Pentecost Sunday
What is Pentecost! For Christians, Pentecost is a holiday on which we commemorate the coming of the Holy Spirit on the early followers of Jesus. Before the events of the first Pentecost, which came a few weeks after Jesus’
death and resurrection, there were followers of Jesus, but no movement that could be meaningfully called “the church.” Thus, from an historical point of view, Pentecost is the day on which the church was started. This is also true from a spiritual perspective, since the Spirit brings the church into existence and enlivens it. Thus Pentecost is the church’s birthday. -Rev. Dr. Mark D. Robert
What does Pentecost Mean? Pentecost Sunday comes fifty days after Easter Sunday, hence its name. The Greek word for fiftieth is pentekoste. This event is recorded in the New Testament book known as The Acts of the Apostles, written by the Evan-gelist Luke. Chapter 2 begins, ”The disciples of Jesus were gathering to-gether the day of Pentecost when suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them." – Acts 2:2-4 “The Church was made manifest to the world on the day of Pentecost by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The gift of the Spirit ushers in a new era in the dispensation of the mystery – the age of the Church, during which Christ manifests, makes present and communicates his work of salvation through the liturgy of his Church “until he comes””(CCC,1076)
The Paschal Candle: At the end of the Easter season,
the Paschal Candle should be kept in the Baptistry. It is lit dur-ing Baptism liturgies and from it the candles of the newly baptised are lighted. At funerals the Paschal Candle is placed near the coffin, to signify that Christian death is a true Pass-
over. -Liturgical Calendar for Ireland 2015
Prayer for Pentecost
Father in heaven, fifty days have celebrated
the fullness of the mystery of your revealed love. See your people gathered in prayer,
open to receive the Spirit's flame. May it come to rest in our hearts
and disperse the divisions of word and tongue. With one voice and one song
may we praise your name in joy and thanksgiving. Grant this through Christ our Lord.
Amen
Prayer for Preparation to Study
Lord, I know you are with me and love me. Give me peace of mind
as I prepare for this time of study. Help me to focus on my books and notes, keep me from
all distractions so that I will make the best use of this time that is
available to me. Give me insight that I might un-
derstand what I am studying , and help me to remember it when the
time comes. Above all, I thank you for the ability to be able to study and for the many gifts and talents you have given me. Help me always to use them in such a way that they honour you and do
justice to myself.
Amen
