Message from the Chief Executive Officer
John A. R. Salvador
Dear PFSA Fraternal Sisters and Brothers:
CALL TO ACTION!!!
I am pleased to inform you that the PFSA Business Board of Directors has approved to establish a Youth
Advisory Committee of members who are at least 25 years of age or older. The purpose of the Committee is to
assist the Youth Redevelopment Program Committee to restructure the Youth Leaders (Officers) program of
our Society. Also, the Youth Advisory Committee will remain intact upon implementation of the new youth
program to support and assist the Youth Leaders in all their endeavors and activities. If you are interested to
serve as a member of the Youth Advisory Committee please contact me at your earliest convenience either via
email [email protected], or by calling my direct office telephone (510) 877–8036 or via cell phone
(209) 401-3209. As a Committee member it will require your firm commitment, time and devotion to our
Youth. Our goal is to create an exciting youth program, with the input of ideas and suggestions from our Youth
Members, to increase participation of our youth members who are the future leaders of PFSA. The target time
to implement the new program is by our Convention in July of 2017.
Discounts on thousands of items are awaiting you and it is free to PFSA Members.
You can save thousands of dollars by signing up thru the Members Rewards Program
(PerkSpot) on our Website. It only takes a few moments of your time and an email
address to sign up. Sign up today and start receiving great discounts!
Stay CONNECTED with PFSA through our Website, Facebook page and Social Media, by providing us with
your current email address, as so we can keep you up to date on all social events and fraternal activities.
Enjoy this edition of the monthly newsletter and Keep Connected with PFSA.
My sincerest appreciation is extended to all PFSA members for your continued volunteer community service
hours and dedication to “Making a Difference”. Thank you!!!

Council 51 celebrated Immigrant Week with presentations of
the early Portuguese immigrants. The presenters were
members: PFSA Past Supreme President, Alyce Cervantes;
and author, Olivia Andrade-Lage. The presentations spot-
lighted three special books: “Portuguese Pioneers of the Sac-
ramento Area” by Lionel Holmes; “The Egg in the Water
Glass, A Journey of a Lifetime” by Olivia Andrade-Lage; and
“Stories Grandma Never Told, Portuguese Women in Cali-
fornia” by Sue Fagalde Lick.
Supreme President, Alyce Cervantes,
utilized an excerpt from “Portuguese Pio-
neers of the Sacramento Area” to highlight
the life and accomplishments of PFSA (2
times) Past Supreme President, Antonio
Jardim Pinto. Mr. Pinto was an immigrant
from the island of Madeira at the age of
14 and forged a life in America based on hard work and a
love of family and Portuguese culture and traditions.
He was very dedicated to the fraternal societies and estab-
lished a dynasty of Supreme Presidents in the APUMEC.
Not only was he Supreme President twice but both his
daughters: Rita Macias and Alyce Cervantes, also served as
Supreme Presidents.
Author, Olivia Lage, began her presentation by sharing a
large photograph of her father’s ranch in the Hanford and
Lemoore area of California taken in 1915. The picture set
the stage for her discussion of the strug-
gles of her parents and larger family in
leaving the Azores and coming to America
to make their way. Her father, Jose Caeta-
no Andrada, was born in the village of
Fontinhas, Terceira and her mother, Emilia
Coelho de Souza, from the village of Sao
Bento, Terceira. Olivia shared stories of
both her parents, her family and her experiences of being
Portuguese in California during the early part of the 20th cen-
tury.
Both presenters shared stories from the book “Stories Grand-
ma Never Told” and focused on the ideas shared by author
Lick. The presentations were very effective in focusing the
attendees on the Portuguese Immigrant story. We all left the
meeting feeling uplifted and realizing that
these stories must continue to be shared and
passed on, and that we must never forget
the struggles of those who came before us
to forge the way for the Portuguese in Cali-
fornia.
Respectfully submitted,
Jackie Hood, Council 51 President

Message from your Supreme President, Linda J. Mateus
“April Showers bring May flowers”, so the saying goes, but; so it has been with El Nino, showers and heavy rains throughout my travels! Parts of our state need more rain, but if you travel North, beware of delays due to one lane closures with hill slides. Since our last Newsletter, I have attended all scheduled Fraternal Council Events for the following Fraternal Councils: San Leandro #24, Salinas #90, San Diego #1, Merced #20, Mountain View #14, San Jose #44, Santa Cruz #77, Half Moon Bay #35, Santa Clara #27, and finishing March before Easter Week, with Newark #16. Each and every one of our Fraternal Coun-cils have extended fraternal friendship to all who attend and participate in these wonderful events in so many different colorful ways. Just a few examples: Council #24, San Leandro had a beautiful “Valentines Event”, with a red napkin folded in a beautiful “ROSE”. Then again, those beautiful “Rose” folded napkins appeared at Fraternal Council #44 San Jose. And the cakes, all so considerately in-scribed. Merced Council #20 rented a jumpy house for the children to have as an activity while we adults continued on with the program of the afternoon. Mountain View #14 hosted their event with a display for Immigrant Week, very well presented. Santa Clara #27 had a fantastic fun raffle for St. Jude. Awesome job, and thank you for supporting the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. There were an impressive amount of children at our Newark #16 annual event, all who shared in the cake cutting ritu-al. Precious! Newark had a 50/50 raffle for their scholarship, which then the winner donated back, so the council donated that half to St. Jude. Thank you for your added contribution, Newark! I also attend-ed our Immigrant Week Book Presentation in San Leandro, by co-author Joao Bendito. Very nice even-ing and good attendance considering the weather! ALL councils deserve a huge Thank You for partici-pation and the generous gifting presented for my Supreme President’s Charity. You have been generous and I commend all of your Officers and Members for their continued support and dedication to PFSA. Thank you for the new memberships, thank you for your coming together to support this term in host-ing combined annual events and all the charity work your members do within your communities. I want to share the moments from each of our fantastic events, along with our STAR AWARD recipients (our Fraternal Council Secretaries) so please see the photo’s attached. Let’s carry on with promoting PFSA and have a wonderful April. Participate when and where you can. Hope to see you at our upcoming Annual Picnic, Saturday, April 30th at Casa de Fruta, Hollister. Stop at the RV
office upon enter-ing to register your vehicle for free parking. Hope to see you there! Linda J. Mateus PFSA Supreme President
