Rembrandt van Rijn
Aristotle with a Bust of HomerRembrandt van Rijn, Aristotle with a Bust of Homer, Baroque, 1653, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York,USA.
This imaginary portrait, one of Rembrandt's best-known works, was painted for Don Antonio Ruffo, a wealthySicilian nobleman and Rembrandt's only foreign patron, who had asked Rembrandt for a portrait of aphilosopher. The artist sent the painting to Messina (Sicily) in 1654. He was paid 500 Dutch florine (gulden) forit.297.00 USD
Bathsheba at Her BathRembrandt van Rijn, Bathsheba at Her Bath, Baroque, 1654, Muse du Louvre, Paris, France.
In the Old Testament, Bathsheba is the wife of Uriah the Hittite and later of King David. She is the mother ofKing Solomon.
2 Samuel 11:1 to 12:25 tells the story of David's adultery with Bathsheba, and his subsequent murder of Uriah inorder to conceal his guilt. His plan comes unstuck when God sends the prophet Nathan to denounce David bymeans of a parable. David is completely taken in, declaring at the end of it, "The man who did this deserves todie!" only to be told by Nathan, "You are that man".
Although both David and Bathsheba are spared death for this crime, their first child dies after only 7 days.Furthermore, the Bible claims that the subsequent string of intrigues, murders and infighting including civil warthat plagues David's later life is part of a curse imposed as additional punishment.
Rembrandt's painting shows Bathseba as she receives the message of King David summoning her.297.00 USD

Belshazzar's FeastRembrandt van Rijn, Belshazzar's Feast, Baroque, 1635, National Gallery, London, England.
The scene illustrates chapter 5 of the Old Testament Book of Daniel. Belshazzar, King of Babylon, gave a greatfeast at which wine was drunk in the golden and silver vessels looted by his father Nebuchadnezzar, from thetemple in Jerusalem, and 'gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone...which see not, norhear, nor know' were praised while God himself was not glorified. And there 'came forth fingers of a man's handand wrote...upon the plaster of the wall'.
Only the Jewish seer Daniel was able to read the supernatural inscription MENE TEKEL UPHARSIN whichforetold the defeat - in fact, the death - of Belshazzar that same night and the partition of his kingdom among theMedes and the Persians.467.00 USD
DanaeRembrandt van Rijn, Danae, Baroque, 1636, The Hermitage, St. Petersburg, Russia.
Danae, the daughter of king Acrisius, who had been foretold peril from the hand of his grandson, was placed ina tower, under the care of her old nurse. Zeus (Jupiter) anamoured of Danae penetrated to her in the shape of agolden shower of rain.
Rembrandt executed this painting in 1636, but later he revised it twice as shown by the X-ray investigations. Inspite of these revisions the painting remained a homogeneous composition.417.00 USD

Jan SixRembrandt van Rijn, Jan Six, Baroque, 1654, Six Collection, Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Jan Six, the subject of this remarkable portrait which is among the greatest painted by Rembrandt, was a friendand patron of the artist. Six (1618-1700) came from a noble Huguenot family which had fled to Amsterdam fromSaint Omer in France at the end of the sixteenth century and amassed a fortune in the textile trade and from silkdyeing.
This portrait, which is still owned by a direct descendant of the sitter, also Jan Six, captures the moment as Sixpauses while putting on his gloves just before leaving the house.297.00 USD
Jeremiah Lamenting the Destruction of JerusalemRembrandt van Rijn, Jeremiah Lamenting the Destruction of Jerusalem, Baroque, 1630, Rijksmuseum,Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
This well-preserved painting is one of the finest works of Rembrandt's Leiden period. For many years it wasincorrectly identified but it certainly shows Jeremiah, who had prophesied the destruction of Jerusalem, capitalof Judah, by Nebuchadnezzar, lamenting over the destruction of the city.297.00 USD
Joseph Accused by Potiphar's WifeRembrandt van Rijn, Joseph Accused by Potiphar's Wife, Baroque, 1655, National Gallery of Art, Washington,USA.
The painting illustrates the Old Testament story told in Genesis. Note how Rembrandt, following the principles ofBaroque painting, has used light to emphasize the salient features as if on a stage at the climax of a drama.
Potiphar's wife, the central figure in the tragedy, seems to speak eloquently and nervously as she gesturestowards Joseph's scarlet cloak at the foot of the bed. Joseph, standing in the shadow at the left, denies theaccusation, while Potiphar, his hand resting uneasily on the shoulder of the aging beauty, clearly shops hisindecision and conflict of emotion.447.00 USD

Portrait of Hendrickje StofellsRembrandt van Rijn, Portrait of Hendrickje Stofells, Baroque, 1659, National Gallery, London, England.
Rembrandt did share his later years with Hendrickje Stoffels (1615-63) who had become his live-in companionand she was even more featured as his subject than Saskia had been. The full-bodied nude of the 1654Bathsheba has traditionally been identified with Hendrickje and accords well with her numerous portraits andstudies (e.g., Woman Bathing, 1655). In 1654, shortly before she bore a daughter, Cornelia, Hendrickje wasofficially censured by the church council for living in sin.297.00 USD

The Night WatchRembrandt van Rijn, The Night Watch, Baroque, 1642, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Rembrandt painted The Militia Company of Captain Frans Banning Cocq between 1640 and 1642. This picturewas called the Patrouille de Nuit by the French and the Night Watch by Sir Joshua Reynolds because, upon itsdiscovery, the picture was so dimmed and defaced by time that it was almost indistinguishable and it lookedquite like a night scene. After it was cleaned, it was discovered to represent broad day - a party of musketeersstepping from a gloomy courtyard into the blinding sunlight.
This painting now hangs in the largest hall of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. It is a large painting that takes upthe entire back wall - despite having had bits cut off - and is arguably one of the most impressive paintingsdisplayed there.467.00 USD

The Absinthe Drinker (Degas)Edgar Degas, The Absinthe Drinker, Impressionism, 1875-76, Muse d'Orsay, Paris, France.
This painting could be considered as an example of Degas's portraiture. The models for this caf couple wereDegas two friends, actress Ellen Andre, and copper engraver Marcellin Desboutin. The scene takes place inthe Caf de la Nouvelle-Athnes.
The painting shows Degas's manner of placing the figures off-centre with a large intervening area of space inthe foreground. An original composition results from the mode of arrangement and the dark but harmonioustones of colours and shadow. Eduoard Manet (inspired by this work) would paint the same couple in his painting"Au Caf", also titled "Bock Drinkers".190.00 USD

Le Dejeuner sur l'HerbeEdouard Manet, Le Dejeuner sur l'Herbe, Impressionism, 1863, Louvre, Paris, France.
Le Djeuner sur L'Herbe ("Lunch on the Grass") was painted in 1863 by Edouard Manet and can be seen at theMusee d'Orsay in Paris. It's painted in oil, on canvas, and measures 81cm x 101cm. A smaller version can beseen in the Courtauld Institute Gallery in London.
This painting was first shown to the public at the Salon des Refuses in 1863 and its exhibition caused a furore. What upset the critics the most was Manet's audacity in "copying" the old masters, by parading vulgar modernfigures. These were not nymphs and shepherds of myth, but modern Parisian city dwellers indulging theirpetit-bourgeois passion for picnicking in the country. The fuss helped establish Manet's public profile andpromoted him to the status of hero in the eyes of younger painters.
In the foreground, three characters are seated on the grass: a naked woman and two men dressed like dandies. The woman, whose body is starkly lit, looks frankly in the direction of the viewer. The man on the right wears aflat hat with a tassel. The men seem to be engaged in conversation, ignoring the woman. In front of them, theclothes of the woman, a basket of fruit and a round loaf of bread are displayed as in a still life. In thebackground, another woman is draped in an almost transparent cloth, bathing in a small pond. Too large incomparison with the figures in the foreground, she seems to float.
The roughly painted backround lacks depth, giving the viewer the impression that the scene does not take placeoutdoors, but in a studio. The impression is reinforced by the use of broad "photographic" light, which castsalmost no shadows: in fact, the lighting of the scene is inconsistent and unnatural. The hat the man wears wasnormally only for indoor use.
Manet's wife, Suzanne Leenhoff, and his favorite model, Victorine Meurent, both modelled for the nude woman, which has Meurent's face but the plumper Leenhoff's body. The man on the left is probably Manet'sbrother-in-law Rodolphe Leenhoff.
The style of the painting breaks with the academic traditions of the time. Manet used a harsh, "photographic"light that eliminates the mid-tones. He did not try to hide the brush strokes: indeed, the painting looks unfinishedin some parts of the scenery. The nude is a far cry from the smooth, flawless ones of Cabanel or Ingres. Despitethe mundane subject, Manet deliberately chose a large canvas size, normally reserved for grander subjects.
There is an element of the painting that most people overlook: in the lower left-hand corner is a small greenfrog, or grenouille. Other than the fact that one might expect to see a frog in a riverside setting, the frog in thepainting may represent a prostitute. In 1863 grenouille was student slang for a particular type of prostitute.290.00 USD

Bal au moulin de la GalettePierre-Auguste Renoir, Bal au moulin de la Galette, Impressionism, 1876, Muse d'Orsay, Paris, France.
Renoir painted this composition in the summer of 1876. The artist attains to reproduce to perfection theatmosphere of a popular dance hall. "Moulin de la galette" is a canvas so rich in attractions, so full of enchantingdetails that it becomes nothing less than an affirmation of the goodness of living.
His picture of the Sunday afternoon dance in its acacia-shaded courtyard is one of his happiest compositions. Instill-rural Montmartre, the Moulin, called 'de la Galette' (from the pancake which was its speciality), had a localclientele, especially of working girls and their young men together with a sprinkling of artists who, as Renoir did, enjoyed the spectacle and also found unprofessional models.
On May 17, 1990, it was sold for US$78 million at Sotheby's in New York City, New York to Ryoei Saito, thehonorary chairman of Daishowa Paper Manufacturing Company, Japan.240.00 USD

Pierre Auguste Renoir concluded his exploration of the bourgeois leisure theme with this excellent painting. Thesetting is a terrace of the Restaurant Fournaise. The landscape behind the figures (who were not sisters, asindicated by the work's original title, but unrelated models), painted with expressive brush strokes, representsthe suburban town of Chatou, near Paris.
On the Terrace (Two Sisters) is a technical and compositional showdown, an amazing display of vibrant colourand flickering brushwork.220.00 USD

IrisesVincent van Gogh, Irises, Impressionism, 1889, Private collection.
Irises is one of the first paintings van Gogh did while he was at the asylum at Saint Paul-de-Mausole inSaint-Rmy-de-Provence, France in the last year before his death in 1890.
It was painted before his first attack there; this is evident in the lack of high tension which is seen in his laterworks. He called the painting "the lightning conductor for my illness" because he felt that he could keep himselffrom going insane by continuing to paint.
Van Gogh considered this painting a study, which is probably why there are no known drawings for it, althoughTheo, Van Gogh's brother, thought better of it and quickly submitted it to the Salon des Indpendants inSeptember 1889. He wrote to Vincent of the exhibition: "[It] strikes the eye from afar. The Irises are a beautifulstudy full of air and life."
In 1987, it became the most expensive painting ever sold, though this record has since been surpassed. It wassold for AUS$ 54,000,000 to Alan Bond.185.00 USD

Portrait of Dr. GachetVincent van Gogh, Portrait of Dr. Gachet, Impressionism, 1890, The whereabouts of this first version arecurrently unknown.
Portrait of Dr. Gachet is one of Vincent van Gogh's most famous paintings. He painted two versions in June 1890 during the last months of his life.
The portraits were painted in Auvers-sur-Oise close to Paris, and depict Doctor Gachet with a foxglove plant. Gachet took care of van Gogh during his last months. Gachet was also a hobby painter and became good friends with van Gogh and indeed he requested that van Gogh paint a second version of the portrait. The foxglove in the painting is a plant from which digitalis is extracted for the treatment of certain heart complaints; the foxglove is thereby an attribute of Gachet.
The painting became famous on May 15, 1990, when Japanese businessman Ryoei Saito paid $82.5 million forit at auction in Christie's, New York. This made it the most expensive painting at the time.185.00 USD
