Contrasts: From The 1960s Back ToThe 1920s - Vol. 2Back in 2007 Guild released two collectionscovering four decades of Light Music, from the1920s to the 1950s (GLCD5134 & 5135). Thisconcept was revisited in GLCD5218 with aselection of ‘Contrasts’ where the scope waswidened to include the 1960s. During work on theproject it soon became apparent that just one CDcould not fully do justice to the idea, hence thissecond volume along similar lines. The somewhatsedate styles of earlier years were inevitablyaffected by the influences of the jazz era. Then thearrival of electrical sound recording in the mid-1920s, and the major impact of the cinema whentalking pictures arrived, meant that vast amountsof Light Music in its many different styles wasrequired. Finally by the 1960s the perfection ofhigh fidelity and stereo sound often allowedcomposers, arrangers and conductors to expressthemselves in a spectacular fashion previouslyunimaginable. All this is vividlyillustrated in the very variedcollection on this CD.GLCD 5223

New Town: Production Music Of The 1950sWhat is ‘Production Music’? In simple terms it ismusic provided by publishers for use byprofessionals mainly in the entertainmentbusiness. Most of it is especially composed for thepurpose, and some pieces may last only a fewseconds. But there are many examples of lightmusic cameos which have become popular withthe public through their familiarity as signaturetunes and in similar situations where they havebeen regularly heard. Guild GLCD5220 reviewedthe mood music scene of the 1940s as peacereturned following World War 2. By the end ofthe decade the production music scene (in thosedays more commonly called ‘mood music’ – inthe USA it was often known as ‘stock music’) waswell established in Britain, although there werestill a relatively small number of publishersinvolved. This was to change in the 1950s with thearrival of new labels and the rapid expansion ofthe existing libraries. New composers appeared, injecting fresh vitality whichreflected the growing optimismof the era. GLCD 5224
