Best way to tell stories
Rule No. 1: Define the story: What are we trying to portray
Two-step process
Decide the story “Frame.” Decide what media to use.
Framing the Approach
Most stories don’t tell themselves.
We need a roadmapWhere are we headed? What is our theme? Who is our protagonist?
Framing Stories
Framing involves finding a way to tell a particular story – deciding the best approach in terms of reporting the story.
Developing “the Frame”
Read other publications. Talk to people Good stories come from developing
a “frame of mind” about a topic. Must have
a) Experienceb) Knowledgec) Test your idead) Reformulate your hypothesis.
Every story has a frame
Historical (Time) – Now vs. Past. Scope – Big picture vs. small picture. Reasons – Why is this happening? Impacts – Consequences of
development. Future – Down the road.
Once we have the frame …
We can decide what sort of media to use to tell the story …
Picking Multimedia elements
Building blocksPeople ? Places ? Events? Is it visual ? Is there movement? Is it complicated? Does it require explanation?
Using multiple approachesAnatomy of a plane crash Video Interviews with passengers Graphics or slides - what happened
in the moments before the plane crashed.
Cockpit recorder tape – voiceover. Story – Text discussing tighter
regulations being proposed in Congress to prevent future crashes.
