PARENT, TEACHER AND STUDENT CONFERENCES If you have a child in Years 7 to 11 it is that time of year again to catch up
with your young person’s teachers (Year 12 conferences were held in the
second week of the term).
The interviews will be conducted in the LANGUAGE CENTRE, at the rear
of the school; between 4:00p.m. and 7:00 pm this Thursday. There is a place
in the school diary to write your preferred times, which then needs to be
shown to the teacher and confirmed or changed. Please ask your young
person to do this. Otherwise ring and ask to speak to the class teacher to
make an appointment time. Please try to keep to the appointment times, so
the conferences flow smoothly. We are looking forward to seeing you
there.

COURSE COUNSELLING FOR YEARS 9 AND 10
Monday, 11th August and Tuesday, 12th August (this week) were the
Course Counselling Days for Years 9 and 10 to plan their pathway for 2015.
ALL students have taken home a Pathway Planning Package to assist them in
this process. Any students who did not take part in a counselling session are
asked to see Mr Wight as soon as possible to arrange an alternative time on
either a Tuesday, Thursday or Friday.
SAYONARA TO OUR MIYAZAKI STUDENTS FOR 2014
On Friday night in the Learning Resource Centre our Miyazaki students held
a Sayonara Party to thank their host families and the school. The students
performed several songs and two dances. The students showed us how to
write our names in Japanese and demonstrated some origami. We
celebrated with the cutting of a cake, which was enjoyed by all. It has been
another wonderful experience for both our Miyazaki students and the
Newcomb students.
STAFFING NEWS
This week we welcomed back Mr Glynn who has been away from school
since March. It was great to see him back.

NEWCOMB SECONDARY COLLEGE ARTS EXPO 2014
Thursday 31st July, 2014 saw the second annual Newcomb SC Arts Expo.
Featured this year was an array of art works from a range of subjects, including Art, Visual Communications,
Media and some excellent performances from both the Blues and Jazz Band and some Year 12 solo music
performers.
Student’s from Years 7, 8, and 9 got the opportunity to see the expo during class time, and there were many
others that came during recess and lunchtime, as well as parents and ex- students. There was even a surprise
Year 8 Conga Line!
Again this year, there was a display of works from ex-students who are working in a range of fields, not just in
the arts but who continue to enjoy arts as an ongoing part of their lives.
DEAKIN UNIVERSITY—ACCESS EXPRESS 2014
PARTNERSHIP CELEBRATION
In 2014, Newcomb Secondary College continues to enjoy a close partnership with Deakin University – a
partnership which we highly value and which presents excellent opportunities for our students. We are
lucky to be one of seven schools who have this link with Deakin, and the benefits include Year 9 camp,
Year 10 Deakin day, senior school tutoring and assistance at the junior level as well.
Last week, four of our students were invited to join the celebrations of these partnerships, at a lunch and
presentation at the Deakin University Centre in
Melbourne. Each of the participating schools were
showcased and the day was led by students. We had
the chance to meet with other students and teachers
and listen to some excellent performances from some
of the other schools.
Our students spoke extremely well about their
experiences on the Year 9 camp last year. They
explained how the camp was run and what they got out
of the experience. Our students were gracious in their
thanks and appreciation of Deakin University and I was
impressed by the level of maturity, poise and
confidence in their presentation.
Well done to Nick, Guillan, Luke and Taylor, pictured
here delivering their speech.

JUST THINK SCHOOL FORUM
On Tuesday 5th August we represented Newcomb Secondary College at the Just Think Forum at
Simonds Stadium. We attended workshops with Batforce, Barwon Youth and Constable Robbie Noggler
from the Victoria Police. The workshops were about responsible use of alcohol, safe partying and looking
after your mates. At the end of the day we participated in a Trivia Competition and had our photo taken
with Geelong Cats players including James Kelly, Mitch Duncan, Jordon Murdoch, Lincoln McCarthy and
Jimmy Bartel. There were 9 schools from the Geelong area represented. It was a really fun and
interesting day.

Parents and Guardians are required to provide an explanation for their child’s absences.
This can be done by:
Telephone the College on 5248 1400
Write a note in the Student Planner or a separate note to present the next morning to the PASS
Booth. Records can then be amended.
In all instances the College requires the following information:
Child’s name
Home Group or Year level
Date absent
Reason for absence
Parent/guardian signature (when written).
PUNCTUALITY AND UNIFORM
Students are to report to the College Office for PASSOUTS for:
Late Arrival
Leave Early
Out of Uniform or Without Diary
The PASSOUTS Desk is located in the rear foyer of the Admin Building – enter through quadrangle. This
is available from 8.30am each morning. After 10.00am students will need to report
to College Reception.
Late Arrival
When a student is going to arrive late to school for any reason please let the school know by phone or write a note. Those who arrive to class after 8.45am must receive a Late Pass. If the
student has no note, they will need to go through the same procedure. Students who regularly arrive
late without an explanation will be referred to their Team Leader.
Leave Early
If it is unavoidable that a student needs to leave for an appointment, the student is required to provide a
signed note of explanation to the College office before school. The student will in turn be issued with a
Leave Pass from the PASSOUTS Desk. This is to be handed to their teacher at the arranged time of
departure. Appointments, where possible, should be made outside school hours or on Wednesday
afternoons when students are dismissed early.
Out of Uniform
If a student is out of uniform they must provide a signed note of explanation to the PASSOUTS Desk
before classes to be issued a Uniform Pass. Students who are regularly out of uniform will be referred
to Team Leaders.
Without Diary
If a student has forgotten or lost their diary they will need to report to the PASSOUTS Desk. Lost
diaries will need to be replaced.
IMPORTANCE OF REGULAR ATTENDANCE
Poor patterns of attendance place students at risk of not achieving their
educational and social potential. They are disadvantaged in the quality of choices
they are able to make well after they have left school. At Newcomb Secondary
College full attendance is required at all classes, assemblies and activities. It is
important that your child achieves a minimum attendance of 90%.

...THINK OUTSIDE THE CAN!
The Geelong Food Relief Centre has been providing free food to those in need
for 23 years. Working together with welfare agencies, last year we saw 9,078
families referred to the Centre for support.
Your school is one of the 80 or so schools in Geelong and the surrounding
region, who every year help us make this possible. Each individual donation
makes its way on to a family’s table. This could be a family in your street.
This year we are asking you to donate items we are always in need of. These items form some of the basic
food item most families choose.
We thank you, and your child’s school for your support and assure you it will really make a difference to
someone in our community.
So, yes it’s called the Toucan Appeal, but this year we want you to think outside the can!
We love to get …
