Solution in brief

> NetHawk Air Interface Test UE is used as an adapter for capturing air interface signaling and user data.

Simultaneously with M5 monitoring other interfaces:

> Signalling can be seen in real time correlated with other interfaces (Iub, Iu…) in M5 Protocol Monitor application.

Stand-alone – Test UE with M5 RF Probe application stores trace file to its internal memory:

> Trace file can be analysed as such with M5 and also merged with trace files from other network interfaces.

Complete E2E test solutionPS session troubleshooting utilising automatic File Merge

> Test UE is used as a stand-alone for recording PS session activations on the site meanwhile M5 Analyser is recording Iub and Iu-PS interfaces around RNC.

> Trace files are merged after the test session automatically.

The merged trace file is analysed on M5 Analyser:

• The subscriber filtering and session phases can be seen with the Call&Session Analysis application.

• Detailed protocol messages from the failed or abnormally terminated sessions can be analysed by using Protocol Monitor.

> Test UE is operating as a mobile Probe for measuring the essential RF quality parameters and KPIs on the field.

> Measurements reports (.rec format) are sent automatically to file server by using FTP:– GPS location included

> Measurement reports can be analysed with M5 or visualised in 3rd party systems:– Network designing and optimisation tools

e.g. ECE eEPOSTM

– Source data for QoS monitoring of live networks, e.g. mobile broadband subscribers

> M5 RF Probe software can be configured remotely by using SMS commands:– Start/stop tracing– Network selection– Bearer type etc.

> SMSs can be sent to single Test UE or broadcast many of them.

> Makes possible to start tracing at the same time in all M5 RF Probes on the field.

> Test UE is operating as an active mobile on network. Capability to generate: – CS calls– SMS – PS sessions including application

protocols HTTP, FTP...– Video calls utilising streaming protocols

> Easy writing test case scripts allow to define– Timers– Loops etc.

> SMS control enables to change the test script remotely

Use cases

> Real-time Air IF monitoring simultaneously with other interfaces:– Functional testing of different transactions like CS calls,

registrations, PS sessions, etc. in laboratory environment:• Monitoring of RF, RAN and Core interfaces at the same time.

– End-to-end signalling and user data packets delay and quality measurements in laboratory or in real network:

• Continuous QoS monitoring of 3G broadband services.

> Acceptance testing after BTS installation or other network element upgrades:– Network dimensioning and optimization:

• How new cell or additional sector operates with neighbour cells.

Benefits

> Air interface and other network interfaces signalling can be analysed in the same tool together:– Network side problems inaccessible for pure drive test tools.

> Enables end-to-end QoS measurements:– IP traffic delay, throughput, etc.– Subjective quality analysis for CS/PS voice and data.

> Light and cost effective solution for basic level RF monitoring:– One heavy drive test tool can be replaced with several Air Interface Test

UEs:• Covers many cells/sites at the same time• Remote usage and configurability• Full compatibility with M5 Analyser makes possible to troubleshoot Air IF data on low

level

--> Enables to reduce drive test tool investments and reduces the amount of working on the field!

M5 RF Probe

> Air Interface Test UE is delivered with a Symbian based software application:

– Stores Air IF signalling and user data when terminal is used as a stand alone test unit.

– Trace file is in .rec format and can be copied into PC for analysis with M5.

> User can do following operations:– Start and stop recording– Set network mode (GSM, UMTS, Dual)– Lock test terminal into user defined channel:

• GSM – band and channel• UMTS – UARFCN and scrambling code

– Select which information is stored into trace file:• Signaling bearers (control plane)• Data bearers (user plane)

– Note! HSDPA excluded.

> M5 sees the Air interface Test UE as any other interface adapter.

> Terminal’s measurement options are configured via Adapter Options:– Trace settings

• Signalling• User Data

– Network selection• 3G• GSM• Automatic

– RF signaling (RR, RRC, RLC, MAC) can be seen in real time in Protocol Monitor:

• Detail level, format, colour settings of decoding with Layer Settings.

> Trigger and Counter applications can be used normally.> Recorder application can store Air interface traffic into trace file

and trace can be analysed with Protocol Monitor as usual.

– Signalling can be analysed with Call & Session Analysis application as well:

• Air interface signalling can be correlated with signalling from other network interfaces.
