Safety Moment – Nema VE 2-2006• Do not use a cable tray as a walkway, ladder, or
support for people; cable tray is a mechanical support system for cables and raceways. Using cable tray as walkways can cause personal injury and also damage cable tray and installed cables.

Dealing with vibration: Standard Solution
The threaded rod is allowed to move inside the nut.
When exposed to vibrations the screw will move according to this arrow
Dealing with vibration: Self lock flange nuts
No room for movement
Distribution of stress:
Standard solution
The pink lines indicates the contact points between the treaded rod and the nut. When the bolt is fixed the stress will be situated in this contact area. The contact (steel against steel) is first made in area 1. The force on area 1 is therefore much larger than the force in area 2 and decreasing the further down the rod you get. The picture to the far right shows how the stress is distributed.

Distribution of stress: Self lock solution
When you fix a nut the stress will be highest on the top thread on the rod like I showed on the standard solution. However, in the case of the self lock the area where the nut meets the thread is very limited. Because the edge on the thread is weak it will bend off a little when using the required torque. Because of this the stress is allowed to “move” downwards resulting in the stress being equally distributed.
The edge on the thread will bend a little when required
torque is used to fix
Friction in the flange nut: Self lock solution
The design of the flange nut adds to the friction. A simple exercise to illustrate this is to take a flange nut and test it on paper.
First: Try to twist around the nut with this side downwards against the paper.
Then try to do the same with this side
facing down.
The exercise makes it quite obvious that the friction is very different on the side that is supposed to face the steel. This makes it very much harder to release a self lock nut compared to the standard solution, even when using washers.

142Multi-discipline support system
Oglaend System have commissioned Aveva to produce our Cable Tray, Ladder and Supports catalogue within their PDMS format. This has been done to ensure that our equipment codes are produced in a way that is fully compatible with PDMS and that Aveva will fully support the software with their existing client base.
The Tray and Ladder Catalogue item can be downloaded in a simple file format and loaded directly into the PDMS catalogue database.
