ST PETER’S, CAMBRIDGE PRESENTS
WelcomeThis year the focus of the Musical Theatre Academy has been learning through performance practice. The students have been challenged to present song, dance and scene assignments throughout the year at in-house “performance cafes”, from which this evening’s performances have been selected.
A key theme of the year’s learning has been the importance of “showing your work”. It is essential that the students learn to share their works in progress in order to seek feedback and improve. The temptation is strong to hide away our efforts and practice in private until we can present a “perfect” product beyond criticism or critique - an unattainable goal, the cost of which is limited improvement and a wasted opportunity to share our improvement with our peers.
Instead, across the year the MTA students have presented well over 50 songs, duos, trios, ensembles and scenes as well as several works of choreography to the group. The programme that you will see this evening represents highlights from performance units focusing on “Pre-1965 Lyrical Song”, “Comedy Duos/Trios”, “Lloyd Webber, Schoenberg and Wildhorn Ballads” and “Scene Into Song”, as well as choreographic works from different decades and a special unit on the work of Bob Fosse.
The students have worked extremely hard to learn how to shift from style to style, courageously sharing their work and their passion for musical theatre as an art form. I could not be more proud of their efforts leading up to this day.
