Issue: April 2017
By Sarah HowardExecutive Director
April is here and I am really looking forward to a beautiful spring. There is nothing better than the smells of spring, the fresh grass, fresh dirt, spring flowers like daffodils, tulips and my favorite, hyacinths. I have a lot to be thankful for this April. My sweet boy Jack, turns 22 on April 1st. He just moved into his first apartment on his own in Marquette. No roommates, all alone. I still worry all of the time about my kids and now my grandkids. If you’re a mom or a dad it is hard not to worry. Jack will graduate soon from college and it is so weird. He goes to school full time and works two jobs. I can’t tell you how proud I am of him and my girls, they always surprise me with how grown up and responsible they are. There is nothing better than family. The joy is so huge in my life. It is funny how much I worry about our seniors. Sometimes I think that I hadn’t seen one of them for a day or two and then I will ask one of the employees or other seniors just to see if they remember seeing them. If nobody has seen them, we give them a call at their house or their family or friends number that they have put on their emergency card to make sure they are ok. We have had a few times that people were in trouble and we have had to call the police or an ambulance. Sometimes it is so sad, but most of the time they have had company or the flu. If you haven’t seen one of your senior neighbors in a couple of days, make sure you check on them, they may need a hand. This month at the Senior Center we have all kinds of fun stuff going on. I hope you see some-thing that you would like to try. We are starting another Matter of Balance 8 week class. This is such a great way of thinking differently when it comes to balance. Give the office a call to sign up for this helpful class. If the class is full, we can put you on the waiting list for
the August class. Our big Spring Craft Show is on Saturday, April 8th. If you are a crafter and are interested in a table give us a call, or if you are a shopper who loves to spend money on beautiful hand-made items stop down and check us out. We also are holding another AARP Safe Driv-ing class. This is a two day class that might help you save some money on your auto insurance and make you feel more comfortable as you age. We will also be celebrating some special days this month and will plan on letting everyone know what fun days are coming up on the calen-dar, so check them out. We have a huge fundraiser on Tuesday, April 25th. We are holding a Spring Fling Dinner Dance that is open to the public. This event will be catered by Jerry Zupin, the entertainment will be by Butch Baker and the Just 4 Fun Band. The VFW is donating their facility and we have a bunch of great auction items. This event is so important to the Manistee County Council on Aging. Everyone involved in putting it together is really working to make this a great time. You can get tickets at the Senior Center, or give us a call at 723-6477. Remember, you don’t have to be a senior to attend. We also have two wonderful raffles that have
started and the drawing date for both will be June 2. We were blessed to have received the donation of a beautiful quilt from the Victorian Quilter’s Guild. I don’t think I have ever seen a quilt that was made with
such love and care. Thank you for your generous gift. We also received a fishing charter from Sue-Lee Charters. This is a half day trip for five on Lake Michigan. I have never gone on a fishing charter but
that is something I have on my bucket list. So remember, if you win this fun excursion and need an extra person for the trip, give me a call. If you have any questions regarding anything, please give us a call and we will be happy to share the information. I hope you have a happy and healthy April and you are able to try something new.

St. Paddy’s day shamrocks and shenanigans at the Senior Center
Corned beef & cabbage, green bowlers and Irish bless-ings were the order of the day.
March was a month full of fun at the Senior Center. We lunched with city commissioners, we discussed the proposed new Senior Village, enjoyed the first potluck of the year, and partied like leprechauns.
This happy Irish couple, Agnes & Patrick Cusack celebrated with us. The smiley lad was ready to celebrate his 97th birthday.

St. Patrick’s Day & More! March came in like a lion but that did not stop the fun at the Senior Center. We ate paczkis, learned from the new sheriff in town, and seniors sported their finest greens (a day early) at the Senior Center.
