Dear School Community
Parent Participation and Involvement Apple Fair The Apple Fair was a fantastic success with a great night had by all. The park proved to be a great location in terms of space and access to the wider community. A huge appreciation to the Apple Fair Committee for another year of great planning and organisation. The committee meets regularly throughout the year in the lead up to the event and puts in great time and effort. Thank you also to our army of volunteers made up of teachers and families for giving up your time and helping make the Apple Fair possible. Next Tuesday is our second school council meeting for 2018. The list of school councillors is published in the Grove Gazette and also appear on the school website. Our school councillors welcome correspondence in person or via the response form on the school website. Classroom Helpers’ Program Due to high demand and interest I can confirm that there will be another Classroom Helpers’ Program. Cathy Buchanan-Hagen will conduct the next program on Friday this week, 16th March between 9.00–
10.40am. DET Parentline is a confidential and anonymous phone counselling service for parents and carers of children and teenagers in Victoria. The service offers counselling, information and support around a range of parenting issues. Professional counsellors are available to discuss child behaviour and development, parent-child relationships, bullying, living with adolescents, family violence, family breakdown and parental stress. Parentline can be accessed 7 days a week from 8am to midnight every day of the year on 132289 or www.parentline.vic.gov.au
School Improvement My School Website Last week NAPLAN results were posted onto the My School website. Once again OGPS has achieved fantastic results against ‘like’ schools. I use the term ‘like’ schools because the website compares us against schools with a similar Student Family Occupation and Education (SFOE) index across Australia. Without mentioning them it was outstanding to achieve higher average Literacy and Numeracy scores than three big private schools in Geelong.

School Improvement / Continued / … NAPLAN This year the National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be conducted from Wednesday, 16th to Friday, 18th May during term two. The assessment program tests Year 3 and 5 students in reading, persuasive or narrative writing, grammar and punctuation, numeracy and spelling. Students will have the opportunity to practice all aspects of the assessment in the lead up to the testing period. Please note the dates above and keep them free as all schools in Australia must complete the tests on the same day and time.
Promoting Positive Behaviour Special Religious Instruction (SRI) Michelle and Terry, our special religious instruction (SRI) teachers are currently completing their Access Ministries accreditation. SRI will commence next term for those families wishing to participate. Classes will be conducted during lunchtimes as in recent years. Information flyers and opt in consent forms will shortly be available from the office. National Day of Action OGPS along with more than 2,300 schools has signed on to the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA) on Friday, 16th March. The NDA is Australia’s key anti-bullying event for schools. In 2018, schools are called to imagine a world free from bullying and share their big ideas within their own school community. The students will be participating in a variety of activities throughout the day to reduce the incidence of bullying, inside the school gate or online. Curriculum Day On Monday, 26th March we have our next curriculum day. On the day staff will be working with the Positive Institute from Geelong Grammar. Our focus is to further develop student and staff engagement and wellbeing through Positive Education.
Positive Transitions
Secondary School Open Days I would like to remind our families that many secondary schools are currently conducting their open days, information nights and interviews. We have a list of secondary school open days already in the Grove Gazette, we will publish further information as it is received. On behalf of the school I would like to wish all of our Year 6 students the best in gaining the secondary school of their choice in 2019. Foundation students Our 2018 Preps will be at school full time from today, Wednesday, 14th March. All our Preps have settled into our school and playgrounds so well. It’s been great to see them mixing with the other grades and their classroom friends. Well done to our Prep team for organising and running such a smooth transition program into OGPS for our Preppies. A reminder that on Thursday, 29
th March, being the end of term, we finish at 2.30 pm
Student Development House Cross Country Our Years 3 to 6 annual cross country is next Friday, 23rd March. Grades will walk down to the beach. Parents/Carers may wish to collect their children from the beach, an early departure form will need to be signed at the beach prior to departure.
Thank you for your continued support of OGPS.

Interesting Word of the Week
paseo (pah-sey-oh; Spanish pah-se-aw)
noun
1. a slow, idle, or leisurely walk or stroll
2. a public place or path designed for walking; promenade
Quote
…… the theme of every evening’s conversation at the different houses, and in our afternoon’s paseo
upon the beach, was the ship……
- - Richard Henry Dana, Two Years Before the Mast, 1840
Origin
The Spanish noun paseo “a stroll” is a derivative of the verb pasear “take a walk”, itself a derivative of
pasar “to come past, go past”. Pasar comes from an assumed Vulgar Latin verb passare “to pass, go
on, extend”, which is formed from Latin passus, the past participle of pandere “to unfold, extend,
spread out”. The Latin noun passus “a step, pace”, also derived from pandere, is the ultimate source
of pace, ie. “a step”, and the verb pass. Paseo entered English in the 19th century.
Social Media and the School Community from DET
The internet and social media provide great opportunities for us to network and stay in touch online. While these technologies can offer a positive space for sharing information and ideas, they also have the potential to cause harm to individuals, groups or even whole communities.
Just as you would discourage your child from acting inappropriately online, it’s important to remember that sometimes, negative comments posted about a school community by parents or caregivers can have a bigger impact than expected. Reputations of staff, schools and even parents can be damaged.
Whenever you’re online, you are potentially speaking to an unlimited audience, even if you think your conversations are private. Taking a few moments to think about the content you post could save upset, embarrassment - and even possible legal action or police involvement.
Parental and community feedback is important for schools. If you have a concern, complaint or enquiry about an issue at school, the best approach is to speak directly to us, rather than discussing it in a public forum. If you are worried about online content in-volving the school community, contact the principal.
If you are posting online, remember that your comments help build and support the school community. Make sure you’re honest, respectful, considerate - and a good role model for your children.

Lunchtime Running Club
Come along to Running Club! It’s held every Wednesday at lunch time. We meet on the bottom
basketball court. Running club is so much fun. We do a warm up to music first then run laps around the
park. It’s a great way to get fit, train for something and see or friends.
If your child would like to do Running Club a permission form is needed —
