WhatistheNPI?TheNationalPollutantInventory(NPI)isaninventoryofemissionsofspecifiedpollutantsthatgivesinformationonthetypesandamountsofpollutantsbeingemittedtotheAustralianenvironment.TheNPIcontainsemissiondataon90substances.ThesubstancesincludedintheNPIhavebeenidentifiedasimportantbecauseoftheirpossiblehealthandenvironmentaleffects.IndustrialfacilitiesestimatetheirownemissionsannuallyandreporttotheirrespectiveStateorTerritoryenvironmentalauthority.Non-industry(ordiffuse)sourcesareestimatedbystateandterritorygovernments.Industry,governmentsandthecommunityhaveaccesstotheinformationreportedtotheNPI.ThelegalbasisoftheNPIisaNationalEnvironmentProtectionFebruary,1998.Seewww.npi.gov.auforadditionalinformation.
