Section 1 Introduction
Polypropylene is an exceedingly versatile polymer, made from a widely available, low cost feedstock -
propylene – through a relatively straightforward and inexpensive process. Polypropylene itself has good
mechanical properties, chemical resistance, accepts fillers and selected other additives very well, and is
easy to fabricate by a variety of methods. A key attribute is its flexural strength; it can be flexed (bent)
without breaking. It is strong and has the lowest density of the commodity thermoplastics. Due to its
broad cost-performance profile, polypropylene has replaced other plastics as well as traditional materials.
The major use of polypropylene is in the injection molding sector which includes automotive, packaging,
electrical/electronic and appliance applications. In all these sectors, the development trend is moving
towards high performance and lighter materials so as to lower carbon dioxide emissions, fuel
consumption (automotive) and reduce overall manufacturing costs; frequently making polypropylene the
material of choice. The packaging sector is the largest consumer of polypropylene, with the resin being
used in films and rigid packaging applications such as crates, pallets, closures/caps. The high
temperature resistance for polypropylene makes it suitable for disposable food packaging applications. In
the electrical and appliances sector, polypropylene offers advantages such as integral mechanical
performance, good chemical resistance, and good processability compared to other competing resins.
Modified polypropylene resins can be substituted for ABS, HIPS for selected electronic and electrical
appliance parts. However, the electrical/electronic and appliances sector is growing slowly, with the
demand coming mainly from penetration into developing regions. Fiber is also an important application of
polypropylene, and is used mainly in carpets and non-woven products where polypropylene provides
water resistance and shrinkage resistance.
In addition to the above noted attributes, it is also quite easy to incorporate small amounts of other
comonomers, such as ethylene, to yield polypropylene copolymers with different and commercially
desirable properties. Polypropylene copolymers can be split into two types- impact (or block) copolymers
and random copolymers. Ethylene is typically the copolymer used, although co- and ter-polymers with
butene-1 are produced commercially. Impact copolymers are polymer chains with regular “blocks” of
ethylene and propylene; ethylene content is typically in the range of 8 to10 percent (by weight). At
relatively high levels of ethylene (over 20 to 25 percent ethylene), the product exhibits elastomeric
properties and is referred to as a thermoplastic olefin (TPO) or thermoplastic elastomer (TPE). Random
copolymers are so called because the ethylene comonomer is randomly distributed throughout the
polymer chain. For random copolymers, the ethylene content is typically 3 to 5 percent with some grades
up to 7 percent. Of these two broad categories of polypropylene copolymers, the impact copolymer
polypropylenes find more commercial utility than random copolymers as the combination of flexural
modulus (resistance to deformation) and Izod impact improves the performance profile of the resulting
copolymer, such that these materials find utility in many cost-sensitive applications, especially durable
goods.

A50801.010.01
Figure 1.1 Properties of Various Polypropylenes
Demand for both types of copolymers is growing slightly more rapidly than homopolymer polypropylene.
Random copolymers are growing in niche markets while impact copolymers are growing in large volume,
high strength durable end-uses. Homopolymer polypropylene is principally consumed in the packaging
sector in film grades.
Interestingly, the consumption of impact copolymer polypropylene, as a percent of total polypropylene
consumption, varies widely around the world. Japan consumes the largest proportion of copolymer
polypropylene – just less than 50 percent of its polypropylene demand is for impact copolymers. In the
United States, impact copolymer polypropylene accounts for about 30 percent of demand. In other, less
developed regions, demand for impact copolymer is less than 20 percent of the polypropylene market.
Globally, around 30 percent of the polypropylene market is supplied by copolymers, of which about 25
percent is for impact copolymers, and about 5-6 percent is for random copolymers.
The purpose of this study is to characterize the global impact copolymer polypropylene business and
provide context regarding the homopolymer and random copolymer segments. This will be accomplished
by extensive market research conducted by Nexant experts in our network of regional offices. The study
is designed to answer a number of critical questions regarding the impact copolymer market:
What is the demand for impact copolymers globally, regionally, as well as in key consuming
countries?
Can strong growth in impact copolymer demand be sustained? What growth rate is forecast, and
how does that compare to homopolymer and random polypropylene?
What are the market drivers behind the ongoing growth of impact copolymer
polypropylene?

What are the key end-market segments for impact copolymer polypropylenes?
Will emerging applications for impact copolymer polypropylenes be sufficient to drive
growth?
What are the costs to produce impact, random and homopolymer polypropylene? What are the
key cost drivers for these materials?
The study will be of benefit to existing participants in the polypropylene industry, as well as to firms
considering market entry or firms presently making homopolymer/random copolymers that might be
thinking about expanding their product portfolio to include impact copolymers. Nexant is planning on
initiating this study in Quarter 3 2015, with completion targeted for Quarter 4 2015.

Section 4 Methodology
Nexant is proposing to develop the global analysis as discussed in the scope through an intensive, global
market research effort, utilizing Nexant’s regional experts based in our numerous offices around the
world. The information will be collected based on primary market research mainly through telephone
interviews, although face-to-face contacts will also be performed with key participants. This primary
research will be augmented with information already in our databases as well as through trade
information and secondary sources (i.e. conference proceedings) as available.
Information on the broader polypropylene market will be taken from Nexant’s PolyOlefin Planning Service
(POPS). This ongoing program has profiled polypropylene markets and technology for over a decade.
The broader polypropylene market analysis contained in POPS relies on projections for polypropylene
supply/demand/trade developed using Nexant’s proprietary NexantThinkingTM
Petrochemical Simulator.
The Petrochemical Simulator is the proprietary simulation model used to generate the analysis and
forecasts as contained in many of our ongoing programs. The simulation model is an experience-based
database running commodity petrochemical business logic algorithms to produce multi-scenario
simulations of the global industry. The integrated Petrochemical Simulator simultaneously develops
forecasts of regional consumption, production, imports, exports and inventory changes for all commodity
petrochemicals in all countries/regions as shown in Figure 4.1.
The Petrochemical Simulator delivers step change improvements in market forecasting and
business/corporate planning, while reducing the resources and time required to evaluate multiple
hypotheses and scenarios.
