from Graham's Magazine for May.LINES WRITTEN IN A BEAUTIFUL

MOONLIGHT.BY GEO. D. PRENTICE.

Sweet moon, I love thee, yet I grieveTo gaze on thy pale orb to night; It tells me of that last dear eveI passeed with her, my soul's delight.

Hill, vyle and wood and stream were dyedIn the pale glory of thy beams,

As forth we wandered, side by side,'Once more to tell love's burning dreams.

My fond prm was her living zone,Mr hand within her band was pressed,

And love was in each earnest tone,And rapture in each heaving breast.

And many a high and fervent vowWas breathed from her lull heart and mine,

While thy calm light was on her browLike puie religion's seal and sign.

We knew alas ! that we must part,We knew we must be severed long,

Yet joy was in each throbbing heart,For love v as deep, and faith was strong.

A thousand memories of t he pastWere busy in each glowing breast,

And hope upon the future castHer rainbow hues and we were blest.

I craved a boon oh! in that boonThere was awild, delirious bliss

Ah, didst thoo ever gaze, sweet moon,Upon a more impassioned kiss?

The parting came one moment briefHer dim and fading form I viewed

'Twasgonr and there I stood in griefAmid life's awful solitude.

Tell me, sweet moon, for thou canst tell,If passion still unchanged is hers

Do thoughts of me her heart still swellAmong her many worshippers?

Say, does she sometimes wander nowAt eve beneath thy gentle flame,

To raise to heaven her angel browAnd breathe her absent lover's name?

Oh when her gentle lids are wet,I pray thee, mark each falling gem,

And tell me if my image yetIs pictured tremblingly in them!

Ay, tell me, does her bosom thrillAs wildly as of yore for me

Docs her young heart adore me still.Or is that young heart changed like thee ?

Oh let thy learns, that softest shine,If still my love to her is dear,

Bear to her gantle heart from mineA sigh, a blessing, and a tear.

WIFE IN COMPANY.The married man who carries his atten-

tion to his wife to the point of caressingher before the world, is, it will be allowed, utterly intolerable ; and we only wonderthat every man who witnesses such follyis not sick, and that every woman doesnot faint on the spot. Reader, when youwitness such an exhibition as this to whichwe allude, you doubtless believe, in thesimplicity of your nature, that it arisesfrom excess of love. If your powers ofcredence extend so far as this, pray dis-abuse your mind with all possible celerity.

What such a man desires is, to bethought the very pattern of conjugal atten-tion, as a model for husbands to copyas a man who idolizes his wife whothinksbut her, as in fact, a very miracle. If he

There are in fact, men in theworld, who, when in public, actually striiletheir wives with kindness. They cannotsit near them without throwing their armsaround their waists without pressingthem tenderly. Some even go so (aras to kiss them on the neck, on the arms, and on the cheek sometimes even on thelips, and then it is done with such anappearance of rapture, of ccstacy, as if itwere the first time. trict, to draft resolutions for the action ofthe Convention.

The Committee having retired to per-form their duty. Dr. Formyduval movedthat F. George, Esq., be requested to ad-

dress the meeting, who responded in strongterms that Convention was by far the mostappropriate and proper plan of determiningupon our candidates then, that, as theNVUmington and Manchester Road was ofgreat importance both to Columbus countyand the State, our representatives shoulduse all their exertion in getting the Stateto make appropriations to the Road, andthen concluded by scanning over the partyissues, and showing that the idea of a Na-tional Bank had long since become obso-lete, and was now numbered among therubbish of our memory; anil that the Pro-tective Tariff, should "the ship of State ridesafely through the present storm, would beswept away and remembered as a mistakenand unjust policy, which come near de-

stroying the Union.Mr John Meares was then called upon,who spoke in opposition to Conventions;

concurred with F. George, Esq., in hisviews as regards the Tariff; and conclu-ded that he was opposed to the State'staking stock in the Wilmington and Man-chester Road.

The Committee then returned and re-ported through their Chairman, M. Powell,Esq the following preamble-a-

mi resolu-tions, which were adopted:

Messrs Sands: I have been afflicted with a severe painin my side, occasioned by a diseased liver, for the last 20years, suffering at times what language canpot convey:but since taking your Sarsaparilla I have been greatly re-lieved, so much so that I have been able to attend to mybusiness, and preach occasionally, for the last 18' months.I wholly discarded all other medicine, and thoroughlytried the Sarsaparilla, which I can recommend in truthaud sincerity to all those who are in any way afflicted withany species of scrofulous complaints. There have beensome remarkable cures effected by its use in this vicinity.Mrs I. Shaw, by the use of six bottles, was restored to bet-ter health than she had before enjoyed for ten years- - andMr W.
