2018SmallCompanyInternshipAwardProgram(SCIA)GuidelinesThe Michigan Corporate Relations Network (MCRN) is a statewide university network designed to createpartnerships that will connect state industry to critical university talent in ways that will help the Michiganeconomy grow and prosper. Six public universities in Michigan make up the network. They are Michigan StateUniversity, Michigan Technological University, Wayne State University, Western Michigan University, and theUniversity of Michigan in Ann Arbor and Dearborn. There are also 9 public universities that are affiliates of theMCRN. These universities include Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, Ferris State University,Grand Valley State University, Lake Superior State University, Northern Michigan University, Oakland University,Saginaw Valley State University & the University of Michigan-Flint.
One component of the MCRN is the Small Company Internship Award Program (SCIA). This program provides toeach school that meets the requirements outlined below, funding for 2018 to help Michigan small businesses hirestudents to work as interns on projects which are STEM-related and that are both beneficial to the company andacademically relevant to the student.
ELIGIBILITY,AWARD,ANDREPORTINGGUIDELINES• Participationintheprogramisbasedonafirst-come,first-serveeligibilitybasis.• Thecompanyisastart-uporasmall-sizedMichiganbusiness,upto250employeeswithbusiness
operationslocatedinMichigan.Prioritizedpreferencewillbegivento:• AcompanythatisfocusedoninnovativeworkintheScience,Technology,Engineering,andMath
(STEM)fieldsandprovidesaSTEMinternship• IfnotaSTEMfocusedcompany,shouldprovideaSTEMfocusedinternship
• Acompanymayparticipatewithupto2ofthenetworkschoolsandemployupto2internsusingfundsfromtheSCIAprogram(pleasenotethatifthereare2internsfrom1school,theywouldsplit1award).
• PreferencewillbegiventocompanieswhohavenotyetreceivedaSCIAaward,orcompaniesthathaveparticipatedinSCIApreviouslyandhavehiredtheirSCIAinternonapart-timeorfull-timebasis.
• EachschoolwillmanageitsownapplicationandselectionprocesstoselectcompaniestoparticipatebeginninginJanuary2018.SchoolsshouldallocatetheirfundstocompaniesbyApril27,2018.Ifthereisextrafundingavailableafterthatdate,allocationofmoniestocompaniesonwaitlistsshouldtakeplacebyMay30,2018.AllcompanyawardsshouldbefinalizedandallinternsmustbehiredbyMay30,2018.
• Thecompanywillconductinterviews,maketheinternshipoffer,assignasupervisor,provideorientation,training,andperformanceexpectationsandfeedbackfortheintern.Consultationandguidancewillbeavailablefromtheschoolfordevelopmentoftheinternshipjobdescriptionandpromotingtheinternshiptoqualifiedstudents.
• Thecompanyagreestoasitevisit/phonecallbeforeand/orduringtheinternshipperiodbyaMCRNschoolrepresentative.
• Themaximumawardforacompanyisupto$3,500.• Theintern’scompensationwillbefunded50%fromtheSCIAprogram(butnotmorethanthematching
award)and50%fromtheemployersothat,forexample,totalstudentearningsofatleast$7,000wouldneedtobereportedforthecompanytobeeligibleforamatching$3,500award.
• Anhourlyrateofpayofaminimumof$12 isrecommended,commensuratewithacademicmajor,internshipexpectations,andstudent’squalifications.
• Uponcompletionofinternship,companyagreestosubmitareportoutliningthebenefits,outcomes,anddeliverablesgainedasaresultofinternship,aswellasthedestinationofthestudentuponcompletionoftheinternship.ThisinformationwillbeincludedinthefinalreporttotheMichiganEconomicDevelopmentCorporation(MEDC).
