MESSAGES FROM MISS BENNETTLOOK HOW FAR WE HAVE COMEAs we reach the middle of 2019, it is absolutely wonderful to be able to reflect on our year so far.

In Semester One we have had so many fantastic things taking place at our school, here are just a few:

• Debating team competing against other schools and doing an outstanding job.

• Students participating in the Multicultural Public Speaking Competition.

• Our first Winter PSSA competition, and ‘WOW’, Emu Plains Public School are doing so well in this!

• Upgrading of the now astro turf space and the deck (purchasing also supported by our P&C....thank you!!) which also had handrails installed. This area has become so incredibly popular with our students.

• 3-way goal setting interviews and students setting learning goals. Many students continue to adjust their learning goals as they make achievements along the way. I have now met with groups of students from classes in Years 4-6 to discuss their goals and have been amazed at the high expectations students have of themselves.

• Camps.

• NAIDOC Cup.

• Ongoing professional learning for all of our teaching staff.

• A combined professional learning ‘twilight’ session with Emu Heights Public School and Leonay Public School at our school.

• NAPLAN online.

• Brilliant achievements of so many of our students who have represented our school in sports and students who are excelling in extra-curricular activities.

• The introduction of a new student wellbeing approach which allows every student the opportunity to work towards achieving bronze, silver and gold awards, badges and the possibility of a medallion.

• Goalball competition.

• Garden upgrade for Environment Club.

• The list could go on and on...........We have so much to celebrate.

2EMU PLAINS PUBLIC SCHOOL – Newsletter – Term 2 – Week 10 – 2019

I would like to thank the ongoing support of our parent and carer community, and our staff here at Emu Plains Public School. The children at our school are our priority and each and every day I am happy to have positive conversations with many people about the great things our students are achieving.

STUDENT PROGRESS REPORTSReports will be arriving home with students on Friday. You will be provided with information about the Semester Two 3-way goal setting interviews, very early next term. We will be using the School Interviews Online booking system which will allow you to book an appointment with your child’s teacher in the allocated times. These meetings will also revisit the goal setting template from the Semester One meeting and students will be encouraged to share evidence of their learning with you.

EDUCATION WEEKWe are very excited about Education Week and teachers and students are busy preparing for another fabulous Open Day. A flyer has been sent home, is on the Skoolbag app and is also in this newsletter, for your information. We welcome families and friends to this wonderful day where we celebrate the successes of every single student in our school.

SICKNESS AND ABSENCESI have included an information sheet in this newsletter which will help you to make some decisions about when to keep your child home from school in the event of illness. Please remember that it is important to provide the school with a written note, or you can submit one on the Skoolbag app, which explains the reason for your child’s absence from school. If your child is absent for two or more days, the school is required to follow up and we will make our best efforts to contact you and check in, however if you are able to give the school a call, that is also greatly appreciated.

Have a wonderful mid-year break.

See you all on Tuesday 23rd July.

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGECongratulations to the following students who have completed the Premier’s Reading Challenge:

The winter school holidays are a perfect time to read. Snuggling under a blanket reading a book with one of my children or lying in the sun enjoying a good book are some of my favourite past times on a cold winter’s day. Penrith City Library has a Premier’s Reading Challenge section where you can find a whole range of books on the list.

Keep reading Emu Plains!Mrs Alison Koutzas

AUTHOR READINGOn Wednesday 26th June 2019 Mrs Borgen visited our school and read Edwina the Emu by Sheena Knowles and The Bear and the Piano by David Litchfield. Almost forty K-2 children attended the reading and were spell bound by the beautiful stories and our talented reader. “I loved it when twelve chicks hatched from the emu eggs!” Lacey 1LD.

NAIDOC WEEK 2019The 2019 theme for NAIDOC Week is:

Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let’s work together for a shared future.

This theme aims to emphasise and celebrate the importance of working together equally for a united future.

In the weeks surrounding NAIDOC Week, which occurs in the holidays, our students will be investigating the theme in class discussions and activities. Early next term, students from Nepean Creative Arts and Performing High School will visit to share dance, storytelling and sporting games with all our students.

Recently a group of Stage Three students worked with Steven Trist and Shannon Williams, to create an Acknowledgment of Country relevant to our students and the local area. These students will be sharing this with the classes in our school and explaining how it was developed.

Acknowledgement of Country – by students of Emu Plains Public SchoolEmu Plains Public School would like to pay respect to the Darug people on whose land

we learn, live and play today.

We would also like to acknowledge the waterways, mountains, the wildlife and our bushlands that make Emu Plains a deadly place.

We are grateful to Elders past, present and future. We acknowledge your ongoing contribution to your culture and traditions.

The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2019 the International Year of Indigenous Languages to raise awareness of the crucial role languages play in people’s daily lives.

Some 250 distinct Indigenous language groups covered the continent at first (significant) European contact in the late eighteenth century. Most of these languages would have had several dialects, so that the total number of named varieties would have run to many hundreds. Today only around 120 of those languages are still spoken and many are at risk of being lost.

Here at Emu Plains Public School we are continuing to learn the Darug language. We have been revising simple greetings and short phrases that we can use in everyday language. You can view these words on our display board outside the library. This learning will continue on throughout Term 3 with new phrases and vocabulary.

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. Watch out for events advertised in the local papers and online for the Emu Plains area.

Last Friday on 21st June, 30 of our students attended the NAIDOC Cup at Hunter Fields. This is a day for students from over 25 schools in the local area to come together and celebrate. Supervised by Mrs McGrath and Mrs Quinn, the students enjoyed a variety of cultural activities and participated in Oz Tag competitions.

The students who participated in the Oz Tag competition were the Juniors (Year 3-4) and Seniors (Year 5-6). This year we were delighted to combine with Emu Heights and Leonay Public School to form our teams. Students enjoyed seeing some of their local friends and meeting new ones. The Oz Tag teams played two games each and showed great sportsmanship. Congratulations to all the students who participated.

A few quotes from students in the Oz Tag teams:

Tull – “I scored 4 tries and it was fun”

Jack – “I knew a boy from Leonay Public School and had fun”

Jeremiah – “We all played Oz Tag on Aboriginal land”

Fraser – “The food was really great”

Olivia – “I liked how netball and Oz Tag were not just for boys or girls”

The K-2 Joeys also had a great day with storytelling, craft, painting and dancing. A selection of craft will be displayed at Westfield Penrith in the coming weeks. Have a look out for it!

A few quotes from the Joeys:

Evielee – “I learnt that girls can’t play the digeridoo or they can’t have babies. Their belly might get twisted”Summer – “I liked eating cake and loved listening to music”

Charlotte – “Lots of fun activities to try”

Zara – “My favourite thing was face paint”
