershiftingalliancesaroundtheenergy
transition.AfterthethunderboltoftheSwissFederalCoun-
cil,announcingtheexitfromnuclearenergyinJune2011,
much of 2012 was taken up by preparing the ground,
both in building up know-howaswell as in forgingalli-
ancesbyconductingperson-to-personmeetingssoasto
ensurethattherightfactsbecomeknowntothepersons
whodecide.
On the international front, 2012 was rewarding in two
mainways.Firstly,NickBeglinger, inhisfunctionaspresi-
dent of the swisscleantechassociation,was elected to
officiallyparticipateasmemberof theSwissdelegation
totheRio+20conference(heldinJune)tocontributeas
GreenEconomyexpert.Secondly,thankstoFFGS,Zurich
became thecenterof Biomimicry this summerwith the
three-dayBiomimicryFinanceandInnovationSummitat
theendofAugust.Over100participantsfromalloverthe
world–mainlyUSandEurope–followedtheinvitationof
FFGStoexchangeknow-howandviewsinworkshopsand
conferences.
Internally, our organization went through some ma-
jor “overhaul and refitting” exercises. Our HR-basis was
strengthenedandsomekeyITprojectsrevised,updated
and re-launched. Moreover, the team left its “start-up”
headquartersinlatefalltotemporarilyco-residewithtwo
friendlyorganizations,kindlysharingtheirofficespaceuntil
ourlocalitieswerecompletedandreadytobeoccupied.
Themovewasscheduledforandeffectedbyearly2013.
AlltheseprojectsandchallengesputtheFoundationun-
derquitesomestraininmanyways.Thankstotheconfir-
mationof twoprominent Foundations for financial sup-
portmid-year,theteamsoonregainednewstrengthand,
withtheadditionalmeansgranted,FFGSwasabletoef-
fectthebadlyneededenlargementofitsHR-basissoas
tocontinueonitsroutetowardsitsgoalsofsustainability
onboththedomesticandinternationallevels.

2. ReinforcingtheTeam
Thenewfundingmid-yearenabledFFGStoreinforce its
teamwithtwonewanalystsandastrategist,particularly
to focuson theplentiful tasksposedby the swissclean-
techactivities; furthermore, itallowed for the internship
ofthreestudentstoassistinofficemanagementandse-
lectedprojects.
NickBeglingercontinuestakingexecutivechargeofstra-
tegicandgeneralmanagementdecisionsfortheFoun-
dation.HeissupportedbytheManagementCommittee
consisting of Franziska Barmettler, Christina Berger and
ChristianZeyer.Franziskaisinchargeofourpolicydivision
andperformsexcellently,inparticularonthepoliticallob-
byingfrontline.AsheadforallpoliticalissuesoftheFoun-
dation’sprojects,ofwhichswisscleantechisthemainone,
shemakessurethatourinternalactivity-planningblends
wellwiththepoliticalagenda,thusmaximizingtheinflu-
enceofswisscleantechinthepoliticalsphere.Sheworks
closelywithChristian,whojoinedtheFFGSteaminOcto-
ber.Heprovideswell-researchedinformationandspecif-
icstrategies.Christianhasbeenactiveforswisscleantech
since the association’s establishment in 2009. We take
pridetocounttheauthoroftheindispensableCleantech
EnergyModelnowamongourmanagementteammem-
bers.Christinais inchargeofthekeyprojectsCompass,
CleantechFrameworkanddevelopmentofthemember
servicesdivisionofswisscleantech.Mid-yearshetookover
moreoperationsfunctionstoensurethesmoothrunning
oftheorganization,especiallyinviewoftheofficemove,
recentmajorITdevelopmentsandnewrecruitments.Eve-
rysooftensheisassistedbyAnnaNyfeler,FlurinaMäder
and Corinne Egger, three excellent students, who help us
build up and maintain our database, prepare and sig-
nificantly assist in the execution of events, while taking
carethatevery“inbound-call” ispromptlyattendedto.
DarjaUnoldcontinuestoavailtousherskillsinproviding
well-designed publications – mainly for swisscleantech.
InOctober,wewereveryhappytowelcometwojunior
analystsinourteam.MartinaNovakhadchosenamas-
terthesis topiccoincidingwellwithpartoftheresearch
needsoftheFoundation:thecomparisonofthedifferent
energystudiesinSwitzerland,withtheaimofcompleting
apublicationforthebeginningof2013,whichistobring
the longawaitedclarity into the“study jungle”.Nicolas
Fries supports Christian in writing a background paper on
solarenergy,publishedinDecember2012.Nicolasisalso
engaged in organizing the focus groupsmeetings and
regularlywritesthenewsletterofswisscleantech.
The Foundation’s boardoftrustees, steering FFGS’ macro
decisions,isheadedbyWaltBeglinger.Wewouldliketo
thankhimandtheboardmembersDanielUrech,Adriel
CaroandNickBeglinger for theirvaluablecounseland
timeinvestment,aswellasfortheircontinuoussupport.
3. StrengtheningtheFinancialBasis
FFGS’asanoperationallyactivefoundationmainincome
isgeneratedbywayofthemandateswehold,mostim-
portantly from the business association swisscleantech,
whichtakesupsome80to90%ofourtimeinvested.The
association’s steadygrowthcontributed toamore solid
incomestreamin2012.InviewofFFGS’highcommitment
towards its various projects, the Foundation’s financial
means had to be reinforced. Mid-year, two prominent
foundations,OAKFoundation and MAVAFoundationpour
la nature, jointlypledgeda three-year financial support
for FFGS’ researchactivities. Their contributionsenabled
FFGStobuilduptheHR-basisandtotherebysignificantly
stepup itsactivities.Wewould liketoextendour thanks
andappreciation to the twoorganizations for their sup-
port,trust,andmostvaluedcontributions.

4. swisscleantech:Advancing theEnergyTournaround
In 2012, membership rose to over 300 companies. Fur-
thermore, some important new trade associations joined
theassociation’scouncil.Thisallowedustoincreasethe
weight of our political voice for the Green Economy,
which will be of immense importance for the crucial
monthsinenergypolicy-makingahead.Especiallyinthe
secondhalfof2012, theassociationgatheredover100
experts in focus groups to discuss solutions to systems-
problemssurroundingenergy,forinstancewithrespectto
mobilityandtobuildingtechnology,aswellastoprepare
inputforthelegislativeprocedures.
TheyearofRio+20wasalsoanexcellentopportunityto
demonstrate that swisscleantech is being recognized as
Switzerland’s main actor and heard expert on the Green
Economy.As amember of the Swiss delegation to the
RioconferenceinJune,NickBeglingerwasabletocon-
tributeinmanifoldmannertotheformationofecological
assessment and necessary legislative measures, which
needandshouldbetakenintoaccountbypolicy-mak-
ers.Healsohadtheoccasiontospreadthewordabout
the “swisscleantech policymakingmodel” and thus to
arouse the interestofmanydelegations in thewaywe
advancesustainabilityeffectivelyinthenationalandin-
ternationalpolicyarenas.Wearequiteproudtoholdthe
mandatetorun–toourknowledge–thecurrentlyonly
existing independent business association lobbying for
sustainablepolicies.
On the domestic side, the association has established it-
selfasoneofthemainprovidersofknow-howontheen-
ergytransition.swisscleantechhasbeencalleduponnu-
meroustimesbythemedia,institutionsandgovernment
entitiestoprovideinformation,assessmentsandevalua-
tions.Alongsidethemaintopic“energy”,swisscleantech
hasbroadeneditsscopebycommentingontopicssuch
as the relationship with the EU, the Gotthard tunnel and
biomimicry. It is theassociation’sgoal to furtherextend
the thematic scope topolicy topics,whichare of vital
importancetotheFoundationandforatrulysustainable
development,nationallyandworldwide.Wehavesetour
sights particularly on increasingly including “Social Re-
sponsibility”inourfuturemodelsforsustainabledevelop-
ment;a task, forwhichwe feel tobe ideallyequipped
duetothestrengthofFFGS’ecological,sociallyfairand
justtenor.

6. DeployingtheFramework with the Cleantech Compass
Based on the prototype of the web-based client, the
Foundation implemented the CleantechCompassforthe
GreenEconomy.Afterhavingconcludedacooperation
agreementwiththeCantonofBerneattheendof2011,
the tool was presented at the Cleantech City confer-
ence,organizedbytheCantonofBerneinMarch2012.
It isa verycomprehensiveanduser-friendly tool,which
allowscompaniesto register their respectiveCleantech
competencesonline. Thedevelopmentand implemen-
tationofthetoolwasamajorproject.Itsetsthebasisalso
for swisscleantechmembers to findeachotherwithout
havingtotakethedetourbywayoftheassociation’sop-
erationalteam.
swisscleantech is the ambassador for the compass, as
wellas–atthispointintime–itsmainclient.Nexttoswiss-
cleantech,thecompaniesoftheCantonofBernehave
beenproactivelyaddressed to signup. Thepartnership
withtheCantonprovidesfortheavailingofthetooltothe
relevantadministrativeauthorities,whichinturnemployit
toextendthetargetedservicestothecompanieswithin
theirjurisdiction.Furthermore,theCleantech.chnews Ser-
vice (see section 7) ismadeavailable toall signed up
participants.
Thestructuringofthetoolalsopermitsittobepulledinto
theclient’swebsite,ifsowanted.Thisaddedservicehas
notyetbeendemanded,butclearly thepossibility that
demandwillariseisthere.Thisextensionwillmakeforan
optionalpartofthepackageforfutureclients.
TheCompassthen,isacoredevelopmentrootinginthe
Cleantech Framework. The main target group for the
marketingoftheCompassistheeconomicpromotional
divisionofalloftheSwisscantons.Duetothecomplex-
ityandtimeconsummationofdevelopingandadvanc-
ing the tool, themarketingof theCompasshas in2012
notevolvedbeyondthementionedinitialtestruninthe
CantonofBerne.Itwillbeamajortaskin2013tomake
up Cleantech Compass packages, linked with the Clean-
technewsandtobringthisattractivetooltomarketfor
the cantons to strengthen their companies’ Cleantech
profile and to create more awareness for the Green
Economyingeneral.
5. AnEvolvingCleantechFramework
TheclassificationofCleantechactivities–theCleantech
Framework – is one of the most important intellectual
propertiesoftheFoundation.Itisbasedonthenationally
andinternationallyrecognizedindustryclassificationand
complemented by Cleantech qualities, encompassing
notonlytheprocessoftheeconomicactivityofacom-
pany(oranotherentity),butalsoaddressingtheresulting
products.As a thirddimension target,markets areallo-
catedsoastoallowcompanies,whicharemoreservice
focused,tohighlighttheirmainfieldofapplicationoftheir
product.ThegoaloftheCleantechFrameworkistomake
sustainableeconomicactivityvisibleandobservedacross
allindustrysectors,andthustoallowforhomologatedsta-
tisticalcoverage,matchingsolutionseekerswithprovid-
ers,andthusfinallyestablishingaqualifiedreliablebench-
markandassessmentbasisforoverallperformance.
In2012,weundertookafirstlinkingoftheFrameworkwith
thecatalogueofmeasures,as isdefinedbytheEnergy
CityAssociation. FFGSentered intopartnershipwith this
association,whichprovideslocaldecision-makerswitha
manualonhowtomaketheirmunicipalitymoresustaina-
ble.Thecooperationconsistsofmatchingthecatalogue
ofmeasureswithcompanies(viatheFFGSCodes)provid-
ing theknow-howto implement these.Additionally, the
partnership’sactivitieswereextendedtoincludetheas-
sociationoflocalcommunities(Gemeindeverband) and
the association of cities (Städteverband) as recipients
anddiffusersofthesupporttool.
TheFrameworkisdynamic,meaningthattheFFGSCodes
canbeextendedorspecifiedatanytimewhenneeded.
Firstchangeshavealreadybeenmadeinthefieldofen-
ergy–andmoreistocome,dependingonthefeedback
fromtheapplicationoftheframeworkinconnectionwith
theonlinetool–theCleantechCompass(seenextsection).

Footprint-Gründer ausgezeichnetBoston – Die Gründer des Global Footprint Network,Christoph Wackernagel undWilliam Rees, haben den Kenneth E. Boulding Award2012 der International Socie-ty for Ecological Economics(ISEE) gewonnen. Das Modelldes ökologischen Fussab-

Noch Luft bei der WasserkraftBern – Die Wasserkraft sollauch in Zukunft wesentlichzur Stromversorgung beitra-gen. Laut einer Studie desBundesamts für Energiebesteht bis 2050 ein Ausbau-potenziel von rund 1,5 Terra-wattstunden (TWh) pro Jahr.Unter optimierten Nutzungs-bedingungen kann die Was-serkraft um 3,2 TWh pro Jahrausgebaut werden. 2011 pro-duzierten die Wasserkraft-werke 33,8 TWh, das sindrund 54 Prozent der gesam-ten Erzeugung.
Strom statt LawinenBellwald – Photovoltaik-Anla-gen an einer Lawinenverbau-ung im Skigebiet von Bellwaldwerden ab Juli den erstenStrom ins lokale Stromnetz ein-
speisen. Die beiden Anlagenproduzieren laut der Energiere-gion Goms eine Gesamtleistungvon rund 22 Kilowattpeak. Mitdem Projekt wollen die Verant-wortlichen prüfen, ob dieseNutzung von Lawinenverbauun-gen lohnenswert ist. Das Projektwird von einer Studie begleitet.
Veloweg soll Energiever-brauch aufzeigenZürich – Ein Umweltvelowegsoll von Zürich nach Chur füh-ren. Laut den Initianten umSimone Hochstrasser sollenzehn Stationen jeweils ver-schiedene Facetten des eige-nen alltäglichen Energiever-brauchs erläutern. Der 127Kilometer lange Weg ist fami-lienfreundlich in drei Etappenuntergliedert. Das Projektwird unter anderem von derHeidiland Tourismus AGunterstützt.
Widerstand gegen CKW-SolarkraftwerkInwil – Die Stiftung Land-schaftsschutz Schweiz (SL)wehrt sich gegen das geplan-te grösste Solarkraftwerk derSchweiz in Inwil. Laut SL-Ge-schäftsleiter Raimund Rode-wald wäre es sinnvoller, dieEnergie über kleinere Dachan-lagen zu gewinnen. Die Cen-tralschweizerischen Kraftwer-ke sehen Vorteile bei der Frei-flächenanlage, weil so derStrom billiger produziert werden könne.
Hochhäuser werden Solar-kraftwerkZürich – Bei der architektoni-schen und energetischenSanierung der beiden Wohn-hochhäuser Sihlweid mit 17beziehungsweise 19 Oberge-schossen werden diese voll-ständig mit einer Solarhautummantelt. Die Ernst Schwei-zer Metallbau AG ist für dieEntwicklung und Konstruk-tion der Fassade verantwort-lich. Architektonisch betreutwird die Sanierung von derHarder Haas Partner AG.
Erste Wasserstoff-Tank-stelle der SchweizBrugg – Die PostAuto SchweizAG hat Ende Mai die ersteWasserstoff-Tankstelle derSchweiz in Betrieb genom-men. Die Anlage in Brugg versorgt fünf elektrisch betriebene Brennstoffzellen-autos. Der gasförmige Was-serstoff wird zum grössten Teilvor Ort von der Air Liquide-Tochter Carbagas produziert –und zwar ausschliesslich mitStrom aus erneuerbaren Quellen.
Alpmobil für nachhaltigenTourismusMünster – Der Verein Alp -mobil startet mit einemneuen Internet Auftritt undeinem neuen Konzept in diedritte Saison. Er hat sich voneinem Anbieter von Elektro-mobilität zu einer Plattformgewandelt, die touristischeAngebote entwickelt undverkauft. Damit werden lauteiner Mitteilung nachhaltigeMobilitätslösungen, span-nende Ausflüge und Ferien-angebote in nachhaltiggeführten Hotels kombiniert.
Swissgrid bürgt für GeothermieprojketBern – Die nationale Netz -gesellschaft Swissgrid hatdem von den St. GallerStadtwerken geplanten Geo-thermieprojekt eine Risikoab-sicherung mit Mitteln derKostendeckenden Einspeise-vergütung (KEV) zugesichert.Bereits Anfang Oktober 2011hatte Swissgrid einem Geo-thermieprojekt in Lavey-les-Bains die Absicherung desRisikos gewährt.

TheapplicationoftheEnergyCitymeasureswasalsoim-
plemented in the Compass website. On a tailor-made
sub-site,communityadministratorscanselecttheEnergy
City measure and see the companies, which provide
know-how to implement the measures. FFGS considers
thisamajorsuccessfortheFrameworkandtheCompass
as it shows that the “database” is more than just listing
information – it canalsomatch needs, provide several
outletsandbringaboutvisibility.
Itstill remainsawork-intensivetasktomakesurethatall
application profiles are properly executed. In 2013, pri-
oritywill have tobegiven toamoreproactive stance
towardsplacingtheCompasslicense,firstwiththeswiss-
cleantechmembers,andsecondlywith thecompanies
ofthecantons,withwhichwehaveenteredintoagree-
ments. Thiswill requireextrabudgetallocationand the
formationofaCompass“helpline”.
Themostimportantandwork-intensivepartisbehindus.
Theresultisunique.ItvisiblydemonstratesthatCleantech
canbefoundeverywhere.Thisprovidesaverysolidbasis
forthecontinuanceofourendeavorstospreadtheFFGS
Cleantechdefinition inall of Switzerland,and–weare
convinced–eventuallyworldwide.
7. ExpandingandIntegrating theCleantechInformationService
Cleantech.ch, the Foundation’s joint venture with the
pressagencyCaféEurope,alsounderwentasignificant
furtherdevelopment in2012. Thewebsitewassuccess-
fully upgraded. Interaction with Cleantech aficionados
multiplied. FFGS mainly participates in the cost of the
technicalinfrastructure.Itmakesitschannelsavailableto
fosteringthediffusionofthenewsservice.
Besides theexcellenteditorialworkof theCaféEurope
journalist team, some technical additions have been
madepossibleby the jointventurewithFFGStospread
the news even further. Organizations can now choose
tohavecustom-selectedCleantech.chnewsintegrated
intotheirownwebsite.FFGSscheduledtoimplementthis
featureintoitsownwebsiteinJanuary2013.Liechtenstein
Innovation isoneof theotherearlyusersof this system,
and,nodoubt,manymorearetofollow.
Thenewsservice,withitsnewslettercapacity,tailoredto
specifictopics,withorwithoutgeographicalfocus, indi-
vidualized content allocation and integration on web-
sites, formsan integralpartofmarketingtheCleantech
Compasspackage.Thiscomprehensivepackageallows
ahighvisibilityofCleantechcompaniesandnews, the
raisingofawarenessandinterest,aswellasvaluablein-
formationforthecantonsonthecompaniesintheircon-
stituencies – all at a relatively lowcost to thepartners.

Inthepastyears,importantworkhasbeenundertakenin
establishingaCleantechdatabasewhichallowedtoef-
ficientlymanagealloftheFoundation’scontacts,event
participationsandconnectionswithotherentities.Butun-
fortunately, the Java-Application system ran into signifi-
cant limitations in itsperformance:mainlyspeed,which
hasworsenedbecauseofthelackingaccesstoaglass-
fiberconnection;alsostabilitydeteriorated.Additionally,
thepossibilityofimplementingtheCleantechFramework
asitsmainunderlyingstructureisratherlimited.
Sinceswisscleantech,asitsmainuser,experiencedever-
increasingcomplexityandvolume,thedecisionwastak-
enbyFFGSto invest intoare-designofthedatabase in
the summerof2012, following intensiveexploration talks
with several databaseproviders. Themaincriteriawere
definedas:usability,web-based,integrationandlaterac-
tivemanagementoftheframeworkwiththeCRM,data-
baseinterfacetothecompassandtotheswisscleantech
websites,totheCleantechinformationsystem,possibility
ofexpanding/modifyingdatabasefieldsrelativelyeasily.
Insteadof opting for a fully tailor-made solution,which
would have substantially surpassed the Foundation’s fi-
nancialmeans,weoptedfora“semi-out-of-the-box”so-
lution; acquiring somebasic pre-programmedmodules
andaddingothers tailored to thespecificneedsof the
Foundation. Theseweremainlydrivenby the specifica-
tions required for running theorganizational sideof the
swisscleantechassociation.
Themostsuccessful tenderwashanded inbythecom-
panyintegranova,withwhichwebegantoworkclosely
towards full implementationof thenewdatabase.Next
tobeingabletofulfilltheexigentrequirements,thisdata-
basecanalsobemadeavailabletoallkindsofotheren-
tities,whowishtolicenseoursystem(withorwithoutthe
CleantechFrameworkasclassificationtoolofallentries),
forinstancetoorganizationssuchasCleantechclusters,
orCantons,aswellastoentitiesofentirelyunconnected
domains.Thisrepresentsapotentialforsignificantfuture
incomefortheFoundation.
Thenewsystemwill,therefore,notonlyallowFFGStocar-
ryoutitsworkefficiently,especiallyinconnectionwithits
swisscleantechmandate,butrepresentsalsoasignificant
strategicinvestmenteventuallytostrengthenotherenti-
tieswithagreatframework,offeringconnectivityandfit-
tingtools.

Potenzial der Bionik ausloten. Denn die spiele, so die Veranstalter, eine zentrale Rolle – zum Beispiel für die Entwicklung von Ressourcen schonenden Produkten.

Der Chef eines Harems hat bei den Blutbrustpavianen nur ein Mittel, um sich die Treue seiner Weib-chen zu si-chern: Zuwen-dung. So laust der Boss jedes seiner bis zu zwölf Weib-chen regelmässig. Vernachläs-sigt er eine der Damen, sucht die sich einen einfühlsameren Chef. ZÜRICH. Muschelschalen be-stehen hauptsächlich aus Kalk. Die Schicht aus Perlmutter zum Beispiel zu 95 Prozent. Obwohl Kalk an sich ein brüchiges Material ist, sind Muschelscha-len sehr stabil. Grund: Hier liegt der Kalk in Form von klei-nen Plättchen vor, die nach einem ganz bestimmten Muster angeordnet sind.

Dach wie Seerosenblatt Der Crystal Palace in London, der für die Weltausstellung 1851 ge-baut wurde, verdankt die Konst-ruktion seines Daches dem Blatt der Riesenseerose. Deren nur we-nige Millimeter dünnes Blatt erhält seine aussergewöhnliche Stabilität durch ein Gitterwerk auf der Unterseite. Der Botaniker und Architekt Joseph Paxton kopierte diese Bauweise für das Glasdach.
ZÜRICH. Mit trockener Badehose aus dem Wasser steigen könnte künftig möglich sein – dank einer Beschichtung aus Silikon.
Die südamerikanische Was-serjagdspinne fängt ihre Beu-te unter Wasser. Krabbelt sie wieder an Land, ist sie völlig trocken. Ihr Trick: Die Spin-nenhaut ist mit unzähligen kleinsten Borsten ausgestattet, zwischen denen sich Luft an-lagert. Diese Luftschicht hält das Tier trocken.
Nach diesem Prinzip haben Forscher um den Chemiker Ste-fan Seeger von der Uni Zürich nun eine Beschichtung für Tex-
tilien entwickelt: «Die wasser-abweisende Wirkung ist hervor-ragend und das Verfahren sehr billig.» Die Textilien werden mit Siliziumverbindungen be-dampft. Dabei bilden sich kleinste Silikonfäden, welche die gleiche Wirkung haben wie die Borsten der Spinne: Tau-chen die Forscher ein behan-deltes Stück Stoff ins Wasser, ziehen sie es trocken wieder he-raus.

omyfindswaystoapplythebasicpremisesofbiomimicry
–theimitationofnature’sprinciples–itcouldgrowand
prevailwithoutharmingtheenvironment.InAugust2012,
FFGS took the lead in establishing the BiomimicryFinance
and InnovationSummit as the European counterpart to
the US Biomimicry Conference held bi-annually in San
Diego, USA. The Summit featureda range ofworkshop
sessionsandconferences that focusedonthe topicsof
how toenhanceCleantech innovationwithbiomimicry
principles,andwhatfinancialtoolsareatdisposaltoac-
complishthis.
With its broad network to Swiss companies and its stra-
tegic international partnerships, FFGS succeeded to be-
come host tomore than 100 participants fromall over
Europe,NorthAmericaandotherpartsof theworld. To
learnandtoexchangeknow-howandviewsonapplying
biomimicryinpracticewasgoalforallofourguests.The
Summit was organized in cooperation with swissclean-
tech, the Zurich Zoo, the San Diego Zoo, the organization
Biomimicry3.8, as well as the acclaimed WyssInstituteat
HarvardUniversity.Itwasalsothankstothefinancialsup-
portof the latter that theconferencecouldbecarried
outsosuccessfully.
Bringing the Biomimicry concept to business and the
mainstream was the key objective of the media work
aroundtheSummit.Apressconference,heldbyitspart-
ner swisscleantech in conjunction with the Zurich Zoo, at-
tractedconsiderableattentionandevenmadeitintothe
“20Minuten”freenewspaper.Plansaretorepeatthisfirst
successfuleditionoftheSummitagainin2014inZurich.

Nick Beglinger hat Grosses vor. Auf dem brachliegenden Militärflug-platz in Dübendorf ZH will er der Welt beweisen: Was das arabische
Emirat Abu Dhabi kann, können wir bes-ser: eine neue Öko-Stadt hochziehen, die ohne Autos und ohne Ölheizungen aus-kommt. Die Energie holen wir gratis von der Sonne oder aus der Hitze des Erd-innerns. «Null Kohlendioxid-Ausstoss» lautet das erste Ziel, «null Müll» das zwei-te. Und falls trotzdem ein paar Kilo Abfall entstehen oder einige benzinbetriebene Lieferwagen in Neu-Dübendorf vorfahren sollten? Dann wird Nick Beglinger deswe-gen nicht verzweifeln. Entscheidend ist die richtige Richtung, die saubere Technik.
«Cleantech Innovationspark Dübendorf» nennt er seine Idee.
In der Presse kursiert ein kürzerer Titel, der besser trifft: «Abu Dübi».
Wer ist Nick Beglinger? Ein Pionier? Ein Fantast, der dem Grössenwahn ver-fallen ist? Der 39-jährige Ökonom lacht. «Gigantismus» werde ihm oft vorgewor-fen. Er sei Partner der Firma Maxmakers. Maxmakers ist ein Schweizer Baubera-tungsunternehmen, aktiv in Entwick-lungsländern. Die Hälfte der Kunden sind Regierungen, die andere Hälfte Investo-ren. «Der klassische Fall ist der Ölscheich, der viel Geld und ein Stück Land hat, aber nicht wirklich weiss, was er damit anstel-len will.» Das ist kein Klischee, sondern
Stadt von morgen: Masdar City in Abu Dhabi soll zum Vorbild nachhaltigen Wirtschaftens werden.
Alle Energie für null Energie
In Abu Dhabi wird eine Ökostadt aus der Wüste gestampft. Nick Beglinger verfolgt dasselbe Ziel auf dem

Was ist Null-Energie? Werden Kohle, Öl, Erdgas oder andere fossile Brennstoffe ver-brannt, entsteht Kohlendioxid (CO2), das oft «Treibhausgas» genannt wird, weil es die Klimaerwärmung verursacht. Um den drohenden Klimakollaps zu verhindern, muss die Energie künftig aus andern, er-neuerbaren Quellen stammen: von der Sonne, dem Wasser, dem Wind oder aus der Erde (Geothermik). Alle diese Verfahren sind erfunden, haben sich aber kommerziell noch nicht richtig durchgesetzt. Das arabische Wort «Masdar» übrigens heisst auf Deutsch «Quelle».

In der Folge schiessen mitten aus der Wüste gi-gantische Siedlungen empor, gebaut im amerikanischen Stil «mit dünnen Wänd-chen und dünnen Fenstern», sodass wir aus der Ferne erkennen: Die Araber, reich geworden dank dem Öl unter der Erde, verheizen das Öl in die Luft.
Null Müll, null EnergieDas aber ist nicht im Sinn des Nick Beglin-ger. In der Schweiz sitzt er im Vorstand von Minergie, einem Verein, der für effi-ziente Isolationen kämpft. 14 000 Gebäude erfüllen bereits den strengen Minergie-Standard. Zum Beispiel die beiden Sun-rise-Türme in Zürich-Oerlikon, entwickelt
vom Atelier WW. Zu diesen Zürcher Star-architekten ging Nick Beglinger und fragte nach einem «Null-Energie-Haus fürs Wüs-tenklima». Wobei die Zahl «null» auf eine falsche Fährte lockt: Energie wird weiter verbraucht, aber ausschliesslich aus er-neuerbaren Quellen. Technisch funktio-niert das ökologische Wüstenhaus wie eine umgekehrte Solaranlage im Winter-land: Das Licht der Sonne wird in elek-trischen Strom verwandelt, mit diesem Strom wird Wasser gekühlt, das zur Ab-temperierung der Innenräume benutzt wird. Und gegen aussen muss ein Wüsten-haus natürlich perfekt isoliert sein.
So geschah es im Jahre 2005, dass Nick Beglinger im Namen der damals unbekann-
ten Firma Maxmakers aus der Schweiz in Abu Dhabi zur Beraterin der Regierung avancierte, die eine neue Stadt – «Masdar City» – aus der Wüste stampft, in der 40 000 Einwohner und 50 000 Pendler null Energie und null Müll produzieren sollen, so lautet zumindest das ehrgeizige Ziel. Seite an Seite mit den obersten Chefs von Masdar reiste Nick Beglinger zu Weltkon-zernen, die sich zum nachhaltigen Wirt-schaften bekennen. Vom Schweizer Ze-mentkonzern Holcim über Siemens bis zu Google in Kalifornien. Alle hörten aufmerk-sam zu. Aber als der Zürcher Beglinger sie aufforderte, sie sollten nach Masdar kom-men, lachten sie. Das könne er vergessen. Das Wichtigste für Google sind gut aus-

westillconsidertheClubtobeavehicle,whichpoten-
tiallycouldbecomeanimportantfactorinintegratingin-
terestedindividualpersonalities,notbackedbyanycom-
mercialenterprise, in theworkof theassociation. FFGS,
therefore,planstore-launchtheClubinthecourseofthe
secondhalfof2013.
11.3SwissVillageAbuDhabi
Due to severalgrave issueswith respect to theMasdar
projectand the lackof concertedcooperationby the
Swissembassy,FFGSsawnootherwaythantodecideto
nolongerpursuethisproject.Boththeinconsistentman-
agementoftheMasdarprojectonthesideofAbuDhabi,
aswellastheuncoordinatedactionsbytheSwissExport
Platform(Osec)andaffiliatedstate-sponsoredSwissac-
tors, the Foundation decided to stop the project and to
dissolvetheSwissVillageAbuDhabiAssociation.Wevery
much regret the disappointing outcomeof this truly vi-
sionaryundertakingandextendoursincerethanksforthe
commitment to the companies,who carried it forward
togetherwithusfromtheverybeginning
Inthesecondhalfoftheyear,tworoadshowsaboutthe
SprinterBuildingtookplaceinZurichandGeneva.Anum-
berofSwisscompaniesshowedaninterestinmovinginto
theSprinterBuilding.
Unfortunately,Osec’ssupportfortheproject,whichhad
beentakenupin2010,couldnotbedevelopedfurther
withthe“CleantechSwitzerland”exportplatform.Tothe
astonishmentofSwissVillageandFFGS,“CleantechSwit-
zerland”evenbegantoholddiscussionswithMasdar in
paralleltotheSwissVillageAbuDhabiAssociation.Rather
thanjoiningforcestodealwiththeslow-movingproject
development on Masdar’s part, Switzerland gave an
appearanceofbeingindecisiveanduncoordinated.As
aresultFFGSreduceditsprojectactivitiessharplyandis
waiting-hoping-forpositiveprojectdevelopmentand
firmstepsfromtheMasdarprojectmanagementandthe
relevantSwisspartiesinvolved.
11.ConsolidatingFurtherProjects
Withitshighpriorityprojectsinfullswing,2012leftlimited
resourcestoadvanceinanysignificantmannertheother
projectsinFFGS’portfolio.Below,youmayfindabriefup-
dateonsomeofthose,whichcurrentlyalsoarepartof
FFGS,butforvariousreasons–thoughtoa largeextent
forlackofneededresources–areonholdorhavebeen
relegatedtoalowerprioritylevel.
11.1CleantechInnovationParks
TheaimofCleantechInnovationParksistodemonstrate
onamediumscalehowcomprehensiveCleantechsolu-
tionscanbesuccessfullyapplied.Withthetotal revision
ofthefederal lawonthepromotionofresearchandin-
novation,FFGSsawanopportunitytoadvancetherec-
ognitionofsuchaparkhavingtohaveaCleantechfo-
cusinordertofurtherstrengthentheCleantechprofileof
Switzerlandandtoadvancethepracticalapplicationof
innovativeCleantechsolutions.
By September 2012,both legislativechambers hadap-
provedthenewlaw.Themainopenquestionremaining
iswhetheroneorseverallocationsshouldbeestablished.
WithNickBeglingerbeingaboardmemberof thenew
association“Swiss InnovationPark”,whichaims tocarry
outtheimplementationofthenewpark,FFGSisdirectly
involved in theup-comingdecisionsThemain interest is
still to transform the formermilitaryairfield “Dübendorf”
intoaCleantechsite–asFFGS’studysuggestedalready
in 2007. Themany known political hurdles to be taken
have not changed our original assessment of the truly
uniquesuitabilityoftheDübendorfsiteforaninnovation
parkatZurich’sdoorstepsandonlyminutesfromthecity’s
internationalairport.
11.2CleantechVisionaryClub
FFGS created this club togivealso individualsthepossi-
bilityofdirectlysupportingswisscleantech’sactivitiesand
theactiveacquisitionofnewclubmembershad tobe
pausedduetolimitedtimeresources.Theacquisitionof
newcompaniesfortheassociationwasdeemedamore

12.GoingStrong
Looking back, the year 2012was full of challenges, in-
ternally as well as externally, and was a key year on
streamlining and strengthening the Foundation’s activi-
ties.Wewereabletoreapinthebenefits,forwhichwe
hadworkedhardintheyearsbefore,suchasthealready
wideacceptanceofourexpertiseon theGreenEcon-
omyinSwitzerland,aswellasourknow-howandfurther
developmentofstudiesinsignificantareasoftheenergy
transition.
Our track recordalsoallowedus togain thesupportof
twomajordonors, theMAVAandOakFoundations.We
are very grateful for their valuable grant contributions.
Theyallowedustoshiftupgearsandgrowsignificantlyin
2012.Theirendowmentallowedustostepupouractivi-
tiesandmakeanimpactfortheadvancementofsustain-
abilityintangibleways.
Wewill continue todrive the synergiesamongourma-
jor projects, swisscleantech, the Cleantech Framework,
CompassandCleantechNewsServicetoadvancesus-
tainabilityintheeconomy.
Muchremainstobedone.Biomimicrygivesusthechance
toplunge intothetopicof resourceefficiencyanduse,
and we hope to expand our knowledge on this important
topic,jointlywithourpartner“TheFootprintNetwork”.This
partnershipisinstrumentaltofurtherthisissueontheSwiss
politicalagendainthenearfuture.
Thetimeis right:Switzerlandisdebatingonreforming its
fiscalsystemtowardsanecologicaltax,andpoliticalpar-
tiesarelaunchinginitiativesfortheGreenEconomy.The
word isalsoout that theSwissenergydepartment(BFE)
willopenupthemarketfortendersofanewalternative
energyagency,nexttotheexistingEnAW,whichsupports
companiesinachievingareductionoftheirenergycon-
sumption.Wearecurrentlysettinguptheconceptforan
FFGSsponsoredCleantechAgency,whichwilldealwith
resourceefficiencyaswell.
Movingaheadto2013,weareconvincedthatourpro-
jects,partnersandteamwillcontinuetotangiblycontrib-
utetoanationalandglobaldevelopmentofsustainability.
