Messenger Pastor Al’s Message
“Keep the words that I am commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise.” (Deuteronomy 6:6-7)
I am just returning from the Nebraska Synod Assembly as I sit down to write this article. Besides re-electing Bishop Brian Maas to a second term, we considered a handful of other resolutions, including one which requested energy and resources to support congregations as we speak about difficult issues in a divided culture.
Another resolution recognized that the year 2020 will mark the 50th anniversary of the
ordination of women in our predecessor church bodies, and so, we were encouraged to find ways to acknowledge and celebrate the gift that this has been to the church. We also approved the proposed budget for 2019 for the ministry and mission of the Nebraska Synod.
All of this business was important, and I believe the assembly was faithful as we sought to listen and discern how we can continue to live out our faith together. For myself though, one of the most powerful moments came during one of our keynote addresses. At one point, we were asked to break into small groups of six or so people. At times, these moments can feel a little awkward as we try to quickly become acquainted and share openly. Honestly, this time was no different.
The two questions we were asked to speak about were, “What gives you joy,” and “How are spiritual practices a part of your congregation?” Some in our group were quick to answer, and I appreciated their responses. For whatever reason, it took a moment before I was able to respond, but what came to me was that there was one response that answered both questions for me: Confirmation.
I really do love the whole system or process of Confirmation; thinking about the basics of the faith and trying to make connections to our real day to day life. I shared that I particularly find joy in the pattern that we use in our confirmation system called, The Faith 5. This is what the pattern looks like:
1. SHARE highs & lows of the day
2. READ and highlight a verse of Scripture in your Bible
3. TALK about how the verse relates to your highs & lows
4. PRAY for your highs & lows, for each other, and for the world
5. BLESS one another; by making the sign of the cross on one another’s forehead and saying something like: “God loves you and so do I” or “Sleep in Jesus”.
The reason why I love our system and especially this pattern is because it begins with striving to nurture deep, vulnerable and honest relationships, and then, from this foun-dation, we make connections with the basic things in which we believe; things that shape all of our decisions every day. continued on back page

Sinai Lutheran Church welcomes, challenges, and nurtures disciples to serve the church and love God’s world.
Sinai will recognize and fellowship committee will host a
reception SUNDAY, June 10 for Pastor David Nordstrom, Pastor Juliet Hampton and Pastor Helmut Yurk for their anniversaries and retirement in rostered ministry. David will hit a milestone of 55 years, Juliet 10 years and Helmut has retired from the ministry after 41 years this year! Congratulations to all of them. Please join us in the fellowship hall for a reception after worship.
Thanks to all who made our first round of SUMMER LUNCH TOTES packing so successful! We will do it again on June 24
th
and then join together in fellowship and food again. You do not need to pack in
order to join us for brunch! A green sheet will be in June 10 and 17 bulletins for the brunch preparation for June 24
th.
30,000 high school youth and their leaders will gather in Houston for the
ELCA Youth Gathering June 27-July 1. Our Sinai youth have been
preparing for the experience since last fall. The Gathering encourages
people to think more about vocation in our lives. The Gathering has been a catalyst for many youth and adults
to experience God more fully and live life in response to our call from God, helping to discern our vocational
calling from God. (What is God asking me to do?) Please keep the following youth and leaders in your prayers:
Haley & Kristin Bogenreif, Alissa Brokenicky, Hannah Johnson, Thomas Strunk, Sarah Wulf and Pastor Al.
Sinai and Salem Lutheran churches will again host a Day
Camp with Carol Joy Holling for four days on July 9-12
for current K-6th graders. It will be for the hours 9am-3pm
with the Thursday closing witness event at 1pm in which all
guests are invited. A water day and BBQ lunch are always
part of the week with Bible study, fun and fellowship with
other peers and camp counselors.
Carol Joy’s summer and day camp theme is This Changes
Everything to mirror the theme from the ELCA Youth
Gathering based on Ephesians 2:8.
Preschoolers will have a separate session on those dates
from 9-11am and Middle School and High School students
can assist with any of the programming! Deadline to
register for the free event is June 17. Registration forms
have been given to parents and also on the entry way
table. If you need a registration form, contact the office.
We will need snack items on Tuesday, July 10 (fruit) and
Thursday, July 12 (trail mix fixin’s). A green sheet will be
available in the bulletins on July 1 and 8 or contact the
office if you are willing and able to offer any items.
Summer Music 2018: Musicians are given an opportunity to share their musical talents with the congregation right after 9:00am
worship on June 17 and August 12. To share your talent, sign up on the sheets on the North bulletin board. There is a place on the sign-up sheet for you to check if you need an accompanist (or if you would like to serve as an accompanist). Everybody join us to support these musicians after worship. Refreshments will be available!
Cantors for the Psalms throughout the summer are needed, so if you would like to
participate in worship in that way, the sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board for dates July 1-Sept 2!

Fellowship & Forums-- A sign up to provide treats for fellowship is posted on the North bulletin board. Please join us in the narthex most Sundays after worship (10:00am). It will not be held in the nar-thex on Sundays that a brunch or reception is scheduled for the fel-lowship hall. Sunday school and all forums will take a break during the summer and will resume on Rally Day, September 9.
Columbarium Team at work:
The May issue of the Messenger introduced the word columbarium to you (a niche or collection of niches used to places urns containing the cremains of the dead) and the concept of their use in a Christian church. If you missed the article or would like to see it again, please go on-line to Sinai’s website for previous issues of the Messenger (May, 2018).
This month we want you to know that your columbarium team has met several times investigating the possi-ble use of a columbarium for Sinai. There are seven people on our team, including Pr. Al, and so far we have been looking into what other churches have done in designing, building and managing one. As you can imagine, there are many different ways churches work to meet the pastoral and spiritual needs of their mem-bers and many questions that we, too, are asking about this particular practice. We know you have ques-tions, too. We hope to host Adult Forums to provide you the opportunity to ask.
Our main concern is to offer a faithful option for final resting places for those we love who have gone before us. Our immediate goal is to provide our congregation’s council with an informed proposal one way or the other in a timely manner. Our ultimate mission is to give the boldest possible witness to the hope that is ours in the resurrection of Jesus from the dead.

Social Ministry assembled & delivered May baskets for Sinai’s homebound May 1st. Thank you so much for the wonderful May basket. It was the best one I’ve ever seen— and delivered in a storm! Janis Bond
To my Sinai family, a huge thank you to Diane Vyhlidal and the Social Ministry committee for remembering me with a beautiful, thoughtful and useful May Basket. It was delivered on a dreary day and gave me a huge lift. Life takes lots of twists and turns, but my faith is strong and knowing the Sinai family is there for me means a lot. I feel like I am surrounded by God’s love. Sincerely, Laura Wray
Pastor Adam White and his family share their thanks to Sinai for being so hospitable to them on their visit last Sunday, May 20

Pastor Al’s Message continued from front page
I love it because I have seen how these spiritual practices actually work, how they connect our youth, and how they prepare a youth so that her or his faith really is a gift that helps her or him to live differently. I believe this is exactly what the verses above from Deuteronomy are all about. It’s about being vulnerable and honest in our relationships, and from that foundation, sharing, at all times, how we see our faith impact-ing our real lives. As I spoke and shared with our little group at assembly, I wound up realizing and telling them that I see this same pattern throughout our congregation. I see you, as members of Sinai, really listening to each other; hearing the highs and lows in each other’s lives. I see how you are vulnerable and make the connections between the things that are shared and your faith. I see you praying for each other, and not just that things will be fixed. I see how your sharing, connecting, talking and praying leads to you seeing your part in the celebrating of joys and the healing of pains. Again, I want to be specific, in that, the healing comes not in the pain being fixed or removed, but because of the true relationship, love and claim, a person is able to breathe easier and truly live in the midst of the struggle. I also do believe that, what we practice when we gather as a community, spreads beyond our walls as well because this pattern is becoming a part of who we are. I just wanted you to know that this is how I see spiritual practices being lived out at Sinai, and this is what gives me joy! Peace,

potluck
You may notice on the calendar that Sinai will be the host housing for 8-10 Americorps work group members.
Habitat for Humanity has received a grant to bring them to Fremont to help build houses similar to last year! They
will sleep in the Sunday school classrooms from July 13-August 30. They will have access to our kitchen and
restrooms and they will be fully aware of our schedule. We will provide a potluck meal to them two times while
they are here on Tuesdays, July 31 and August 21. As we found out last year, they have a small food budget,
so I’m sure they would welcome any surprise dinners brought to church As more details become available, we
will keep you informed!
