Mutations and Autosomal DominantDisorders
Genetic Mistakes

Mutations
Mutation – a change in the DNA message
Mutations cause the wrong protein to be made (they may no longer be functional)

3 Types of Mutations
Deletion – section of DNA removed
Insertion – section added
Substitution – bases switched

Causes of Mutations
Errors in replication or transcription
Powerful radiation: x-rays, UV light, etc.

Genetic Diseases
Can be caused by mutations or by additional/fewer chromosomes
CCMs are an autosomal dominant genetic disorder.

Autosomal Dominant Disorders
The mutated gene is dominant and presents in one parent.
The children have a 50% chance of being affected.
