TheAMEAGoverningBoardmetattheRenaissanceHotelinMontgomery,AlabamaonJanuary18,2012.Themeetingwascalledtoorderat6:35p.m.byAMEAPresidentSteveMcLendon.Presentatthemeeting:SteveMcLendon,SaraWomack,CarlaGallahan,GarryTaylor,PatStegall,BennyFerguson,KarenHickok,ClayMcKinney,BethDavis,JanePowell,JohnCooper,TimPhillips,DakotaBromley,andMoyaNorlund.

TheminutesoftheAugust27,2011meetingoftheAMEAGoverningBoardwerereadbyRecordingSecretary,CarlaGallahan.Theminuteswereamendedandapproved.

ThefinancialreportwaspresentedbyGarryTaylor.Thereportwasdiscussedandapprovedassubmitted.

PresidentMcLendonwelcomedtheBoardandintroducedBennyFerguson,theSouthernDivisionPresidentoftheNationalAssociationforMusicEducators(NAfME).

OldBusiness

ConferenceRegistration–Pre‐registrationwillbeseparatefromon‐siteregistrationinanefforttomaketheregistrationprocessmoreefficient.AcreditcardreaderisavailableforPaypal.Pre‐registrationpacketsforBoardmembersareavailableforpick‐upattheconclusionofthemeeting.

Advocacy–EachDivisionhasarepresentativeontheAdvocacyCommittee.Theyareworkingtodevelopaclearpictureofmusiceducationinthestate.Dr.CarlHancockisworkingwiththecommitteetodevelop,distribute,andreviewasurveyonmusiceducationissues,teachers,andAMEAservices.Thesurveywillbepilotedinthelobbyatthe2012AMEAIn‐ServiceConference.Dr.WomackpresentedtheAdvocacyDVDthathasbeencreated.TheDVDwillbeavailableattheConferenceandwillbeplayedatmultipleeventsthroughouttheConference.ItisalsoavailableonYoutubeandFacebook.

PresidentMcLendonacknowledgedProCatfortheirworkontheAdvocacyDVD.TheGoverningBoardwasencouragedtothankProCatfortheiroutstandingeffortandcontribution.

FutureAlabamaMusicEducators(FAME)–TheGoverningBoardwillbeintroducedtotheFAMEParticipantsat9:15a.m.onJanuary19,2012.TheparticipantswillattendtheKeynoteaddress,meetwithMr.BennyFerguson,andparticipateinasessionwithDr.TimLautzenheiser.

DivisionCheckingAccounts–Eachdivisionmustaddressthisissueandworktowardachieving501C3status.

AMEAAwards–TheawardswillbepresentedFridayevening,January20,2012.

FutureAMEAConferences–AMEAwillholdtheIn‐ServiceConferenceattheRenaissanceHotelandConventionCenterinMontgomery,Alabamaforthenextthreeyears.The2013Conferencewilltakeplaceoneweekearlierthantheusualdate.2013AMEAConferencedates:January10‐12,2013.

2013AMEAConference–AdiscussionoccurredontheselectionoftheKeynoteSpeaker.ThetopicwastabledandwillbediscussedindetailattheSaturday,January21,2012meetingoftheAMEAGoverningBoard.

NominationCommittee–ThecommitteeannouncedofficernominationsfortheupcomingAMEAofficerelection.ThenominationswillbeannouncedattheAMEAbusinessmeetingonThursday,January19,2012.

KarenHickokrequestedalistofallmemberswhopre‐registeredapproximatelytwoweeksbeforetheupcoming2013AMEAConference.Sheidentifiedafewissueswithpre‐registrationthatarebeingaddressed.Approximately500conferenceattendeespre‐registeredandapproximately216attendeesregisteredon‐site.

GarryTayloraskedtheBoardtoshareissues/concernsabouttheconferencethatneedtobeaddressedfornextyear.AdiscussionoccurredonthepossibleimplementationofaTreasurer/RegistrarElectpositionontheAMEAGoverningBoard.

PatStegalltalkedtoeachexhibitorduringtheconference.Adiscussionontheexhibitlayoutoccurred.

JohnCoopersuggestedreservingalargerroomfortheperformanceofpercussionensemblesinthefuture,possiblyonstage.AdiscussionoccurredonpossiblechangesintheJazzBandRhythmSectionaudition.

JanePowelladdressedconcernswithrecordingissuesfortheclarificationofprocedures.

JodyPowellsuggesteddisplayingtheAMEAlogoandotherannouncementsonascreenintheConcertHallbeforeperformances.

ArecommendationwasmadetohavethepianointheConcertHalltunedduringtheConferencesincemovingthepianoforthedifferentperformanceensemblesimpactsthetuning.

TimPhillipssuggestedmovingtheHigherEducationDivisioneventsbacktoThursdayandFridayforthe2013Conference.HealsosuggestedmovingtheRecitaltotheConcertHall.

Asuggestionwasmadetoeliminatethedivisionfromtheeventlistingintheconferenceprogram.Allmembersmayattendanyofthesessions.

AdiscussionoccurredontheAdvocacyDVD.

TheElementary/GeneralMusicDivisionrequestedtheirroombesetupdifferentlyforsomeofthesessions.ArequestwasmadetoincludelongersessionsinthefutureandMr.Taylorencouragedthedivisionpresidentstobecreativewithschedulingtoaccommodatetheneedsoftheirdivision.

NewBusiness

TheupcomingAMEAElectionswillbeheldonlinefromMarch1‐April1,2012(Cooper,Davis).Passed.

ThenextmeetingoftheAMEAGoverningBoardwillbeheldonJune19,2012at10:00a.m.attheMontgomeryRenaissanceHotel.

AmotionwasmadetobringtheAlabamaSymphonyOrchestratothe2013AMEAConference(McKinney,Bromley).Passed.

GarryTaylorthankedtheBoardfortheirservice,requestedconferencephotosbesenttohim,andremindedeveryoneoftheupcomingAlaBrevepublishingdeadline.

PresidentMcLendonadjournedthemeetingat2:52p.m.(Phillips,Norlund).
