The edition
e edition Richard Strauss Werke · Kritische Ausgabe (RSW) [Richard Strauss Works · Critical Edition] is the rst scholarly critical edition of Richard Strauss’s complete musical oeuvre. Up until now, the majority of his compositions have been available only in largely uncorrected reprints of older publi-cations. In the new edition, all compositions in major genres – the complete stage works, orchestral works, lieder and songs (with piano and orchestral accompaniment) and chamber music - are newly edited. e edition also incorporates di erent versions and fragments alongside a documentation of the sources,
the genesis of individual works, and perfor-mance variations authorised by the compos-er. e edition consists of printed musical volumes with integrated critical reports and is augmented by an online platform featuring text comparisons and annotated collections of documents. e extensive introductions and footnotes are written in German and English. Performance materials, based on the edition, are also available.
Editor and editorial method

In the score, everything is exactly how I want it! Richard Strauss
Sciences and Humanities in Munich in coop-eration with the Richard Strauss Institute in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Work on the edition will be undertaken by the Richard Strauss Edition Research Center at the Ludwig-Max-imilians-Universität in Munich and is supported by the Federal Republic of Germany’s Academy Program and by the Free State of Bavaria.
e critical new editions of these works adhere to the highest editorial standards based on a critical study of the sources. is involves the comparison of all available musical sources including newly discovered documents such as autograph scores, engravers’ copies, galley
proofs, orchestral parts, rst prints and sub-sequent editions printed during the compos-er’s lifetime. Documents relating to Strauss’s rehearsals with orchestras and individual mu-sicians including the composer’s wife, Pauline de Ahna (whose correspondence is signi cant for the lied volumes of the edition), will also be considered where relevant. e worldwide research into the relevant sources for this pro-ject is supported through extensive preliminary work which has already been undertaken at the Richard Strauss Institute within the framework of the DFG project Richard Strauss Quellen-verzeichnis [source catalogue] (www.rsqv.de). is is also the rst time that the composer’s extensive correspondence has been evaluated
with regard to compositional relevance, includ-ing letters to publishing houses, performers and other relevant individuals.
The fi rst volumes
e two volumes containing the early tone poem Macbeth (1888/1891) and the Lieder with piano accompaniment from Op. 10 to Op. 29 are scheduled for publication in April 2017. Both volumes provide an impressive illustration of Strauss’s intensive work on these compositions and of his overall artistic devel-opment. e two complete surviving versions of Macbeth – of which the earlier is being published for the rst time – are presented

MacbethRichard Strauss | 1864–1949
op. 23[3. Fassung]
synoptically to reveal the progress of the young composer who would subsequently be-come a master of orchestration. e compos-er’s struggle with this work in his transitional phase is additionally documented by the inclusion of Strauss’s own piano reduction of the composition for four hands and fragments of a lost early version of Macbeth.
e rst volumes in the series of operas – Salome and Elektra – are also in preparation. e new edition of Salome, with precise dynamic markings and performance indica-tions from the original manuscript, contains real surprises in the second volume: the score of the French language version, which Strauss
arranged based on the original text by Oscar Wilde in collaboration with author and music essayist Romain Rolland, is accessible here for the rst time, and includes major revisions to the vocal part that transform the work into a “proper French opera.” What is more, the extensive and newly rediscovered “retouches” that Strauss undertook in 1930 for perfor-mance in Dresden, which featured a lyric instead of a dramatic soprano in the title role (the version later decisively favoured by the composer), are also included in this volume.
Publisher and printing details e edition is issued by the publisher Dr. Richard Strauss Verlag in association with Boosey & Hawkes, Edition Peters Group and Schott Music with elegant musical notation, an attractive hardbound cover in light red embossed library cloth, and anti-glare paper (acid-free), as well as the highest quality typesetting, printing and binding.
Formats: 27.1 x 37.5 cm / 10.7 x 14.8 in (stage and orchestral works), 23.1 x 30.3 cm / 9.1 x 11.9 in (lieder and chamber music).
